Review: A Confederate Girl's Diary

I downloaded the diary on my Kindle (I adore reading diaries), anyway, this diary by Sarah Morgan Dawson written during the American Civil War. For anyone writing or interested in this era this book is a must read.

Just a small list of what Sarah writes about.
Her brother's death in a duel in 1861.
Her father (a wealthy judge in Baton Rouge) dies very soon after.
Her feeling ashamed for wearing a confederate flag pinned to her dress in front of Yankee gentleman. Out of the crowd only she and 2 other friends wore them and she was later disgusted at showing herself up and being stared at.
The tale she writes of when the town is shelled and her mother and sister, sister-in-law, five babies and slaves fleeing with barely nothing. Their mother can barely run so a kind fellow stops and she catches a ride with him, leaving her two daughters alone to flee the city. They later return to their home only to nervously wait to do it all again at a moment's notice. Sarah is embarrassed to be return atop a mule train and luggage.
She has a 'fleeing bag' which she straps to her hoops under her skirts in case they have to run from the house. Talks of grabbing toothbrushes, etc, as they flee.
Looking to buy shoes in the city and unable to find them and has to buy boy's boots.
She is armed with a knife and her sister has a pistol.
She wishes only to be a boy and join her brothers fighting. She even contemplates dressing as a boy, but when laying out her brother's clothes, she is too frightened to put them on, though she mentions other friends have done it and she applauds their courage to do so.
At one point she returns back to their home alone (after fleeing) to finish packing their belongings. She is alone all day packing while soldiers march outside. She cleans for the first time in her life and is mortified by the state of her hands. (what strikes me here is that before the shelling of the town, they had their sisters to chaperone them on a simple walk, but in the midst of a battle and with hordes of men stripping the city of valuables, she is allowed to return to the house and pack their belongings alone. In the evening her mother and sister finally join her. The slaves have gone, but some return. Also her sister, alone, went about the town getting passes etc.

Sarah's writings of this time in history is like being there and makes for fascinating research.

Shout out!!

I just wanted to do a shout out for my dear friend, Tracey O'hara, whose 2nd book is out for pre-order!

Tracey is a talented writer and a beautiful person, and I'm happy to call her my friend.
If you like dark urban paranormal, or want to try something different, then read Tracey's books. Death's Sweet Embrace is Tracey's second book out.

About the Death's Sweet Embrace.
After thousands of years of secret conflict, humans and parahumans have reached an uneasy truce. But unspeakable evil now threatens to shatter the tenuous peace.

Teenaged shapeshifters are being slaughtered by a twisted, sadistic serial killer who rips their still-beating hearts from their paralyzed bodies. A task force must be formed to halt the madness—a union of avengers including the vampiric Aeternus, Christian Laroque and Antoinette Petrescu, as well as Kitt Jordan and Raven Matokwe, members of enemy Animalian tribes…and forbidden lovers.
A centuries-old blood feud has divided their peoples—pitting wolf against snow leopard in a battle to the death—and if their passion is discovered it will doom them both. But past hostilities must be put aside in light of the scourge that is now upon them. For the killer they seek is but the first sign of a blossoming terror rising up from their long-buried pasts: the all-consuming nightmare of The Dark Brethren.

Book one is Night's Cold Kiss.
The tension between the Aeternus, an ancient vampiric people, and humanity has been mounting for over a century. But when rogue vampires begin to drain humans in order to achieve an illegal blood-high, all bets are off.

After the death of her parents, Antoinette Petrescu devoted her life to becoming one of the top Venators, the elite hunters who destroy the rogue Necrodreniacs. Her kill count is legendary and her skills superb.

But now the serial killer who killed her parents has returned. And to stop him Antoinette must join forces not only with the Aeternus, but also their most legendary killer. One that is both dangerously attractive, and involved in buried secrets of her past. More dangerous still, a dark attraction grows between them--one that could doom both races.

The Crown in Heather by N. Gemini Sasson

This is one book I highly recommend. I love medieval, it's one of my favourite genres to read. I am not a fan of first person, which this book is, but the writing was so good, so involving that I was soon, within the first three pages, absolutely hooked.

The story of Robert the Bruce, the English dominance and Scotland's struggles for Independence is told through the eyes of Robert the Bruce, Prince Edward of England and a Scottish lesser nobleman, James Douglas. When reading from each person's point of view you are taken into their world with such deft writing that is so well craft and absorbing that you forget the world around you, at least I did.

The Crown in Heather by N. Gemini Sasson is an outstanding read and the author should be widely praised for her portrayal of a turbulent time in Scotland's history. The detailed research is richly woven into a magnificent story that blends seamlessly between the facts as we know them and authoritative fiction.

Do yourself a favour and buy this book. It is a keeper for me on my Kindle and one I will also buy in paperback.

With the wonderful speed of Kindle I am buying the sequel, Worth Dying For. I believe there is a third book to be written.

