In A Matter of Degrees prologue, I explore the ancient Sumerian siblings, Enki and his brother Enlil, and how the Brotherhood of the Snake formed in the marshlands of Mesopotamia. A Matter of Degrees is a contemporary thriller linking an ancient civilization with modern secret societies as the protagonist ventures to uncover the royal secret of Freemasonry.
Here is the prologue of my thriller published by Bella Books and is now available from Bella Books and amazon.com.
PROLOGUE
Long before the region was called Iraq—before the ancient empires of Egypt, Greece, or Rome, even before the first ancient civilization of Sumer—there was E.DIN.
It was Enki's compassion for the slaves that altered his life, and the lives of humankind. He wanted something more for them. Why couldn't a select few be given the knowledge of eternal life? Enki pondered, as he verged upon his brother's sanctuary.
Apart from the sporadic swish caused by sand displaced beneath their sandals, there was silence. Pensively, Enki trekked onward with two guards on his heels. His half-brother, Enlil, had summoned him. Enki suspected that his activities from the previous evening had been exposed. This, he knew, would have infuriated his younger sibling. Considering the possibility, he understood what Enlil was capable of. As the supreme ruler of E. DIN, Enlil had the power to relegate Enki's status of second-in-command.
Deep in thought, Enki pressed on toward the palace. Since he returned from AB.ZU, where he supervised the mining operation, he had been outraged by Enlil's mistreatment of the slaves. To Enki it was simple; the slaves fulfilled their purpose. They mined the council's precious ore, and here in the fertile gardens of E.DIN, they harvested their fruit. Although the slaves served the council well, they had wretched and pitiful lives, ignorant of wisdom, pleasure, or their fundamental essence. Treated like animals, they lived and died toiling for Enlil and the supreme council.
When they reached the palace chamber, he waited silently, towering over the men that had escorted him there. Enki recalled the initiation from the previous evening, and how he had shared with the chosen slaves about elevating their consciousness and finding true light.
"Leave us!" Enlil's voice bellowed from the entry. As the two guards disappeared into the palace, Enlil emerged and stood before Enki, his powerfully built body adorned with gold trinkets.
"You have done it this time. What were you thinking?" Enlil's anger glared through his steel gray eyes. "You know that as long as the slaves remain spiritually ignorant, we stay in control."
"Brother, there were—"
"Don't call me brother." Enlil cut him off, his voice echoing within the chamber walls. "Your harlot mother was my father's only weakness. You shouldn't have been sent here."
Enki was familiar with Enlil's acts of aggression toward him, but something was different this time. "Enlil, the workers serve their purpose. I chose a select few to teach our ways."
"Anu would never approve." "Father isn't here to discuss this." "Marduk would never approve."
"My son is also not here to debate the issue," Enki said calmly.
"When Marduk arrives, you will never see him."
"What are you saying?"
"You've outdone yourself, Enki." Enlil retreated to the entryway where he effortlessly grabbed a staff and, with thickset arms, clashed it against a golden disk. The clanging reverberated in the tiny room; guards quickly entered and surrounded Enki.
"What is the meaning of this?" Enki asked evenly.
"You..." Enlil advanced so that the brothers were eye-to-eye. With the exception of their muscular frames, there was little resemblance between the men. "You are banished from E.DIN."
A smile came to Enki's lips. "You're not serious."
"Oh, but I am. Enki, you are to be exiled! I will spread the word among the slaves that you are a mortal enemy of the supreme council. They will learn that you are responsible for everything bad that happens to them and that it is your intention to spiritually enslave them."
"But that's not true." Enki's voice rose. The guards grabbed him and he struggled to free himself, but there were too many of them.
"People will fear you." Enlil's voice soared above the resistance. "They will know that you are evil and loathe you."
For a moment, Enki's effort ceased. "Why are you doing this?"
"You will never be a leader, Enki. My work will rise above you, and you will be called Abaddon, and from where I will put you—you'll be the keeper of the bottomless pit." The evil in Enlil's eyes flashed, and his laugh would echo in Enki's ears forever.
* * *
At first, his only sense was smell. He was face down in the soggy soil, and the terrain reeked of decaying earth. Enki tasted the foul sludge that had coated his lips. He pulled his partially submerged face from the dank mud and sat upright. His head throbbed. His sandals were nowhere to be found. The only thing he had been left with was the robe on his back.
Rather than the plentiful gardens that he had become accustomed to in E.DIN, Enki was surrounded by shallow water and tall grass of swampland. It was then that he remembered Enlil's men tossing him into a pit. He found the bump on the back of his head, the basis of his headache. A quick glance behind him confirmed the wall of earth, almost two men high, from which he had been thrown.
A hiss drew Enki's attention to the thick reeds that stirred close to him. Then he spotted the black water moccasin slithering within inches. The snake's head abruptly shot up, flashing its venomous fangs, forked tongue, and white mouth. Hissing angrily, the snake lunged toward his face. Skillfully, Enki seized it within a finger's length of his eyes. The serpent thrashed about, trying to free itself from Enki's grasp, but it was no match for the powerful arm. Enki stood. The snake succumbed, and when all resistance was gone, he dropped the snake at his feet. Slowly, it slithered into the shallow water.
Enki studied the surrounding area. On three sides the earth was high above his head, on the fourth face, there was an endless marsh. He stepped forward, into the swamps.
* * *
The years passed. At first, his time had been consumed with his own survival. Then one day, movement in the swamp caught Enki's attention. Upon closer inspection, he saw a man with darker skin than his own. Here, Enki met a slave that had escaped from E.DIN. He discovered that other men and women lived there, choosing freedom in the swamps over their lives of bondage in E.DIN. These people welcomed Enki, and he embraced them.
Against Enlil's edicts, Enki taught the uninitiated ethics, justice, and how to seek true light. To the chosen ones, he explained the mysteries of life and the great secret of humankind's creation. It was here, in the snake-filled marshlands of Mesopotamia, that Enki formed the Brotherhood of the Snake.

