Coaching Blog – 2 Important Ways to Boost Your Leadership Confidence

As a leadership speaker, trainer, and coach, you can always learn something new about how to help leaders lead better. A great article was recently published in HR-Brew about what many managers need in todays workplace. It highlights a Gallup survey that indicated that almost one third of employees are not engaged largely because their managers are not engaged with them. Go a step higher, and it often reveals that their managers bosses are not engaged with them. The reality is that a lack of engagement at the top usually cascades down to the folks below.

Two Important Year-End Principles

This year, my coaching blogs have covered many of the essential and effective leadership principles and lessons from the book Engage with Honor with the Courageous Accountability Model as the core. As we close out this series, here are two of the most important principles of leadershipyou must grow to believe more in yourself, and you must consciously care about your people and let them know you believe in them.

This coaching clip expands on this idea. Please watch, and then continue reading the blog below

Believe in Yourself

Three years ago this month, my coaching blog also focused on the importance of believing in yourself. In reading it, I perked up when I saw a sentence that highlighted one of the key concepts that we need in order to believe in ourselves

In that crucible of leadership in the POW camps, we learned that sometimes the suffering we fear most becomes the agent of our healing. If we have the courage to lean into the pain of our doubts and fears to do what we believe we can and should do, then we move the needlethe self grows more secure and more capable to do the hard things that come our way.

When you are willing to suffer to do what you know is the right thing to do, your self-confidence increases, and you become healthier, more humble and more willing to be vulnerable. [Tweet This]

You know you dont have to pretend to be perfect and know it all; you just have to clarify what is wise and appropriate and step forward. And when you make a mistake, admit it, and learn from it. The more you do that, the more others will believe in you and the more that you will believe in yourself.

Believe in Others

One other important thing to help you become more securereflect on the leaders and teammates who have shown that they believe in you. Think about those who have shown respect and treated you as somebody they cared about. They believed in you, so you should believe in yourself.

With this acceptance, its your turn to let others know that you believe in them. The more secure you are, the easier it is to let others know you care about them. At every level, this is critical. The more that people are appreciated, the more they are valued and respected, the better they will perform. Here are two reasons why

The more that others believe in them, the more they will believe in themselves, which leads to healing from their insecurities. With greater security, theyll be more confident and perform better. The more secure they are, the more they will be able to give encouragement and attention to others. And the better their people will perform.

You can apply the Four As mentioned that I use in coaching and training to believe in others

Acknowledge their presence. Do this by being Available, Accessible, and Approachableand smile. Accept them for who they are. Look at them with a positive perspective and focus on what they bring to the tableand smile. Affirm them with something specific about their performance and smile. Appreciate themshow them you value them. Let them know you believe in them and that they are bringing value to your teamand smile.

Simple Rules for Encouragement

Finally, here are several ways to encourage people in simple yet powerful ways

Treat them with respect.Listen to them and get their perspective on issues.Encourage them by showing appreciation for some aspect of their work.Smile at them. A smile is like a ray of love that impacts their deep emotions and makes them feel important, safe and cared about.

These are gifts that keep on giving. More importantly, I like to say that theyre also rays of love Gods love that has more value than we realize. Test this idea and let me know how it works for you.

Leadership History Lesson for November 24th

Thanksgiving Day originated from a harvest feast shared between the Wampanoag people and the English Pilgrims in 1621 in what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. 52 English people and at least 90 Wampanoag people had a three-day feast of deer, corn, shellfish, and roasted meat, plus ball games, singing, and dancing.

Whats the leadership lesson? Honorable leaders know how important celebration is for their teams.
