Review for "Scouts"

Josh Roseman has posted a review of Scouts over at the Escape Pod blog.

"…I definitely enjoyed the story, and those of you who've read my reviews before know I love good characterization and world-building, which Scouts certainly has. And, while the author is definitely good at writing sex…I don't see this book as the kind of literature you would take to bed as a sexual or masturbatory aid. Unlike what I personally call "traditional" erotica, Scouts is a sci-fi novel for adults which includes explicit sex scenes, and said scenes absolutely take full advantage of the genre itself. …"

This reviewer has understood my purpose in writing Scouts, and for that reason alone it's worth a read.

Balticon Schedule

Here is my Balticon Schedule.  I won't be posting hour-to-hour updates here; instead I'll be posting them over on my Tumblr.

Friday 11:00 PM Chesapeake – Exquisite Corpse – Late Night Style

Come join us as we take this surrealist writing game from nearly a hundred years ago, and turn it into an opportunity for base smut!

Friday 12:00 PM Chesapeake – Informal Fan Tweetup

After Exquisite Corpse, hang around for the fan meetup, where I'll hand out buttons and other promo stuff.  And maybe a surprise.  Be punctual!  We won't be staying more than a few minutes.

Saturday 11:00 AM Maryland Foyer – Autograph Session

Come get your copy of Pirates!

Saturday 5:00 PM Derby  – No One is Going to Pay for Your Podcast

If you planned to make it big by selling podcast subscriptions, you might want to have a plan B, because no one is going to pay for your podcast. However, all hope is not lost!  We will explore some alternative revenue streams that don't involve getting a second day job to pay for your podcasting habit.

Saturday 9:00 PM Derby – Editing and Publishing Erotica Anthologies

From the terrors of the slushpile to the glories of release day, let's pull the curtain aside on this secretive cabal, and learn their hidden rituals, mystic rites, and whispered tales of horror.

Saturday 10:00 PM Derby – Erotica A La Carte: Iron Chef

Three authors.  One ingredient.  Thirty minutes to write five hundred words, and YOU get to watch the thrilling action. Well, not THE action, that's just in the story. But you get to watch the stories UNFOLD AS THEY ARE WRITTEN! Who will win the title?

Saturday 11:00 PM Derby – Late Night Reading: Science Fiction and Fantasy

Let's look to the future, with an eye for the erotic.

Sunday 6:00 PM Derby  – Tech for Writers

Does anyone else find it peculiar that Science Fiction authors tend to be technophobic? Well, not all authors tend to feel that way. With gadgets, software, and hardware at their disposal, authors are embracing technology that is not only surpassing what the legends were writing about, but helping them be better writers. Find out what tech toys are appealing to writers out there.

Sunday 9:00 PM Chase – Nobilis Reed — Reading

Your first chance to hear me read from Pirates.

Sunday 11:00 PM Derby – Erotica Reading: Coming Together charity anthology

Readings from the "Coming Together" series of charity anthologies.  Doing good by being bad.

Read the first chapter of "Pirates"

We're on our way to the release of "Pirates" at Balticon this year.  One of the steps is putting up the page on the publisher website, and that step has been taken.  You can't buy it there yet (that waits for the release day) but you CAN read the first chapter:

Go and read.

Page 99

Megan Mulry was talking about "Page 99″ on Twitter, and I thought you might be interested in seeing page 99 of "Pirates".  After the jump…

…were doomed.

Star put the cap back on the bottle and popped his memory chip out of the console.

He turned, saw the look on my face, and made a sad smile. "I really am sorry. I tried the best I know."

"I know. It's not your fault. I guess we're just not meant for each other."

"It is…kind of. I think." He sat on the bed and ran his hands through his hair. "I need to tell you something. You deserve to know." His eyes were full of pain and I was afraid he would start crying again. "But I can't do it now. Tomorrow, okay?"

I sat down next to him and took his hand. "Okay."

It wasn't until we got to the communications cluster the next day that we could talk about what had happened the night before. The privacy chambers had no privacy; our workplace, however, was clear. The irony wasn't lost on either of us.

After we got the morning diagnostics and utilities started, and had the encryption utility loaded up, I called Star over to my desk. I put a training holo on, in case anyone came in, and took his hand. "There was something more you wanted to tell me, last night."

"I don't…feel anything…when I touch you. I'm not like other guys. The only way I could finish was by thinking of…" He swallowed and stared down at his feet. "Thinking of someone else. A man."

"Well then, I guess we're even," I said. "I have the same problem."

"But…it's okay for you to be attracted to men." The pain and shame in his voice was gone, replaced by confusion.

"No, no…ugh. I mean, I‟m attracted to women. I saw Valka Parl naked, just for a moment, when she was changing out of an airsuit after emergency training, and I think of that sometimes." I squeezed his hand and looked around the room. "My mom says I might not get pregnant the first time. We might have to try again."

He grunted.

"Maybe if we agree that it‟s okay to think about whatever we need to think about to get through it, just for the two of us, it might be a little better?"

"Yeah. That would make it better."

I looked over at the console, realizing I had missed something important. "Where did you get that Merchant holo, anyways?"

Back cover text for "Pirates"

The countdown is beginning for the release of the second novel in the Orgone Chronicles.  Today's task: Back cover text, and blurbs.

Here's what I've come up with so far:

Challers and Valka are safe, protected aboard the Pirate city-ship known as "Port." The scars of their ordeal among the Scouts remain, however. Valka is stuck with a hyper-fertile Ovor body, and the only way for them to raise enough money to change her back, is for them to join the Worthies—reality-TV celebrities who are always on camera. In an environment where loyalty is dismissed and betrayal is rewarded, their love suffers its greatest test yet. Meanwhile, on Stakroya Station, their classmate Renedy wrestles with a budding sexuality that does not fit the station's rigid mold. An intimate night with the man who has been chosen for her does not go well at all. Instead she finds herself attracted to another woman; a relationship the Station can never condone. Through it all, the sinister eyes of the Scouts see all. Freedom, for all involved, must be won again and again.

Wanted: Short Stories

I'm going to be an editor again. This time it's for the "Coming Together" series, with a book titled "Coming Together: In Flux."

The theme of this anthology is transformation of the body or mind. We're not talking about something as easy as changing jobs, changing homes, or even becoming a lifestyle submissive. This is about what happens to your personal and sexual experience when your body or mind changes in some fundamental way, whether natural, artificial, or supernatural. Sales proceeds and related donations will benefit the Woodhull Freedom Foundation, whose mission is to affirm sexual freedom as a fundamental human right.

Full details at the link above. Submission deadline is August 15th, 2011.