What is the difference between serendipity and synchronicity?
Both serendipity and synchronicity are ways the Universe guides us. Serendipity is often confused with luck, chance or even challenge.
What is the difference between serendipity and synchronicity?
I’m often asked, "What is the difference between serendipity and synchronicity? Simply put, synchronicity is a meaningful coincidence. It is a series of events which seem related but have no visible connection. Synchronicity has power and can be guidance, which I reveal in Lifesigns: Tapping the Power of Synchronicity, Serendipity and Miracles.
What is Serendipity?

Serendipity is another way the Universe guides us. A situation is serendipitous when something unexpected and beneficial occurs when seeking something else. Many times, in life, we call serendipitous events luck or chance. The discovery of penicillin is an excellent example of serendipity. When Sir Alexander Fleming returned from an extended vacation, he found that his assistants left dirty Petri dishes in his lab. He observed that one of the dishes had an area void of bacteria growth, though mold was present. This observation led to the discovery of penicillin.
Scientists have been known to have their fair share of serendipity, as well as use intuition in their work. Many years ago, I was a scientist at General Foods, while I worked on the product development of Crystal Light powdered soft drink, I used magnesium oxide (MgO) as a buffer (to neutralize the acidity) in one of the first formulas, while I used potassium citrate in the others. The prototypes without MgO caked in shelf-life testing while formulas with MgO remained free-flowing. Subsequent trials demonstrated that when I used the tiniest amounts of MgO, the products did not clump. While I had initially used MgO in the formulations as a buffer, by accident, I learned that at much lower levels it made a better anticaking agent than a buffer. For this reason, MgO was in all initial formulations of the Crystal Light powdered soft drinks.
Serendipity can also be those events in life which initially seem unfavorable, though in hindsight we realize how fortunate we are to have experienced them. They can be significant and small. Recently I was reminded of a time when I was in the fourth grade attending a parochial school, and the nun called me, “A dumb Marcoux” in front of the class. It was hurtful at the time. In the years that followed the nun’s words remained with me, and when faced with a challenge, I would set out to prove her wrong. Had I not experienced this painful situation, I may not have had that impetus to try harder.
Detours, surprises, disappointments, and failures fill our paths. These circumstances may initially have no apparent benefit and are usually thought of as setbacks. We often walk away from these situations with feelings of letdown, distress, frustration or embarrassment. Then, years later we realize the situation wasn’t a setback at all but something more significant. It was serendipity.
Some people feel serendipity is a fated circumstance since it happens when you are striving for one thing only to gain something entirely different. When you experience a setback, trust that it is happening to guide you to something better. When facing something that appears to be less than perfect, know that it is happening for a reason and expect something greater will evolve from the situation. By shifting out of the “poor me” attitude, and expecting something better, you’re also influencing the Law of Attraction to create something beneficial.
Both synchronicity and serendipity are signs from Spirit. They are Lifesigns, messages from the Universe to help us live happier and more fulfilling lives.

