Drive. It’s a passion, a fire, an excitement, an intensity that fills you up when you want it big. It’s all about going for your goals, reaching out, grabbing on to them, not letting go, and never giving up.

If you want to make it as an author, or in any other pursuit in your life, you have to want it so bad you can taste it. You need to learn everything you can about your craft and yes, in most cases you pay your dues. It takes everything in your heart and soul to make it happen.

A little look at being tall, dark, and undercover…

The life of an undercover agent has to be fascinating in some ways, scary as hell in others, intriguing, and you know it’s absolutely no doubt hard work.

Let’s add sexy because what UC agent in romance isn’t?

Ok, so in “21 Jump Street” the guys are a little goofy–a lot goofy–but hey, it has Channing Tatum

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a UC who’s living on the edge? I have. Perhaps you are even thinking about writing a suspense or romantic suspense novel involving a UC. If so, you’ll need to know what he does on a daily basis.

As a reader, here are a few things you might think of when considering writing what it’s like to be tall, dark and undercover…

Work

The most inconvenient aspect of being an undercover agent is that he must be available 24/7. He could disappear at any moment to report for an assignment, to investigate a case, or meet up with the bad guys.

Damn, that means the bed won’t be warm.

Family

A high number undercover agents are probably single bachelors who haven’t established a family. Likely they don’t have time due to the fact that they’re away from home so much. 

Score! He’s available!

Fitness

Fitness must play a role in the life of an undercover agent. After all, he needs to be in great shape in order to chase the bad guys!

Not Dark. Bald. Bald is hot, especially when it’s Vin Diesel… and his UC role in Triple X

Whoa. Look at those biceps, and, um everything…

Diet

Undercover agents probably don’t have much time to cook gourmet meals, so they tend to eat on the go.

No cooking? A man after my own heart.

Glamorous

Daniel Craig as 007? Works for me!

If 007 has a glamorous undercover role, then it has to be, right? Never mind our current 007 isn’t dark and is a blond.

Tall, Blond, and Undercover is fine with me.

Kickass

It goes without saying that Mr. TDorBandTallUC MUST kick ass on a regular basis.

Really, who cares if he’s not tall? Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible–I’m there.

Take for example Ethan Hunt. Now he is seriously Kickass. However, he’s not exactly tall–but who cares? It’s Ethan Hunt!!

So let’s think about it.

Tall–or Short–Dark–or Bald or Blond–and Undercover

Be still my beating heart.

The life of a UC is unique from other areas of law enforcement. If you want to learn more, do your research within the mystery/suspense/thriller genres, attend conferences, and interview people in the field. Fiction and non-fiction reads and research will give you a better look at the daily lives of UC agents.

But if you’re a reader, then this rather biased look into the life of an undercover agent might fit alongside what’s already in your imagination…

Dylan lowered his head and slowly brought his mouth closer to Belle’s. “I’ve missed you so damned much.”

His kiss was slow and gentle, his lips moving over hers. He nipped at her lower lip, causing her to gasp. She remembered him being a good kisser, but now he kissed like a man with more experience, a man who took what he wanted.

A spike of jealousy shot through her at the thought of him being with other women. It was an irrational thought, but she felt it just the same. Even though she didn’t deserve it, she still wanted to be the only woman he’d ever loved, just like he was the only man she’d ever loved. Every man she’d dated over the years had paled in comparison to her memories of this man, even back when he was so much younger.

She slid her fingers over his cheek and moaned against his lips as he slipped his tongue into her mouth. He tasted so good, of the milkshake he’d been drinking and of the flavor that was uniquely Dylan.

His scent was so familiar, filling her like nothing ever had before. He smelled earthy and masculine, and she hadn’t realized how much she’d missed him until now. No, the truth was she hadn’t let herself think about how much she’d missed him, but her heart and soul always had.

A groan of need swelled inside her. She felt the dampness between her thighs, the ache growing ever more powerful.

He shifted, picking her up and settling her on his lap as he continued to kiss her. He slid his hand into her hair and pulled back so that he could kiss her neck. She gasped at the dominant move that was unfamiliar, but felt so right with him. It was like he was claiming her all over again.

