On This Day in Leadership History, September 1st

On this day in leadership history in 1982, J.R. Richard returned to major league baseball after a two-year absence following a near-fatal stroke.

What’s the leadership lesson? Honorable leaders should soak up every new story of courage, patience, and resilience to later remember when you’re in a challenging situation. Honorable leaders can overcome anything!

Elemendorf AFB and Leading with Honor

Such a great group of leaders at Elmendorf Air Force Base that are getting ready for deployment. We talked about the character, courage, and resilience needed to defend freedom in general. Grateful that they are so dedicated to their work and talents.

3 quick leadership tips for senior leaders

3 quick tips for senior leaders: renew your value by sharing your legacy of experiences, battles, successes, and failures. Otherwise, future generations are doomed to repeat what you’ve already learned in your personal and professional life. Here are three unchanging principles that will renew leadership value for yourself and others –

Preparation – Share it and Use it

Think of times in your past when you’ve been most successful. It was likely a time when you created a plan, took the necessary training, and worked hard to fulfill the steps to make it a reality. These experiences created a unique set of training principles that would be invaluable to next generation leaders. Elevate your value by helping prepare them to take your place.

Commitment is Foundational

As a young leader, it’s likely at some point that you wanted to look for an easy way out when a situation got really difficult. If you didn’t choose to stay committed to the goal, you would’ve given up. Next generation leaders may not have a clue what they will face in their professional futures, but you can help equip them with the right perspective, tactics, and attitude to successfully commit and stay the course.

Live and Lead with Honor

To live and lead with honor sets one apart in every area of life. Honor is about integrity, decency, principle, morality, character, nobility, respect, dignity, and high values. But, an older leader like you can tell a next generation leader that it’s not as easy as it sounds. Fear is always lurking around the corner, and it will take you out. The antidote to fear for all leaders is courage—leaning into the pain of your fear to do what you know is right even when it doesn’t feel natural of safe.

The Latest Recommendation from Lee’s Bookshelf – “Helping People Change”

The Latest Recommendation from Lee’s Bookshelf – “Helping People Change: Coaching with Compassion for Lifelong Learning and Growth” by Richard Boyatzis,  Melvin L. Smith, and Ellen Van Oosten.

In this brand new book, the authors use rich and moving real-life stories, as well as decades of original published research on coaching and helping relationships, to show how coaching others around their dreams and visions–what they call “coaching with compassion”–opens people up to thinking creatively, helps them learn and grow in meaningful ways, and motivates them to sustain that growth far into the future.

Be sure and check out this excellent resource on the Good Reads website.

An FAQ on leader focus for success

A ‘Leading with Honor’ FAQ – “Besides the foundations of character, courage, and commitment in leadership, what else should successful leaders be thinking about?”

Lee Ellis’ Answer – “You can’t do this alone. It’s too difficult. You need encouragement. You need people who will say, ‘Well, why would you want to do that?’ I could have a good idea, but I’m too emotionally involved in it. I need someone I can bounce this off of, to fight as a team. My wife provides that, a couple of my best friends, my professional peers. I have these different relationships that I can call on, and I’m not too proud to call on them. Going back to the healthy part – I think the healthy part of a good leader is to be confident yet humble.”

Do you agree with Lee’s answer?

Please post your comments and check out the FAQ section of our website – thanks
