Lesson 13 - Beta technologies: first off the cliff

Picture Six-Word Lessons for Project Managers on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and othersIt's cool to be bleeding edge with new technologies. Not having stood the test of time could be problematic.

Sometimes it makes sense to use beta technologies; do articulate the risks in doing so and decide based on the facts.

Lesson 15 - They have difficulty expressing their feelings.

Picture Six-Word Lessons for Dads with Autistic Kids on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and moreMany with ASD have difficult verbalizing feelings of happiness, sadness, anger, etc. You can definitely see through their actions how they are feeling, but they are less likely to verbalize it. Trevor as an adult still has difficulty with this at times and gets frustrated with himself when he can't verbalize his feelings.

Lesson 12 - They may have very obsessive interests

Picture Six-Word Lessons for Dads with Autistic Kids on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and othersFrom early on, Trevor showed obsessive interests in certain things. At age two it was puzzles. At age five it was the television show Blues Clues. Throughout his childhood he was obsessed with drawing just about anything. He still has strong interests such as movies (fortunately that is his chosen profession) but is not nearly as obsessive as when he was younger.

Lesson 10 - Solutions include strategy, people, process, technology.

Picture Six-Word Lessons for Project Managers on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and othersToo often solutions center on technologies. Technologies are the enabler, not the hub of the solution.

Know your business strategy, your desired to-be process and people goals, and then leverage technology.

Lesson 13 - They just want to be alone.

Picture Six-Word Lessons for Dads with Autistic Kids on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and othersMany with ASD are perfectly content being on their own, focused on their favorite activities. This can be perplexing, particularly when the autistic child has siblings who like interaction. Briana was a very social child who craved interaction. Trevor was the polar opposite. As an adult, he still needs his alone time.

Lesson 11 - Think "good enough." Don't gold plate.

Picture Six-Word Lessons for Project Managers on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and othersIt is so easy for project teams to get caught up in "cool factor" and increase scope beyond the business need.

Resist the temptation to synthesize requirements which over-reach the need. Think "good enough."

Lesson 8 - Business evolves. Do requirements keep up?

PictureSix-Word Lessons for Project Managers on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and others.Business changes cause even the most current requirements to change; ignoring change means weak solution.

Lesson 8 - Unproven causes of Autism Spectrum Disorder

PictureSix-Word Lessons for Dads with Autistic Kids on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and othersVaccines, tantrums, junk food, bad parenting, television, stressful family situations, or cell phones have not been reliably proven to cause ASD.  While there may be other results from these factors, ASD has not been proven to be linked to any of them.

Lesson 9 - Problem not measurable. Solution not doable.

PictureSix-Word Lessons for Project Managers on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and others.A problem that cannot be quantified makes solving the problem highly subjective and more subject to failure.

Ensure there are clear and objective criteria for knowing that the problem was solved. No squishy criteria.

Lesson 11 - I screwed up way too much.

PictureSix-Word Lessons for Dads with Autistic Kids on Amazon, kindle, iTunes, Nook and others.I didn't write this book because I did everything right in being a father to Trevor. In fact, I did a lot of things wrong in my parenting. I wasn't nearly as sensitive as I needed to be when it came to accommodating a child with ASD. My one goal is to help fathers of an ASD child avoid some of the same mistakes I made.