Her chest rose and fell, and small sounds of need escaped her as he moved his mouth to her ear. He rubbed his stubble along her soft skin as he slid his lips to her throat and kissed his way to the hollow.

She inched her hands up his chest and wrapped her arms around his neck as she tilted her head back,

She slid off his lap and off the tailgate so that her feet hit the ground, and moved between his thighs.

He grasped her ass and pulled her close for another kiss. She leaned into him, sighing and sliding her hands to his huge biceps before skimming her fingers over his pectorals and then down the hard plane of his abs.

She liked the way he had filled out over the years, and loved touching him again. She moved her hands further down to his lap. A shiver of desire ran through her as found his belt buckle.

He captured her hands so quickly in his that he caught her off guard. He broke the kiss and braced his forehead against hers. “Don’t play with fire, sweetheart.”

She swallowed. “What if I want to?”

“No.” He said the word firmly. “When I take you, it’s not going to be out in the open at a teenage make out location. You deserved better than that.”

A warm flush traveled through her at his words, “When I take you.” But she’d wanted to give him something before telling him her secret. Once she told him, there no doubt wouldn’t be a next time.

With a sigh she broke free of his grip and wrapped her arms around his neck. “You always were the gentleman.”

He snorted. “Your memory is a little faulty. I seem to remember quite a few times when we went farther than we should have right here.”

She couldn’t help a laugh, but then she sobered. It was time—it wasn’t right to hold back any longer. He might not forgive her for hiding what she’d learned, but somehow she would convince him not to go after Harvey and kill him in retribution for his part in Dylan’s father’s death.

“I—I have something I need to tell you.” She bit her lower lip. “You are going to be so angry with me that you probably won’t want to see me ever again.”

His brow furrowed as he studied her. “You can’t imagine all of the things I’ve seen and heard, and even done over the years. I doubt you could say anything that would make me that upset with you.”

“You’ll change your mind.” She took a deep breath, trying to fight back tears that suddenly burned at the backs of her eyes. “My—”

An explosion rocked the night.

The ground trembled as a brilliant orange glow split the darkness.

Belle whirled around as a fireball reached for the sky.

Cheyenne’s early early writing career in 2002

Q: How long have you been writing? 

A: Since January 2000. Good grief. I was 35 when I started. That sure went by fast!

We didn’t have a digital camera in our house until 2002. Here I am  (In the striped shirt) working away at one of my early books.

I’m probably writing a young adult novel–before I went to the Dark Side to write erotic romance. They had cookies.

As KING OF HEARTS, it was the RT Book Reviews Reviewer’s Choice Award for best erotic romance of the year!

Q: Speaking of erotic romance… Who’s this Jaymie Holland author?  She writes a lot of smut, doesn’t she?

Jaimie Holland decked out in latex and a whip. Really.

A: Yes. Lots and lots of smut. All of the smut you want to read to your heart’s content.

Jaymie Holland is the ultra-erotic alter-ego that I established in 2011 because my Cheyenne stuff has grown a tad tamer. My work is still very hot, but I leave all of the BDSM, ménage, and other particularly naughty stuff  to Jaymie. (Don’t let my mom or sons know about her!)

Q: How often does Jaymie have a book come out?

A: A couple of times a year. This year OWNED, A BDSM Ménage erotic romance (triple whammy!) will be out in December.

Q: So why not more?

A: They ran out of cookies on the dark side. I drew the short straw so I have to buy more vanilla wafers for the host of demons waiting to come up to play… Just holding out for my next royalty statement to show up.

Yes, demons love vanilla wafters. Especially banana pudding made with ’em. Bananas, wafers, and pudding. Who’d have thought?

Q: When did you get your first agent and sell your first book? 

A: 2001 was when I got my first agent and 2002 was when we sold L.O.S.T. (Live Oak Springs Township) to Llewellyn. It’s a young YA I co-authored with Susan Vaught. The orangey cover on the right was the original cover and names we wrote it under. The cover on the left (which I LOVE) we used different names. I have plans for R.S. Collins, my third pen name!

2004: Cheyenne’s first print book signing

Around the same time Susan and I sold the L.O.S.T. series, I also sold an erotic romance titled Seraphine Chronicles: FORBIDDEN to Ellora’s Cave.

