2016 — New Year, New Site

Marilu has reviewed every function, every feature and all of our past classes.  What”s emerged from this is a site that has all of the most important features in a more user friendly version.  Not to mention, a bright new look.

We’ll be announcing the launch date and our January class in a few days so stay tuned.  Just as we’ve learned what works, and what doesn’t from reviewing past years, we know that you’ve learned what works for your total health by looking back over the habits and choices of the past year.  Let’s work together to sort out what we need to keep, what we need to teak and what what gets kicked to the curb.

Shiny new year…healthy new you!

Healthy Holidays for the Furry and Feathered

The holiday season means a change in routine for almost everyone. Remember, your pets can’t verbalize their feelings about this. It’s up to you to anticipate reactions and secure their well being.

Here are some tips to keep in mind.

If you’re in a different environment for the holidays, or have significant changes in your home environment make an extra effort to keep to some familiar routines. this isn’t a time to change the feeding schedule, skip the daily walks etc.

Increased activity may mean fewer hours of darkness and sleep for birds. Keep this in mind and possibly move them to a quiet darkened room for a portion of company time.

Because of their unique respiratory systems birds will be particularly sensitive to odors and fumes, such as candles, potpourri etc.

Extra activity can be difficult for dogs and cats with anxiety issues. Speak with your vet about over the counter remedies such as Rescue Remedy and plan ahead to make a suitable safe retreat for your pets.

Salad of Fall Greens with Persimmons

Once winter arrives it’s easy to fall into the trap of eating too many concentrated foods. Plates of cookies and bowls of candies are showing up everywhere and the farmer’s market isn’t on the list of weekend activities anymore.  From HEALTHY HOLIDAYS here’s a way to celebrate the season with fresh whole foods:

3/4 cup fresh tangerine juice

1 Tablespoon grated tangerine zest

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1/4 cup walnut oil

2 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

pepper

1 head escarole (about 12 cups

1 large bunch watercress, stems removed (about 6 cups)

1 (5 ounce) package) mixed baby greens

2 Fuyu persimmons, peeled, halved, and thinly sliced

1/2 cup hazelnuts, toasted, skin rubbed off, and coarsely chopped

In a small heavy saucepan over medium-high heat, boil the tangerine juice and zest until reduced to 1/4 cup, about 5 minutes.  Transfer to a medium bowl. Whisk in the oils, vinegar, salt, and cinnamon and season to taste with pepper. Place all the greens and half of the persimmon slices in a large bowl. Add the dressing and toss to coat. Divide among ten plates and top with the hazelnuts and the remaining slices.

TAXI

One of the reasons TAXI was such a popular show is that the cast had such a great connection off-screen as well as on.  Those friendships continue to t

his day.  If you’re a listener of THE MARILU HENNER SHOW you know that Tuesday is the day for TAXI TMI.  When the Taxi theme plays Marilu reaches into her memory (her phenomenal memory) and shares a story about a cast member, something that happened during a taping or another interesting anecdote from her days on the Taxi set.  They range from hysterical to heartwarming and there are always a few surprises.

Remember……if you have a question you would like Marilu to answer you can call 267-MARILU1 .  She may play your question on the air.  The line is always open so call anytime!

For your weekend celebrations we’d like to share this rec...

For your weekend celebrations we’d like to share this recipe from Healthy Holidays.  The Lemon Deluxe Bars are included in the Hanukkah recipes but they’re wonderful all year long.  You can also substitute orange juice for the lemon juice in this recipe.

CRUST:

1 cup sifted whole wheat pastry flour

1/2 cup finely ground powdered Sucanat (grind it really fine in a coffee grinder)

1 cup dairy free margarine (i.e. Earth Balance)

FILLING:

4 eggs beaten

2 cups Sucanat

1/3 cup lemon (or orange) juice

1/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Preheat the oven to 350.

To make the crust, in a large bowl, sift the flour and Sucanat together. Blend in the soy margarine until the mixture clings together. Press the mixture in a 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until lightly browned.

To make the filling, in a medium bowl, beat together the eggs, Sucanat, and lemon or orange juice, Sift together the flour and baking powsder and stir into the egg mixture. Pour over the baked crust and bake for 25 minutes, or until the top has set. Cool and cut into bars.
