Special Memorial Day Weekend Honoring Lance Sijan – See the Photos

Lance Peter Sijan (April 13, 1942 – January 22, 1968) was a United States Air Force officer and fighter pilot. On March 4, 1976, he posthumously received the Medal of Honor, the United States’ highest military award, for his selflessness and courage in the face of lethal danger.

On this special Memorial Day weekend, I was in Milwaukee WI for the Lance Sijan F4C Phantom dedication at Mitchell field. In addition to the dedication, we’re also remembering his ultimate sacrifice many years ago in service to our nation.

It was an honor to be chosen to ride in the parade in his restored 1965 red Corvette. Lance and I prowled around in this car 50 years ago when we were stationed in Southern California getting trained in the Phantom to go to war.

There were more than 100 motorcycles following us in the parade over to Mitchell field. It was a glorious day with great speeches, F-16 fly by and jump my professional skydivers, Team Fastrax. Lance’s sister Janine did a fantastic job over 10 years to get this airplane moved and established in Sijan Plaza.

Read the Article about this special event to learn more about Lance’s life and ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

Watch the 2-minute video about Lance and this special dedication.

I’m in the passenger seat where i sat when Lance drove. We had great fun in Southern California. We honored him and all he stood for as we dedicated his F-4C Phantom at MItchell Field, Milwaukee.

It had been 50 years since i last rode in this 1965 Corvette that Lance Sijan bought up graduation from the USAFA.

As we approach Mitchell Field, you can the beautiful beast, F-4c Phantom, mounted in Sijan Plaza.

A beautiful site– it looks like the beautiful beast is taking off right over the flag in a salute to Capt Lance Sijan and all those who did not come home. We honor them all on the Memorial Day weekend.

On this day in leadership history, May 28th

On this date in leadership history in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco opens to vehicular traffic. 80 years later, it’s still in operation allowing thousands of cars to travel across it every day.

What’s the leadership lesson? When planning your next project or endeavor, have the leadership vision to build for long-term success versus a flash in the pan.

2 quick tips to manage difficult, dominant personalities

Perhaps you have heard it said about a powerful leader, “There’s a graveyard just outside his/her office for those who dared to confront them with the truth.” What’s the recognizable pattern of a dysfunctional dominant personality? Note the progression below when they are caught in a mistake.

Step 1 – Deny

Example – “That’s not true.” “It never happened.” “You’re wrong.”

Step 2 – Defend

Example – “You don’t understand; there is a good explanation.”

Step 3 – Demonize

Example – “They are out to get me. They are jealous, etc.”

Step 4 – Destroy

Example – In this step ruthless tactics are employed to undermine or eliminate the opposition.

How do we deal with situations like this one?

(1) Admit that we’re all capable of this type of behavior on some level. If needed, correct past mistakes and re-commit to honorable leadership.

(2) If you’re being led by a Dysfunctional Dominant personality, know that their behavior will eventually catch up with them; the best thing that can do is to daily commit to leading with character, trust, and courage in all of your relationships.

Please share your comments and experience too – thank you
