Incredible 1920s Documentary Discovered

A new video surfaced recently that’s just sensational to watch for anyone that adores the 1920s and the Algonquin Round Table era. It is called New York in the Twenties, and first aired on American TV in 1961.

Marc Connelly

Marc Connelly was an original member of the Algonquin Round Table.

This has to be one of the best videos of the era. The amount of home movies found in the piece is amazing. Among the 1920s celebrities included in it are Heywood Broun, Enrico Caruso, Charlie Chaplin, John Held, Jr., Gert...

The Tattooed Ballerinas to perform Dorothy Parker in Brooklyn

The Tattooed Ballerinas

The Tattooed Ballerinas

A group of dancers will be debuting a new piece in Brooklyn, New York, on January 30, 2014. I Wish I Could Drink Like A Lady is the brainchild of Hattie Mae Williams, who leads the troupe, the Tattooed Ballerinas. The company formed under the direction of Hattie in 2003. The performance is at the Iron Dale Theater in Fort Greene, as part of the FLICfest, a program of feature-length modern dance. Hattie (aka HMW) spoke to us about what the show is about, and the inspirat...

Dorothy Parker and screenplay, about 1936.

Dorothy Parker and screenplay, about 1936.

Hollywood’s Golden Age comes alive during a special bus tour of Los Angeles locations connected to Dorothy Parker, New York’s wittiest woman who had a 30-year screenwriting career.

The tour is open to the public; it begins and ends at Book Soup, 8818 W. Sunset Blvd (note bus pickup is across the street at old Tower Records, 8801 W. Sunset Blvd). The two-hour tour encompasses stops at the former site of the Garden of Allah, the Player’s Club, and Mrs. P...

Brooklyn and the Algonquin Round Table

I wanted to write about Brooklyn and the Algonquin Round Table today, because the Brooklyn Book Festival is on Sunday. I’ll be there talking about my new book at Booth 158 with Jamie Brenner. While Dorothy Parker never had a love nest in Brooklyn, or tried to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge, there are five members of the Vicious Circle with strong ties to the Borough.

I’ve been giving my Algonquin Round Table Walking Tours for almost 15 years (the next is Sept. 28), and one thing I love talking a...
