Golden Donut entries and Freebie Friday #BookGiveaway
It’s the first #FreeBook Friday since my grand blog reopening! I’ll be giving away TWO trade paperback copies of my “Riding Tall” books. But first some fun and then read below on how to enter my book giveaway!
YOU MUST COMMENT ON THE BLOG TO GO INTO THE DRAWING:
This blog posts to Facebook, Twitter, etc. If you’re reading this at any location other than my blog, click on the link and come comment here for your chance to win one of two of my signed trade paperback “Riding Tall” books!
On to a little fun! And a look into a twisted mind… (Not Stephen King twisted, but twisted enough. ;) )
It’s hard to believe it’s been two weeks since the Writer’s Police Academy! As part of the WPA, a yearly “Golden Donut” contest (Get it? LOL) was held. The writer had to pen a story that was *exactly* 200 words (contractions or hyphenated words counted as multiple words, etc.). You didn’t have to attend the WPA to enter, BTW.
The story had to have a beginning, a middle and a TWISTED ending. It also had to be based off of the picture below. I loved this picture–it gave me lots of twisted ideas! I wrote three 200-word entries, which you can read below the link:
I wrote the 3 just because it was FUN. One of my entries made the top 11!
Golden Donut full list including winner and honorable mentions
For fun, here are the three stories I wrote (including the 2 that didn’t place). Again, these are just 200 words each.
This was my favorite of the three that I wrote. One day I will turn this into a book because it really draws me:
#1: HIDE AND SEEK
My knuckles are swollen, aching, fingers hooked like claws.
Air. Not enough.
Every heartbeat sounds like cannon fire. My vision blurs.
Mist curls around the old sycamore. The morning fog creeps closer to the grave markers.
“These graves have been here for fifty years.”
Hope crowds my throat until it aches. Jack!
I peer through the haze and relief brings tears to my eyes as FBI Agent Jack Brady crouches beside one marker. “But the earth has been disturbed. Recently.”
“Probably kids screwing around.” Agent Eric Jones steps into view. Tension snaps inside me as I bite back a scream. “Playing hide and seek.”
My hands start to fist but my fingers ache too much.
Do not listen, Jack. It was Eric all along.
“Becky is our star witness and a good kid.” Jack got to his feet. “Why the hell did she run?”
A sob strangles me. I did not run.
Eric shrugs. “Got scared. It happens.”
“Not on my watch.” Jack’s grim and haggard expression fades.
My eyes fly open. I am enveloped in pure darkness.
“Jack!” I scream and bang injured fists against the coffin lid. My screams become sobs. “Eric buried me alive.”
~~~~~~~~~~
My following entry is bizarre and most people didn’t “get it”. LOL They also might be worried for my sanity…
#2 TARNISHED SOULS
My breath stirred strands of hair from my face before a chill wind teased weeping willows and dry grass surrounding the monuments. I wanted to close my eyes, pretend the graves did not exist, but stark granite with pious crosses would not allow me. They were cool and distant, yet close and cruel, like the masters’ deaths.
Voices cracked the silence like dry lightning. Too harsh, too loud.
My stomach pitched and I melted into tangled foliage. Dead brush scratched my bare legs and arms like stinging claws, and snagged my St. Catherine’s School uniform skirt.
The masters’ favorites reached the markers. Sarah knelt at Master Terrance’s grave. Janice at Master Joshua’s. Both girls lowered their heads and tears wet their cheeks.
I trembled with disgust and almost dropped the Lord’s tool. Sarah and Janice had killed the masters. If they had not gone to the masters’ quarters, the masters would have lived. Spawns of Satan, they stole the masters’ godliness, giving their tarnished souls to the beast.
Satan’s filth would join the masters.
I eased through the brush, moving until I stood behind the girls.
Sarah first.
I raised the knife, filthy with the masters’ dried blood.
~~~~~~~~~~
This 3rd entry, submitted at the last moment, was the one that made the top 11.
#3 A MOTHER’S LOVE
Rain drummed Kate’s umbrella.
Eric. Fred.
Dead. Buried.
Her throat ached from uttering words of thanks as she responded to condolences.