 Hooked On You

Katie Edwards is 28, single, and living the life - or so she thinks. After leaving a groping boss, who enjoyed putting the personal in personal assistant, Katie lands a job as an assistant for Liam Kennedy, a sports freak.
She hates sports, and not only is Liam a sports fanatic, but he's good at everything. The last thing Katie expects is to fall in love. But he's simply sex on legs. And the longer they're working together, the more she wants him.
Working for a sexy man sounded fabulous, but she should have been careful what she wished for, because gorgeous employers are a hazard to the heart. Now, Katie's in lust and he thinks she's a dizzy chick who only knows how to party.
How can she be professional when all she wants is to hop into his bed?
Will he ever take her seriously enough to see how perfect they'd be for each other? Or is she doomed to be hooked on him forever?

RWA Queensland Flood Appeal (books)

Like everyone I've been watching the flood devastation in Queensland and am so sorry for the loss of those affected. Romance Writers of Australia have started a book appeal for flood victims and to help support that I'm copying their blog post here to help spread the word.

RWA Flooded Communities Book Appeal

We've all seen the devastation the recent Queensland floods have wrought and have wondered how we can help. We know that for many affected families, books will not be high on their priorities list for some time to come.
But…
We also know how valuable books can be in providing time out when reality gets tough.
So…
With the aid of some wonderful volunteers, we've put together a Romance Writers of Australia Flooded Communities Book Appeal.
What we need?
FICTION BOOKS! Romance books, children's books, young adult books, genre books, whatever – either new or in sparkling condition.
Please send them to:
RWA Flooded Communities Book Appeal
PO Box 1717
Noosaville Post Office
Noosaville BC
Queensland 4566

When to send them?

Now! And any time over the next few months. The books will be boxed and delivered to the appropriate libraries/schools/neighbourhood centres/community centres in batches as soon as the communities are ready to receive them. We'll be liaising with councils, libraries and schools to ensure this is done appropriately. Feel free to pop a note inside, or if you're an author, sign it.

Questions:
If you have a question about donations, email Jess Anastasi: Jess@jessanastasi.com
If you work in a library / council / community centre / school in a flood affected area, email Rachel Bailey: rachel@rachelbailey.com.au
Cash Donations
If you would prefer to make a cash donation, please donate to the Qld Premier's Flood Relief Appeal or for the animals, donate to RSPCA Queensland.

Q&A
Q. I'm overseas and would like to donate but the cost of sending books is very expensive?
If you are an author, send one copy of a book. This will keep your individual costs down, but will also contribute to our book appeal.
Alternatively, consider buying a book from The Book Depository, which offers free postage to Australia. The book can be sent directly to the appeal.
Cash donations can be made to the charities listed above.

Q. I'm in Australia and have many books to donate. What is the cheapest postage option?
Australia Post offers a 3kg satchel anywhere in Australia for approximately $10. Please ensure the books are wrapped in bubble wrap to miminise damage in transit.
Band together with friends, your family, your writing group and send books together to minimise postage costs.

Q. I'm in Brisbane. Can the books be dropped off?
We have a drop-off point in Carindale available. Please contact Jess Anastasia Jess@jessanastasi.com for further information.

If any other RWA member in Qld can offer a drop off point, please contact Rachel Bailey: rachel@rachelbailey.com.au

Saturday Night Peter Kay

This is a funny book and is as equally as good, if not better, than the first book, The Sound of Laughter, which I also enjoyed. Fans of British comedian Peter Kay should read his two books, as they are just like watching him on TV or seeing him at one of his stand-up shows.

I will say that this book is geared towards British audiences or those fans who have seen the UK TV shows Phoenix Nights and/or Max and Paddy. It's British humour written by a British comedian. I'm fortunate enough to have watched Peter Kay stand up shows and Max and Paddy on dvd and having a Northern English background I found him to be extremely funny.

Some Ebook Publishers

I know there are a few websites, ok several, well maybe hundreds...? that list ebook publishers, but I thought I would add my own very small list of independent publishers for readers to go visit and hopefully buy some books to read.
Writers - now don't forget that this is just a little list, and you must do your own research into a publisher you want to submit to. My advice is to try and contact a few authors who have books with that particular publisher and get their feedback.

This is not in any order, but I will start with the publishers I'm with.
Samhain Publishing http://www.samhainpublishing.com/
The Wild Rose Press http://www.thewildrosepress.com/
MuseIt Up Publishing http://museituppublishing.com/

Aspen Mountain Press http://www.aspenmountainpress.com/
Black Lyon Press http://www.blacklyonpublishing.com/
Carina Press http://carinapress.com/
Noble Romance http://www.nobleromance.com/Default.aspx
Resplendence Publishing http://www.resplendencepublishing.com/1.html

Some new publishers I've recently seen.
Seacreste Books http://www.seacrestebooks.com/index.html
eTreasures Publishing http://www.etreasurespublishing.com/submissions.html
Lazy Day Publishing http://lazydaypub.com/index.html
Evernight Publishing http://www.evernightpublishing.com/
Summerhouse Publishing http://summerhousepublishing.com/

If people know of some more new publishers, please let me know.

Dumbing Down

This time US TV executives are dumbing down Downton Abbey series because they say the plot is too intricate. How disgusting of them to presume so. They do it in books and now TV.

I feel sorry for the American audiences because this show is excellent. I loved every minute of it. I bought the box set and can't wait for the 2nd series.
