It's Over
Looking back, I'm amazed to have reached this point. The series started with Hostile Witness, a book that was intended to be a stand alone novel until an editor at Penguin Putnam suggested a three-book contract. It was readers who wanted the saga to continue.
I had never written a series and in some way that was a blessing. I had no preconceived notion of how a series should be put together, so I decided to let the characters live their lives.
Josie and her cobbled together family shared the spotlight. When one faced a challenge the others came to his or her aid. I write in the same way I would write about my family: a pod of people who love one another, don't always agree, have flaws, can be both frustrating and forgiving, but above all they are loyal, courageous and honorable.
In The 9th Witness I brought the saga full circle. Josie is alone as she was in Hostile Witness. And, as in the first book a desperate woman needs her help. In a no-good-deed-goes-unpunished story, Josie must redefine herself, her family, and above all her commitment to doing what is right when the easy thing would be to turn her back.
I am so grateful to all of you who have seen Josie grow (and helped me define her with your wise counsel). I will miss her, but I am so glad that Josie gets exactly what she deserves and what she needs. She has worked hard through nine books. It is time to go out with bang.