Detective Laramie came last. “So sorry, Kate.” The words carried over rain splattering the earth. “Losing your son and husband within four months… Damn.”
The markers filled her vision. “Thank you, Detective.”
Laramie squeezed her shoulder. “We will find the killer.”
Moments passed before he left her with her memories…
Fred’s snide voice. “You love that little bastard more than me.”
Days later, Eric’s body in the ravine. Her heart shattered, pieces scattered around his broken form.
An accident, they claimed. He had ridden his bike too close to the edge.
A glimpse of Fred’s pleased expression.
Rain stopped and clouds parted. Moonlight brightened the clearing. Had hours passed since the last person left?
When she moved, her stiff joints complained. She placed a stuffed bear on Eric’s marker.
Her chest tightened.
At Fred’s marker, she knelt. Mud coated her fingers and dress hem as she pushed aside soaking earth, making a tiny grave.
Moonlight glinted on metal she withdrew from her purse. She rested the gun in the wet ground.
A mother’s love never died.
~~~~~~~~~~~
NOW WHAT? You may be wondering. She gives us twisted stories, but how are we supposed to win?!?!
EASY. All you have to do is comment below on any of the stories, whether you liked, didn’t like, what you thought, and if you think I belong in an institution after reading these. ;)
Don’t worry–writers ARE strange.
TWO winners will be drawn randomly for one of two signed trade paperback copies from my “Riding Tall” series!
So comment away and good luck!
CLAY: Armed and Dangerous available now! #eBook #Print #Excerpt
CLAY is available today! Don’t miss the excerpt below!
**Author note below
Rancher Rylie Thorn loves everything about men, but she’s positively phobic about commitment. After growing up in a broken family and witnessing too many failed marriages, Rylie knows “forever” is just not in the cards for her.
Sheriff Clay Wayland has been called in to investigate a rash of crimes in the southeastern corner of Cochise County. But one night when he goes into the field to do some observation, he comes across a sensual woman who’s doing some investigating of her own. Rylie immediately sets his blood on fire and he knows he has to have her. And it isn’t long before Clay begins the job of taming this wildcat and making her his . . . for keeps.
**Please note: “Clay” was published in print only with St. Martin’s Griffin. “Clay” was originally published in eBook and print with Ellora’s Cave under the title “Wildcat”. Character names were changed at St. Martin’s request, and the “Armed and Dangerous” versions were expanded considerably from the original “Wild” series.
In a few strides, he made it to the open barn door. Even before he walked into the barn, Clay heard the sound of a rake scraping against the ground and a horse’s soft whicker. When he entered, he stopped for a moment, allowing his eyes to adjust to the dimness. His gaze immediately focused on the petite blond who had her back to him and was raking out a stall.
Clay smiled and his body jerked to attention. He would recognize that fine little ass anywhere… even without the sexy worn-out jeans.
The Appaloosa raised its head and eyed Clay, but Rylie didn’t seem to realize he was there. Just like last night.
He eased up behind her. “Hello, Rylie Thorn.”
Rylie gave a small shriek and whirled around. She clenched the rake to her chest, her big brown eyes wide. “What the hell did you sneak up on me for?” She raised her chin and took a step back. “You like to have scared the crap out of me.”
Damn, but she was cute, right down to the sprinkling of freckles across her nose, and Clay couldn’t help but grin. “You gonna hit me with that thing?”
She glanced at the rake handle and back at him. “Depends.”
Clay raised an eyebrow. “On what?”
“If you ever do that again.”
As she stared up at the man, Rylie took a deep breath and tried to calm her scattered thoughts and the pounding of her heart. It was him last night. That incredible voice and those mesmerizing crystal green eyes… she was definitely in lust.
“Why don’t we try this again?” His mustache twitched as he smiled and held out his hand. “It’s good to see you again, Ms. Thorn.”
“ ‘Ms. Thorn’?” She propped the rake against the stall door, pulled off her gloves, and tucked them into her back pocket. “Don’t you think we’re a little beyond that, Sheriff Wayland?”
“Yeah.” He took her hand, and damn if his touch didn’t send tingles straight to where it counted. “After last night, I hope you’ll just call me Clay.”
