What Exactly Are Keywords?

Photo of yellow warning sign

I looked at a website and companion Facebook (business) page that consisted of such generic words that people would not use those words to search for what the site had to offer.

The website owner needed to clarify her brand and then use keywords based on that brand in a new Facebook page whose title could be keyword searchable inside and outside Facebook.

Then the more I thought about "keywords" the more I realized that the meaning of this might not be clear.

I googled "keywords" and came up...

LinkedIn "Traditional" Headline vs. Benefits Statement

Photo of brand stamp

I worked with psychotherapist Liana Lowenstein on setting up her social media profiles.

We started with clarifying her brand, and then I used that brand as the headline on her LinkedIn profile:

Providing original therapeutic resources for mental health professionals and families

Subsequently Liana wondered whether the following more traditional headline would be better:

Psychotherapist, Mental Health Consultant, and Author

Let's look at these two headlines.

First, though, this is the...

Finding Good Content to Share on Twitter

Photo of Twitter bird with book

If you spend time looking at the tweets on people's profile page on Twitter, you may often notice that what they share consists mainly of links to their products or services.

Is this considered sharing good content on Twitter?

No, even if many people are doing this.

Now if you're a blogger and blog at least three times a week on topics of interest without being salesy, then you already have some good content to share.

Plus if you are following people on Twitter who share good content and you...

Lori Ruff Explains Seeing Double on LinkedIn

Photo of 2 cows

In Lori Ruff's blog post "Are You Seeing Double? LinkedIn Profiles That Is!" she explains that LinkedIn's End User License Agreement "states that each user agrees and acknowledges that they shall have only one profile."

In addition, she clears up the mystery of why you often find more than one profile for the same person when you do a search on LinkedIn.

And she gives detailed steps of what to do to eliminate the extra profile you may have for yourself. (I'll link to her post at the end of ...

No Social Media Presence Is Better Than a Negative Presence

Photo of Twitter icon

If your presence on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook is negative, you are better off removing that presence.

What do I mean by this?

I spoke with a person whose very brief LinkedIn profile had no photo and the name of his company, which was the headline of his profile, was spelled incorrectly.

He said he was on Twitter but couldn't remember his Twitter username. When I did a search, I discovered that his Twitter username was spelled incorrectly for the business he is in.

He told me he had a...

Estee Lauder Cosmetics and the Influence of Social Media

Photo of Bye Bye Birdie telephone song

The Wall Street Journal article by Ellen Byron titled "Estee Lauder's Counter Makeover: Cosmetics Company Touches Up Department-Store Sections With Express Lanes, Browsing Areas" is a very interesting article about Estee Lauder's department store changes and the cosmetics industry.

Yet, in my opinion, what is probably the biggest recent influence on department-store cosmetics departments is totally missing from the article: social media.

For example, the article talked about the new express...

A Cautionary Tale Regarding Your Brand and Your Website

Photo of warning sign

My business partner Yael K. Miller and I were meeting with the head of three companies regarding using social media to connect with the target markets of these companies.

Immediately after the meeting Yael and I talked with an employee. He showed us the website of one of the companies. Yael noticed there were porn links at the bottom of the site, which meant it had been hacked.

Yes, this employee said, the site had been hacked several times. He then showed Yael the dashboard of this...

Distinguishing Between the URL for Your Website and Your Brand

Photo of question mark

I had a conversation with someone who felt it very important to establish his organization's brand. While he was correct in this objective for the proposed website, the matter of the URL (web address or domain name) is a different story.

What do I mean?

If the brand is many words (as this person's brand is), it isn't very user friendly or search engine friendly to choose a domain name that includes only the first letter of several of the words of the brand. Neither people nor search engines ...