This picture is from my second book signing with my first book in print in 2004. 

My first book signing was the most special, and I wish I had a picture. It was one of the most memorable of my life. A young woman came up to me and presented me with a red rose. Another woman was with her and asked if she could have the young woman’s picture taken with me. The young woman was too shy to speak or ask herself. That is a precious memory.

Seraphine Chronicles: Forbidden, originally with Ellora’s Cave

Forbidden from the “Magic” series with St. Martin’s Press

I signed my first four-book contract with St. Martin’s Press in 2004. The first book in the “Magic” series was FORBIDDEN MAGIC. I think there was a “Forbidden” theme of some sort. :) Over a seven-year period, I wrote fourteen novels for St. Martin’s Press. FORBIDDEN MAGIC was the first book I wrote that made the USA Today.

Q: Are you going to write more “Magic” books?

A: Even better: A new series with angels and shifters, set in San Francisco–and guess who’s back, badder than ever….

Darkwolf.

Yes, Darkwolf.

Q: Why would you bring him back from exile?

A: Because I can. And I rather like that he’s evil personified… Seclusion only made him eviler.

Both series were published with St. Martin’s Press. Love the covers! 

Q: Why were the “Wild” and “Wonderland” series published under new series names and titles with new character names and covers?

A: St. Martin’s purchased the print rights from Ellora’s Cave, to the 4-book “Wonderland” series, which they renamed Taken by Passion; and the 4-book “Wild” series, which they renamed “Armed and Dangerous” (and had me change all character names. They also purchased the print rights to the 3-novella “Erotic” collection, and renamed “Total Surrender.” They published all of those books in trade paperback under St. Martin’s Griffin.

The following are the new 2015 covers for the “Wonderland” series.

“Wonderland” series. Originally published with Ellora’s Cave in eBook and in trade paperback with St. Martin’s Griffin.

The “Wonderland”series is now published as Cheyenne McCray writing as Jaymie Holland, with both titles, hoping to avoid confusion again. I expanded each Wonderland book considerably in early 2015.

Q. When will Mikaela get her own story?

The Kings’ sister’s story… Coming…. One of these days!

A. That is a very good question…

I do have the cover to OWNED BY FIRE! I don’t have the story written yet. Here’s the great cover. It’s a start. :)

The following are the new 2015 covers for the “Armed and Dangerous” series:

“Armed and Dangerous” series originally published as the “Wild” series in eBook with Ellora’s Cave and as the A & D series in trade paperback with St. Martin’s Griffin.

The Armed and Dangerous series had been expanded quite a bit when it was published in print by St. Martin’s. They have recently been republished under these awesome covers.

ZACK was picked by Cosmopolitan magazine and adapted in their November 2008 issue. In 2015, ZACK was selected by Apple’s iBooks as an up-and-coming book, and then selected for their “Find Your Book Boyfriend” promotion. It was also chosen for a BookBub promotion.

Seraphine Chronicles: FORBIDDEN was my first erotic romance novel written, and WILDFIRE, aka ZACK was my first cowboy romance. But neither were the first romances I’d written.

My first romance was WILD BORDERS, aka KADE. This book is special to me for a lot of reasons, including Kelsey having a little bit of me in her. It was a book of my heart. I would love to find a Kade of my own!

Yes, I have a heart despite loving to blow stuff  up and maiming bad guys. ;)

Q: What was your first award for a novel?

A: “The Romantic Times Magazine’s Reviewer’s Choice Award for Best Erotic Romance of 2003” for Wonderland: King of Hearts (Ellora’s Cave), also known as Taken by Passion (St. Martin’s Griffin). The Romantic Times is now known as RT Book Reviews Magazine. This is a picture of me accepting the award at the Romantic Times Book Lover’s convention in New York City in 2004. I cried and made the audience cry. Fun times. ;)

It’s nice to meet you.  I’m Brent Weston, owner and head Dom of Club Desire, the premier dungeon and sex club in the Southwestern U.S.  I’d love to have you come by and take a tour sometime soon, or attend a munch.

What’s that?

A munch is what those in the lifestyle call our meet and greets to get more information about the lifestyle and membership to Club Desire.