His eyes swept over her, lingering on the swell of her breasts and her thin T-shirt. She didn’t feel the need to wear a bra all the time, and right now she felt almost naked under his gaze.
Rylie, who had never found herself at a loss for words around a man, once again couldn’t think of a thing to say, just like the first time she’d met him in his office. Her body vibrated with awareness and need, and all she wanted to do was get naked with him. Now.
“Well?” He released her hand and brought his fingers to her face. She felt him lightly brushing dirt away from her cheek. “What do you say?”
She leaned into the touch of his hand against her face. “Yes.”
Clay cocked an eyebrow and cupped her chin with his hand. “Yes… what?”
“Whatever you’re asking,” she murmured, her eyes focused on his, “the answer’s yes.”
A slow, sexy smile crept over his face, and his voice dropped to that seductive pitch that made her knees weak. “If I wanted to kiss you, that’d be all right?”
Rylie brought her hand up to the copper sheriff’s star pinned to his shirt, and traced it with her finger. “Damn straight.”
He moved closer, so that his muscled body was a fraction from hers, so close she could feel the heat of him through her T-shirt and jeans. “What if I said I wanted more, Rylie? Right here in the barn. You’d say yes?”
She kept her gaze locked with his as she placed her hand right on the bulge beneath his jeans, giving him his answer. He sucked in his breath as she trailed her fingernails up and down his impressive length. God, he was big, and did she ever want him.
Clay dropped his hand from her face as he fought to control the lust building up within him. “If you’re not careful, little wildcat, I might just take you up on what you’re offering.”
“Oh?” Rylie’s chocolate-brown eyes sparkled with sensuality. “What’s stopping you?”
“Only the fact that I’m on the job.” He resisted the urge to taste those sweet lips that pursed into a sexy smile. “And the fact that your brother and someone else are real close to walking in on us.” He jerked his head toward the barn door to where he heard the sound of voices coming closer.
“Oh.” She lowered her hand from his crotch and grinned. “Works for me.”
“About that ‘yes’…” Clay stepped away, putting some distance between them before unwelcome company arrived. “Dinner tomorrow night. I’ll pick you up at seven.”
She didn’t even hesitate. “What should I wear?”
And neither did he. “Short skirt. Tight shirt. No underwear, if you’ve got the guts.”
Dear God.
#BookGiveaway #Excerpt 3 from TAKEN BY PASSION: KING OF HEARTS
Read the TAKEN BY PASSION: KING OF HEARTS excerpt and comment below for a chance to win one of two eBook copies of ZACK: Armed and Dangerous!
Jarronn was the High King, something that hadn’t quite sunk in before. Wow. Somehow it was even more arousing to know that the High King had been turned on by plump Alice O’Brien. Was that true? Or had it been her oversexed imagination wanting it to be so? The doubts crowded her brain like bees clustered in a hive.
A rumbling sound, like a river, met Alice’s ears, drawing her attention as Kalina led her through an archway. She pushed aside thoughts of Tarok’s gorgeous kings as she and Kalina walked into the night, onto a wide stone path and into an exotic jungle kissed by bright golden moonlight. The further she walked, the more she was certain she heard a waterfall.
Alice breathed out a sound of admiration and wonder as her gaze traveled over lush palm-like trees waving in a warm, moist, and gentle wind. The breeze caught their hair, and one of Kalina’s locks brushed across Alice’s face, and then fell away.
In the glowing night, Alice felt exhilarated and wanton, her well-oiled and orange blossom-scented body caressed by the air, her long blonde hair brushing the tops of her breasts.
Their bare feet padded softly over the flagstone path as they neared a series of large tiered pools carved into rock. The waterfall Alice had heard when they entered the jungle fed into the topmost pool, which in turn spilled into the three pools below it. Each pool glowed a golden emerald green as if lights were beneath the surface.
Smells of water, along with tropical scents of orchids and rich, moist earth, filled Alice’s senses. “This is amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
When they reached the bottommost pool, they stepped onto soft grass and then Kalina released Alice’s hand. It was dark in this place, yet the moonlight made everything easy to see.