Character from “Back to Salem” actually existed?
Could it be that a character from Back to Salem existed and secrets of her fate are in my novel?
Salem Witch Trials Book
While writing my first novel I came to realize that many of the situations I was writing were a glimpse of my future. It was this realization that gave me the idea of Back to Salem, where the protagonist is a precognitive novelist and starts to see the plot of her suspense thriller emerge in her life.
A phenomenon closely related to precognition is retrocognition, the ability to tune into a past event psychically. Both precognition and retrocognition are claircognizance, the psychic process of clear thinking. Creative individuals, particularly writers, musicians, and artists often tap a stream of consciousness from other eras. When writing in this inspirational state, we will routinely find echoes of the future or past in our work.
In my story Back to Salem, to solve a mystery my protagonist has to find clues in her past life—one during the Salem Witch Trials. One of my characters, Rebecca Johnson, is a witch. In my novel, Rebecca resides in Andover, MA, and goes to trial in September 1692. Part of the intrigue of Back to Salem is that the reader doesn’t know what happens to Rebecca until the end of my story. The reader may wonder, ‘Was she hanged? Imprisoned? Did she survive the witch-hunts?’
While I was writing the second draft of this novel, I decided to reference some of the books I used in my research within the book. In one chapter I have the protagonist, Jessie, coming back from a past-life regression where she learns she had been a man and married to Rebecca in a past life. She returns feeling a love that has survived for centuries and yearns to discover what happened to Rebecca. She goes to the library to search the records for clues.
While working on this chapter, I reviewed my books deciding which ones to reference in my story. I remember retrieving Titbuba Reluctant Witch of Salem by Elaine Breslaw, leafing through the pages and passing the bookmark which reminded me I hadn’t finished the book. I came upon an appendix I had never seen before, where I found a list of the actual accused. I was shocked to find this information:
Name – Rebecca Johnson
Residence – Andover
Date (examination) – Sept 1692
Outcome, 1692 – unknown
I stared at the page for the longest time, recalling synchronistic events which had influenced me to name my character Rebecca Johnson. My Rebecca had also lived in Andover and was brought to trial in September that same year. With this realization, I felt a surge of energy in my chest.

Learn more about this book!
A coincidence? Hardly.
The hair stood on the back of my neck. I knew how fitting my discovery was. Tituba Reluctant Witch of Salem stated that Rebecca Johnson’s outcome was unknown. There were close to 150 names on that list, and none of the others said, “Unknown.” In my mystery, I didn’t want my readers to know what happened to my Rebecca Johnson until the climax of my tale. My discovery was not only fitting but confirming, which is why my experience of uncovering Rebecca’s reference in a history book became a scene in Back to Salem.
Could it be that the actual Rebecca Johnson from the 17th century wanted her story to have been told? Want to know what happened to Rebecca? You’ll have to read the book.

Do Numbers or Number Sequences Have a Spiritual Meaning?
What is the spiritual meaning of numbers and number sequences? Could numbers or patterns of numbers contain hidden messages from the Universe? If so, how can we determine which numbers are meaningful, and how do we uncover the message? It was questions like these that prompted me to explore numbers and integrate the realizations in my book, Lifesigns: Tapping the Power of Synchronicity, Serendipity and Miracles.
The fundamental idea of Lifesigns is that the Universe talks to us all the time and sends messages, or signs, to help guide us. Everyone has an inner guidance system, and when it is activated miracles show up in our lives. Lifesigns lays out a five-step method anyone can use to tap their ability to explore the soul's purpose, enhance creativity, engage intuition and energize life.
Meaning in Numbers
Did you know that the glimpse at a clock, a license plate passing by, an address, a gauge or odometer can help with something you have been contemplating? In today's digital world, there is no limit to numbers in life. This infinite source offers constant direction for us, though most of the time we don’t pay attention and we lose the messages.
In my book, I have a chapter devoted to using numbers in combination with the Lifesign Process. I also have an appendix which includes the meaning of number sequences. I have published the appendix Number Sequences on my website so that you can bookmark the webpage and have an instant resource on number symbolism.
Examples of Messages in Numbers
How can this work? Perhaps you have been considering branching out in a new direction, and while you may be passionate about it, it’s not a sensible step and presents some risk for you. So you hesitate. Let’s say you have been thinking about it, and you happen to glimpse a clock to note the time. It is 12:34. If you have been experimenting with the Lifesigns Process, you would know that if you moved forward on this project, it would be supported by Spirit. How? The message is in the numbers.

