Chuck Palahniuk To Appear At Powell's This Saturday In Portland, OR

If you've ever been to Portland, OR and not visited Powell's City of Books, you have done yourself a great disservice.  Powell's is easily considered one of the greatest bookstores in North America and, like many authors, it just so happens to be one of Chuck Palahniuk's favorites.  Therefore, Chuck has agreed to not only stop by for their upcoming 41st birthday event this Saturday, but will be bringing some goodies to give away and sign.

Here are the details, straight from Chuck's mouth:

A heads up...  Next Saturday, August 25th, the Powell's bookstore is throwing itself a huge 40-something birthday party.  They'll be blocking off streets around the building on West Burnside, in downtown Portland.  There will be games, author appeaances, live music, etc.  They've asked me to come speak, and I proposed bringing gifts for my readers.  Several years ago I recorded a two-disk CD collection of the best stories I'd read on past book tours.  Including "Guts" and the as-yet-unpublished story "Cold Calling."  The studio produced them beautifully, but they've never been for sale.  I've only ever given them to readers who wrote to me.  I'd like to bring 200 sets to the Powell's birthday event and inscribe them for whoever comes to say hello.  It's a chance to get something rare and not otherwise available.

And then here are a few more details:

I'll be at the street fair party, behind the downtown Powell's from 2:30 PM until 5:30 pm, Saturday, August 25th, signing books and giving away 300 sets of the "Tour Stories" CD's.  The store plans to close two blocks of NW Couch Street for the party.  I'll be in a tent designated for book signing.  I'm excited about giving the stories to people, and happy to inscribe them.

Chuck will be in the tent designated for book signing from 230p until 530p on Saturday, the 25th.  I assume this is first come first serve.

For more information about the big Powell's event, check out their site. read more »

Chuck Palahniuk's Next Novel Will Be A Sequel To 'Damned'

When Chuck was in Los Angeles recently for his small tour for the new Invisible Monsters Remix, I had the pleasure of taking him out to dinner.  And while gnawing on some steak (...I was.  Chuck had the salmon), we got to talking about his next book.  And lo and behold... the next novel will be Chuck's first sequel!

Here is a quick synopsis of the book:

(*MILD SPOILERS HERE, if you haven't yet read Damned)

The next novel will follow Madison back to earth as a ghost, doomed to haunting her parents for a year.  In flashback we see her earlier childhood, including the death of the kitten whose dead body subsequently clogged the plumbing of the Beverly-Wilshire Hotel.  That death is not Madison's doing, but another death is.  Whether it's murder or self-defense, as a ten-year-old Madison kills someone horrifically, and that's the most-likely reason why she was damned in the first place.  We also begin to recognize a centuries-long conspiracy engineered to train and test Maddy for her role as the savior of all spiritual beings.

Nope, nothing subtle, here.

Then about five minutes after Chuck emailed me the above, I got another email with this:

Oh, I forgot to mention it but the world ends in this next book.

So yeah, nothing subtle indeed.

Chuck told me that even the title for the book is in flux right now.  During our dinner conversation it was to be called Doomsday.  Now it might be titled Doomed.  Which one do you like better?

Believe it or not, this book might drop as early as this Fall! It's pretty much in its final editing stages. But these things have a way of changing last minute, so no promises.

Till then, let's hear your thoughts on this. For years, people have clamoured for the much rumored sequel to Rant, yet haven't gotten it yet.  So when Chuck began telling fans that Damned too, would be part of its own trilogy, I think we were all a little skeptical. But alas, the Chuckster is delivering very quickly on this one.  Are you pumped?

If you haven't read Damned yet, now would be a good time.

For any of you that weren't able to attend Chuck's reading at the Skirball Cultural Center last night... man, you totally missed out!  Kidding. (but it was great)  But fear not, Chuck will be at Dark Delicacies Bookstore today in Burbank.  This event will not feature a reading or a Q&A, but Chuck will (just) be signing copies of the new Invisible Monsters Remix.

July 18

Los Angeles, CA
Dark Delicacies Bookstore, 3pm

3512 West Magnolia Boulevard

Burbank, CA  91505

I have been told that the event will go until the last person has their book signed.  But out of respect, try and show up during start-time so Chuck isn't there too late.