A monkey’s shriek echoed throughout the jungle, followed by the rumbling growl of a large predator, like the tigers Alice had seen in Las Vegas. She shivered and her gaze cut to Kalina.
The woman didn’t appear frightened at all. Just the opposite, in fact. Her chin was tilted up, her chest rising and falling with the strength of her breathing. A fine layer of perspiration shimmered on her fair skin, and her kohl-lined eyes were heavy lidded as she gazed into the jungle.
Alice followed Kalina’s gaze and sucked in her breath, ready to let loose with a scream.
A white tiger walked toward them, its ice-green eyes focused on Alice. The eyes seemed somehow familiar, but fear caused her skin to tighten and her belly to clench.
Only the feel of Kalina’s hand clasping her forearm and the woman’s reassuring murmur of, “Watch him, Alice,” kept Alice from yelling her head off in terror.
Him. Kalina had called the big, scary monster of a cat “him” like he was the prime minister or a king.
The beast’s glossy white-and-black-striped coat rippled beneath the moonlight as every smooth step brought him closer. His movements were fluid and almost sensuous, and so beautiful he was absolutely breathtaking. As he neared them, Alice noticed the stripe on his upper left leg was actually in a familiar shape. It looked like the heart tattoo on Jarronn’s left biceps.
And then the tiger was growing—changing, morphing, right before Alice’s eyes.
It happened so fast Alice didn’t know whether to scream or cry out in amazement, or faint. One minute she’d been looking at a tiger, and in the next she was face-to-face with Jarronn.
#BookGiveaway #Excerpt 2 from Lawmen: NO MERCY
Read the NO MERCY excerpt and comment below for a chance to win one of two eBook copies of TAKEN BY PASSION: KING OF HEARTS!
A stirring of longing took hold of him. He cupped her face in his palms. “God, how I missed you.”
She gripped his T-shirt in her fists and raised her tear-stained face to his.
He couldn’t help himself. He lowered his head, slowly, giving her a chance to say no, to push him away.
She did neither. Instead, she rose on her toes, her fists still gripping his T-shirt, and brushed his lips with hers.
The groan that rose inside him came from missing her for what seemed like a lifetime. He took her mouth, kissing her with an intensity that he’d never felt before. Her lips were so soft, and when he slid his tongue into her mouth and tasted her, it was like going back all of those years and tasting her again for the first time.
The intensity of her kiss matched his own and a low groan escaped him. She was so soft in his arms, a memory come to life. He wanted to take her to bed and make up for all of the loving they had missed.
He struggled to think clearly as need and desire burned bright. She moved her palms up his T-shirt to his shoulders and slid her fingers into his hair, knocking off his Stetson. It hit the floor with a soft thump.
Each movement she made seemed as urgent as his, if not more so. It was as if she’d been craving this ever since she’d left and she wanted to make up for lost time. Just like he did.
Her low purr vibrated through him. He remembered her making that sound every time they’d made love and he almost followed through with his desire to sweep her into his arms, lay her on the bed, and cover her body with his.
She had filled out, and no longer had a girlish figure but the real curves of a grown woman. He wanted to explore those curves with his hands, his mouth, his tongue. He wanted to taste her again, to hold her, to make love to her.
It might have been the hardest thing he’d ever done, but he took her by the shoulders and put just enough space between them so that their bodies weren’t plastered together. But he continued to keep a grip on her, their gaze holding and not breaking.
God, she was beautiful. He’d always thought she was the most beautiful thing he’d ever known. From childhood through high school he’d been in love with everything about her. He didn’t think she’d known it until their freshman year in high school, when he’d taken her for a walk under the bleachers at a football game.
Her chest rose and fell, clearly breathing as hard as he was. She swallowed. “That was probably not a good idea.”
He studied her for a long moment. “You’re going through a lot. I can see it in your eyes.”
She looked down before meeting his gaze again. “Thank you.”
Despite the fact that he wouldn’t take advantage of her when she was so vulnerable, he couldn’t help the disappointment that swelled within him when she’d agreed. He moved his thumb to her cheek. “I missed you.”