Club Desire accommodates nearly any legal, safe and consensual kink, and we have facilities and equipment for all of the more popular ones, and try to expand as needed into new areas.

Bondage?

Yes, that’s one of the main alternatives here, and we are fully equipped to accommodate all levels of play.  The D/s relationship is a beautiful power exchange between two people.

It’s a common misperception that the Dom has all the power in the equation.  In fact, the sub has much more power, and that’s as it should be.  As a Dom, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of my sub and make sure everything we do is sane and consensual.  I’m responsible for their well being and their pleasure.  It’s a heady thing for a sub to willingly give up some of their power to their Dom for a time.  But at any time they can take that power back by the use of their safeword.

I pride myself on ensuring I understand both their soft and hard limits before we begin any play, and staying very aware of my subs’ reactions, state of mind, and needs throughout our session.

My goal is to give them exactly what they need and crave, even if they aren’t sure what that is and want to be gently led.  I always try to take them to new heights of pleasure without ever pushing them so far that they would have need of their safeword.  But if they do use it, I honor it immediately, and make sure they are all right in Aftercare, which is what we call the time spent between Dom and sub after a scene, which allows them both to come down from any highs caused by the play, and allows the Dom to evaluate the well being of the sub and care for them.

In fact, next Saturday night a large group has rented out Basement 4 for a reenactment of a Roman Orgy.  I would be happy to reserve a private alcove on Basement 3 for you so you can watch, if you like.

Hello, I’m Sandra Barry.  I’m a sub here at Club Desire.  It’s great to meet you.

Oh, that sexy man over there?  That’s Brent Weston, Master Brent, the owner of Club Desire.  He’s amazing, isn’t he?

He keeps in shape by doing martial arts.  He has black belts in a few different types, but none of us can never remember what they are.  We always mean to ask but once he and Master Dex start sparring and all those gorgeous masculine muscles start moving in a deadly-looking motion, we are all so mesmerized we’re lucky we don’t forget our names!

Who?  Oh.  That’s Master Dex, the one I mentioned who spars with Master Brent in martial arts.

The man just behind him is Master Logan.

I know!  The Doms here are a walking wet dream, and you’ve only seen three of them!  They are all amazing both on and off the dungeon floor.

No, I’ve played with other Doms in my old dungeon, but not here.  Master Brent is my only Dom at Club Desire.  But all the subs here are very close and we do exchange information and compare notes.  I also like to watch scenes with different Doms and subs.  It’s one of my favorite things besides actually playing scenes with Master Brent.

The other subs?  They’re all great!  In fact, on Wednesday nights, we meet at a local bakery to chat, and of course, sample bakery items!  Anything chocolate is usually a favorite for everyone.

You’re welcome to join us.  You could learn about each of the Doms and ask any questions you have about Club Desire.  I’ve only been a sub at one other dungeon but I know Min and Sherri have been at several, so they can give you insight into how Club Desire compares to others.  But Club Desire is widely considered one of the premier dungeons in the entire Southwestern U.S.

Club Desire accommodates pretty much any safe, legal, consensual kink you can think of, and it’s an amazing facility.  There are four basement floors, the main ground level dungeon floor and then there are five levels above that.

Yes, it does look almost like a gothic castle that erupted out of the top of the mountain.  You should come back and see it at night.  That’s how I first saw it and I had visions of being carried off to my doom somewhere.  But then I do read a lot of gothic novels.

Oh, that’s not a problem.  There’s no need to be embarrassed about liking or not liking any particular thing.  After all, this is a sex Club.  Granted, it’s a very high-class sex club, but everyone is here for the same reason, so there’s no judgment unless you break the rules.

The rules?  You know, things like no touching anyone else without permission, not respecting someone’s limits or safeword.  Things like that.  They are all laid out before you are given unrestricted access to any areas beyond the lobby.

What’s that?  Uh…  You would have to talk to Master Dex about that directly, but I can definitely introduce you…

When I first started writing erotic romance 13 years ago, this was a constant debate: are erotic romance and erotica the same thing?

Not really.

For authors and readers there is a big difference between erotic romance and erotica.

