Picture Six-Word Lessons for Project Managers on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and moreA project schedule which hasn't been resource loaded means some team members will work 500-hour weeks.

Assign singular owners to each task, review assignments, and adjust assignments to evenly distribute work.

Lesson 37 - Grandparents have different points of view.

Picture Six-Word Lessons for Dads with Autistic Kids on Amazon, kindle, iBooks, Nook and moreYou may have parents who feel obligated to give their opinion on how you should be raising your ASD child. Watch out for conflicting or uninformed opinions which drive a wedge between you and your spouse, particularly if there is no prior experience with ASD. Accept their opinion then together with your spouse decide what to do with it.

Lesson 37 - Risks and issues, what's the difference?

Picture Six-Word Lessons for Project Managers on Amazon, kindle, iBooks, Nook and moreRisks and issues commonly get lumped together and managed only when the poop is about to hit the fan.

Risks need to be mitigated to avoid their becoming issues. Issues are problems which need to be dealt with.

Lesson 26 - Will he get married someday?

[image error] Six-Word Lessons for Dads with Autistic Kids on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and moreMany with ASD are happily married and have found the perfect mate to share their life with. Trevor has the desire to be married someday but is not preoccupied with the notion. He is more focused on working toward a successful career in the film industry.

Lesson 38 - Risk management, not cover your butt!

[image error] Six-Word Lessons for Project Managers on Amazon, kindle, iBooks, Nook and moreRisks grow out of project assumptions. Many PMs use assumptions as an, "I told you so" if the project goes south.

Risks need to be actively managed in regular status reporting and assessed as to whether the risk is coming true.

Lesson 28 - Will he ever have any friends?

Picture Six-Word Lessons for Dads with Autistic Kids on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and moreMaking friends was certainly one of Trevor's major challenges growing up. Up until he was in ninth grade, he had a few casual friends, but didn't have a strong desire to make or have friends. The older he got, the more he wanted friends, but it was always difficult to form those friendships. He still struggles in this area, but has made great strides at learning skills and making the effort to make and maintain friendships.

Lesson 39 - Great risk mitigation, what, who, when.

Picture Six-Word Lessons for Project Managers on Amazon, kindle, iBooks, Nook and moreSimply identifying that a risk exists is not doing nearly enough to ensure the risk doesn't impact the project.

Good risk mitigation articulates what the mitigation is, who owns doing it, and when the risk is no longer a risk.

Lesson 40 - Risk impact: all aren't created equal.

Picture Six-Word Lessons for Project Managers on Amazon, kindle, iBooks, Nook and moreProjects will have many risks; some which can blow it from the water and others that can have little impact.

Articulate and manage the big risks. Don't let the little risks which are unlikely to derail you chew up cycles.

Lesson 38 - Beware some sports will frustrate him.

Picture Six-Word Lessons for Dads with Autistic Kids on Amazon, kindle, iBooks, Nook and moreWe signed Trevor up for soccer when he was four. When on the field he would stand there and cry. What we learned was that the randomness of play and the yelling by parents and other kids was too much for him to take. We found more orderly sports like baseball and tennis to be more palatable to him, though he was never really passionate about either playing or watching sports.

Lesson 27 - Will his children also have ASD?

Picture Six-Word Lessons for Dads with Autistic Kids on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and moreGive that there is no one clear cause of ASD, it's difficult to say whether or not a parent with ASD will have children with ASD.  One of Trevor's teachers in college has Asperger's and has a child with Asperger's and one non-ASD child. The more important question is whether your child wants and is capable of being a parent; not whether your child will have a child with ASD.