Her eyes glittered and he thought for a moment that she would cry again. “I missed you, too.”
He pressed a kiss to her forehead. He had to change the subject or he’d take her in his arms again and this time he wouldn’t let go.
Here’s an excerpt just for you!
Rylie slipped on her jacket and headed out the front door as Clay held it open for her. The cool night smelled clean and crisp, the sky clear with stars spattered across its expanse.
“You’ve got a choice to make,” he said as they walked to the black truck parked out front.
She paused in front of the passenger door and looked up at him. “I told you, yes.”
“This one’s not a simple yes or no.” He smiled and reached up to brush a strand of hair behind her ear. “I’d like to take you to dinner. The choice is, we can go to a nice place and hope for a quiet evening with no interruptions. Problem is, I can’t seem to go out into public anymore without someone coming up and wanting to give me their opinion on one thing or another. You need to know that it’s a real possibility.”
Rylie leaned in toward him, enjoying his spicy male scent. “And choice number two?”
“Dinner at my place.” His hand slid into her hair and he caressed her scalp. “Just the two of us.”
“That’s a no-brainer.” She rose up on her toes and brushed her lips over his. “Let’s go to your place.”
Ten miles to his ranch. Clay wasn’t sure he could do it. His hands and eyes wanted to wander straight to Rylie. The way her clothes hugged every curve, it nearly killed him. He’d been able to tell that she wasn’t wearing a bra, and he’d almost bet that she didn’t have on any panties, either. She had taken his dare. Damn, did he want to find that out for sure.
Instead of copping a feel, he kept his hands glued to the steering wheel as they’d talked about everything from the weather to what he’d done before he became sheriff. Whenever he tried to steer the conversation around to her, Rylie managed to evade his questions. As though she didn’t like talking about herself… or maybe she had something to hide?
He pushed the thought to the back of his mind as he guided the truck from the highway, up the short dirt road, and then parked in front of his home.
“Nice,” Rylie murmured, peering at the house through the starlit night. “What I can see of it, anyway.”
Clay opened his door and walked around to help Rylie, only she was out of the truck before he made it to her side. He took her hand and led her to the house, enjoying the feel of her fingers twined with his.
He unlocked the front door and let her in, then closing it behind them. “How does steak sound?” he asked as he flipped on the track lighting.
“As long as it’s medium rare, I’ll love it.”
“Done.” He took off his Western hat and tossed it onto the back of a recliner, then raked his fingers through his hair.
Rylie slid off her jean jacket and laid it next to his hat as she glanced around the living room that was done in Western decor from oxblood-brown leather sofas and chairs to end tables made from knotty pine. Bookcases along one wall were filled with novels on the American West, along with tales by Zane Grey, Louis L’Amour, and other Western authors.
“For a bachelor, you have great taste.” She moved to one end table and touched the bronze statue of a bucking bronco doing its best to unseat its rider.
Clay’s mouth watered as he watched Rylie trail her fingers down the statue. He cleared his throat and came to stand beside her. “My youngest sister’s into decorating and insisted that a sheriff needs appropriate digs.”
“It suits you.” Rylie tilted her head up and looked at him, her lips slightly parted, her chocolate eyes focused on him. “Rough… untamed… and utterly male.” The desire in her gaze slammed into him like a fist to his gut. Before he even had a chance to act on his instinct, she moved into his arms and wrapped her arm around his neck.
“I don’t know what you do to me,” she murmured. “I barely know you, but all I can think about is sex when I’m near you.”
“You make it real hard to think about anything else.” Clay pulled her body tight against his and fisted his hands under her jean skirt. His fingers slid down and he discovered she was wearing nothing underneath, just as he’d dared her to do. A groan rumbled from his chest, and he throbbed with scalding need.
She reached up and flicked her tongue over his bottom lip and then gently nipped it. Damn, but the sensation was erotic. He’d never had a woman bite his lip before, and he couldn’t believe what it did to him.
Unable to stand her sweet torture any longer, Clay crushed his mouth against hers, devouring her, filling himself with her sweet taste. Rylie’s tongue met his, her kiss as hard and demanding as his own.
