Giving Back – The Air Warrior Courage Foundation

One of Leading with Honor’s favorite nonprofit organizations in the Air Warrior Courage Foundation.


It was formed by military aviators to “care for our own,” their mission and focus is on active duty, guard, reserve, and retired military personnel and their families needing financial assistance for medical, educational, and other extraordinary expenses not covered by other military, veterans’, or charitable institutions.

3 Ways That Sr. Leaders Can Renew Their Value

“Old soldiers never die; they just fade away,” said General Douglas MacArthur.


Whether you’re a military veteran, a business veteran, an academic veteran, or a veteran in any industry sector, you sense the strong pressure that the world wants to cast off the old as irrelevant in our modern, youth-driven culture. Leaders today that once had influential power and influence are being replaced by seemingly younger, vibrant, more innovative next generation leaders that can do it better, faster, and smarter. Older leaders inevitably begin looking over their shoulder wondering when they’re no longer needed.


Here’s the challenge for you, older leader—

Here are three unchanging principles that will renew leadership value for yourself and others –



Preparation – Share it and Use it

Think of times in your past when you’ve been most successful. It was likely a time when you created a plan, took the necessary training, and worked hard to fulfill the steps to make it a reality. These experiences created a unique set of training principles that would be invaluable to next generation leaders. Elevate your value by helping prepare them to take your place.


Also, one of the most valuable attributes that you can help make them aware is the knowledge of “knowing yourself”—each person’s natural strengths and struggles and how we’re each uniquely wired for success. Online assessments like Leadership Behavior DNA are used everyday for this purpose.


Alternately, you also have to use these skills to plan ahead for your own future. Fall back on your own wisdom and training, and choose to prepare now where you want to be in five to ten years. Otherwise, someone may choose for you.



Commitment is Foundational

If you’re a child, spouse, or parent (I think that’s all of us), you know that commitment is critical to the important things in life such as relationships. Likewise in the area of work, as a young leader you soon realized that need to look for an easy way out when a situation got really difficult. If you didn’t choose to stay committed to the goal, you would’ve given up. Your seasoned values and character kept you daily engaged in the battle.

And, you should keep those skills on hand for your own future. The types of battles may change in your twilight years, but your experience will provide the level of resilience you need to confidently move forward.



Live and Lead with Honor

To live and lead with honor sets one apart in every area of life. Honor is about integrity, decency, principle, morality, character, nobility, respect, dignity, and high values. In the Bible, the Apostle Paul said, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” If you think on these things, you’re more likely to live as an honorable person. But, an older leader like you can tell a next generation leader that it’s not as easy as it sounds. Fear is always lurking around the corner, and it will take you out. Just look at the dis-honorable behavior we see in our culture, and it comes from greed which is a manifestation of fear.


The antidote to fear for all leaders is courage—leaning into the pain of your fear to do what you know is right even when it doesn’t feel natural of safe. Your continued growth in courage will inspire everyone around you. If there was ever a time our country needs courage, it’s now. We need courageous leaders and citizens of all ages. LE

On This Day in Leadership History, August 18th

On this day in leadership history in 1981, Herschel Walker of the University of Georgia took out an insurance policy with Lloyd’s of London. The all-American was insured for one million dollars.


What’s the leadership lesson? Think of the ways that honorable leaders can protect and nurture their best people. Start with making a heart connection and truly understanding their natural talents, communication style, personal challenges, and even their family’s names. It’s an easy investment that pays big dividends.

Article/Opinion – Trust But Verify

The phrase “Trust but verify” was made famous by Ronald Reagan in December 1987 after the signing of the INF Treaty with Mikhail Gorbachev.


This phrase means that there is a finite chance that the person either did not understand or is not capable of performing as expected, so you must verify. Others believe that verifying someone isn’t trust.

Quick Advice on Launching a Connection with Your Team

Are you an honorable leader seeking a stronger connection with your team? How could you be a “launcher” who impacts and influences another person’s career? Dr. Richard Boyatzis shows conclusively that relationship connections help people create change that is holistic and sustainable.  


We’re excited because now we can better understand and be even more confident in the process we call Connecting with the Heart. Let’s look at some practical ways that you can be a career and life coach that launches people into being their best authentic self –


 



Become mindful (aware) of yourself and the other person. Lower your intensity, relax, and set all your problems and concerns aside for a moment to focus on the person in front of you. give them your full attention. Act as though there is nothing else in the world more important than them.

 



Let your emotions show that you are excited to be around them and interested in what they are interested in. Ask them about their dreams and passions? Listen and resist judgement or temptations to correct, change, or fix any response they give.

 



Let them know that you believe in them. Stay positive and share something you have seen in or about them that supports their vision. For several years I’ve facilitated men’s small groups where we do an exercise like this to affirm each other. We refer to it as “calling out your glory.”