Erotic romance explores the romantic dynamics of the main characters’ relationship through their sexuality. As in traditional romance, the characters are engaged mind, body, heart, and soul. Erotic romance is intended to stimulate the reader emotionally as well as sexually. It feeds the heart and mind with satisfying characterization, plot, and a happily-ever-after ending.

To be considered erotic romance, once the main character and his/her/their love interests meet, their relationship must become and remain monogamous. If other characters are involved in the sexual relationship, a valid reason must exist that will ring true for the readers of the genre. It must be an accepted and perhaps expected part of the world in which the story takes place, or a part of their chosen lifestyle. Essentially, this genre follows most of the rules of traditional romance books, but with longer and more explicit sex scenes.

Cheyenne’s Wonderland series, also erotic romance, was originally published with Ellora’s Cave in eBook and then St. Martin’s Griffin in trade paperback. The series is now available in both ebook and print with incredible new covers by Scott Carpenter.

Erotica explores sexuality rather than relationship. Character development is not necessary in erotica, nor are emotional attachments. With erotica, romance and monogamous relationships are not expected, nor is a happy or happily-ever-after ending. Stories in this genre tend to use sensual, explicit sex to arouse the reader sexually, and to broaden the reader’s perspective of human sexuality.

To take this a step further, how is erotica different than pornography?

Porn is simply sex, strung together scene by scene with no plot, no relationships, no emotional involvement beyond the sexual act. It is designed only to stimulate the reader or watcher of the genre.

The distinctions between the genres are not always clear, but are often important to fans. Each genre has its following and its place in our society.

For authors and readers of erotic romance, it’s all about love, relationships, and happily-ever-afters…along with lots of great sex.

Long gone are the days where couples fall in love the traditional ways: school, work, nightclubs, church, and the produce department of the local grocery store.

These days, there are plenty of people meeting their Mr. or Mrs. Right through online dating services. To give you an idea of just how popular online dating has become, check out these fun statistics regarding relationships that began on the World Wide Web.

About 40% of the entire population of singles in the U.S. use online dating services.1
According to a study, one-in-five adults ranging from 25-34 years old have used online dating.2
An estimated 4% of married or committed Americans say they met their significant other online.2
23% of online daters have met a spouse or long term partner thanks

to web based dating services.3
53% of internet users believe that online dating allows people to find a better match.3
30% of female online daters have asked someone to help them create or review their dating profile.3
Only 16% of male online daters have asked for help creating or reviewing their dating profile.3
15% of singles ages 55-64 have turned to online dating services in order to meet someone. 3

Online dating services have understandably become quite a popular way to meet others with the same interests as you. No wonder so many couples have hooked up thanks to online dating sites and apps such as Match.com, OKCupid and eHarmony. There are also a number of more specialized dating services which cater to specific lifestyles or interests such as divorcees, widows and widowers, single parents, religions, sexual orientation, farmers, writers, singles over 50, and more. 

If you’re looking to meet and fall in love with Mr. or Mrs. Right, you may very well want to consider signing up for an online dating service or two. Make sure you use a current photo of yourself. Starting out a date with any misrepresentation is not a good way to attempt to begin a new relationship.

Remember to be true to yourself and be honest with everyone you happen to meet through one of these apps or websites.

Almost absently, Landon rubbed his thumb along Tori’s delicate jawline while they both remained quiet. He liked the way she fit in his arms. It felt…right.

The moment their lips met, she gave a sigh, surrendering herself to his kiss. That sense of surrender fueled him, somehow making him desire her even more than he already did.

He moved his lips over hers, hungry for the taste of her, the feel of her. Her scent filled him, as if a part of her was now inside him. Her lips were so soft, her taste exquisite on his tongue. God, he knew he could never get enough of her.

She leaned into him as their body heat melded, fusing them together in a way that defied explanation. Her sighs turned into a soft moan as he moved his hands over her shoulders, down her arms, and to her waist. She was wearing one of her new T-shirts and he pushed the hem up just enough that he could feel her soft skin along the waistband. He gripped her slender waist in his hands, his fingers brushing the base of her spine where she’d been tattooed.

Her hunger and his grew in matching intensity. She moved her palms up his chest to his shoulders and gripped them like she was afraid she would slide away if she didn’t hold on tightly.