If you are familiar with Lifesigns, you’d know that it wasn’t a coincidence that you happened to note the time at precisely 12:34, and by referring to the appendix in the book, you would have your answer.
Here’s another example, let’s say you’ve been thinking about someone and considering asking them out. You’ve been distracted by thoughts of them, yet there may be some complications, and you wonder, ‘Should I ask him (or her) out?’ At that moment, the phone rings and you glance at the caller ID, revealing XXX 721-1616. A quick lookup of the 6s (1616) would tell you that if you go in this direction, it would not be in line with your highest purpose.
Number Interpretation
To understand the Lifesign Process and how the Universe can provide insights on just about anything, check out the trade paperback or eBook, to expand your awareness and tap your inner guidance system.

Autism – A new breed of angels or Lightworkers?
Is it possible that autistic people are mystics, spiritual savants or Lightworkers incognito? Alternatively, perhaps angels walking among us? Those following my blog know I don’t review books. But not too long ago I was privy to reading a pre-publication galley of a new book AWEtizm: A Hidden Key to Our Spiritual Magnificence. The book not only challenged the way I look at an autistic person, but also the way I look at this world.
AWEtizm: A Hidden Key to Our Spiritual Magnificence
AWEtizm puts a new spin on autism. It’s the journey of Gayle, a mother who has a daughter diagnosed with severe autism as an infant. With a recommendation that Lyrica is institutionalized, Gayle refuses to give up on her. Instead, she dedicates her life to reaching her daughter and understanding the disease. What she learns and shares in AWEtizm brings hope to a very misunderstood condition.
Their journey takes off when at age eight, Lyrica who was previously unreachable with no verbal communication skills and limited cognitive ability sits before a keyboard and using an assisted typing method writes, “I am not retarded, I am intelligent.” Whoa! Gayle stumbled upon a way to communicate with her daughter and enters Lyrica’s world learning practical things like why autistic people avoid eye contact and why they have fits. What evolves further however goes beyond exploring the psyche of an individual with severe autism.
When Lyrica shares wisdom beyond this world to her mother, it becomes apparent that Gayle is the student and Lyrica, the teacher. Gayle discovers her daughter has the abilities of soul traveling, telepathy, healing, embodying Oneness and other mystical gifts sages experience. Lyrica also communicates with angels and spiritual beings of different dimensions.
Gayle takes her facilitated typing method to other autistic people and learns they too share some of Lyrica’s amazing gifts. What is inspirational and offers hope is that Lyrica shares her experience of breaking her barrier and provides a new take on life, “I love my new life in autism.” This love of life is shared not only in Gayle’s words but also Lyrica’s, as mother and daughter co-author AWEtizm. Additionally, contributions of three other autistic friends add depth and validate Lyrica’s insights, making this book like no other book on autism and no other book on spirituality.
To this reader and writer, it is apparent that AWEtizm is not a book about a disease. It is a book that shatters every traditional belief about how autistic people fit into this world. More importantly, when an autistic person’s barrier breaks what emerges is a spiritual savant who loves life knowing he or she is walking this planet with a purpose larger than life itself. Moreover, to those people around them sharing in this transformation (like Lyrica’s mother Gayle), they are blessed with spiritual awakening and miracles.
There are many messages within this book, and the writing is not always easy. Lyrica’s writing is rich in meaning and offers radical views about this world and how autistic people impact the spiritual evolution of our planet. I needed to read some of her chapters and meditate to grasp the messages’ meanings better. Could it be that autistic beings when activated are part of this shift everyone is talking about? Could it be that autistic people are Lightworkers incognito here to spark our spiritual magnificence?
