Important Security Update: WordPress 3.3.2

Photo of checklist

On April 20, WordPress 3.3.2 was released. Keeping your WordPress version update is important as, according to company Sucuri Security, 70% of website hacks are because of outdated software. And website hacks are very much on the rise.

It is especially important to update to WordPress 3.3.2 because this update is a security update closing a number of security holes.

How do you know if you site even runs WordPress?

If we, Miller Mosaic, LLC (Phyllis Zimbler Miller and Yael K. Miller), built a website for you then it runs WordPress.

If we didn’t and you’re not sure if your site runs WordPress, login to your site and it should load a page called “Dashboard.”

The box in the upper left corner should say “Right Now” and say “You are using WordPress version number.” If you don’t see this, you most likely don’t have WordPress.

It is possible that you have a website where only the blog itself runs WordPress. If you have a separate login for your blog than the login for the other pages on your site, login to your blog and check.

So you are running WordPress, now what?

There are two ways to update WordPress: a) the quick and not the best – the auto update; or b) the less quick and recommended — the manual update. Below I will be giving instructions for both update procedures.

WordPresss developer Ipstenu says that “the auto upgrade tool will never be 100% perfect” and tells people to manually update.

I highly recommend you manually update.

If you want your website updated using the recommended manual update but aren’t comfortable doing this yourself, we offer the service for you.

If your WordPress version is 3.0 or greater, for $50 we backup your site using WP-DB-Backup, update WordPress, and update plugins. If your WordPress version is 2.7 to 2.9.2, the fee is $60.

If any of your plugins are not compatible with the latest version of WordPress, we will keep the plugin deactivated and inform you. We will not search for a similar plugin that is compatible with the version. If you desire this, that is an additional fee.

Whether you auto update or manually update, there are two first steps in common: backup your site and deactivate your plugins.

You can backup the databases of your site using the free plugin WordPress Database Backup aka WP-DB-Backup, which backups your pages and posts but not images you have uploaded. To backup “everything,” you can use the pay plugins VaultPress or BackupBuddy.

Auto Update:

Backup your site
Deactivate plugins
In the sidebar, go to Dashboard-Updates
Under the message that says “An updated version of WordPress is available. You can update to WordPress 3.3.2 automatically or download the package and install it manually,” click the button that says “Update Now.”
Once a message appears that says “WordPress updated successfully,” view your site to make sure your site didn’t break.
Activate your plugins one at a time and view your site to make sure that each plugin didn’t break your site.

For the manual update, you need to use a FTP client:

Manual Update:

Backup your site
Download your wp-config.php file
In the sidebar, go to Dashboard-Updates
Under the message that says “An updated version of WordPress is available. You can update to WordPress 3.3.2 automatically or download the package and install it manually,” click the button that says “Download 3.3.2”
Exact the files
Open the wp-config-sample.php file (not in Word) and see if there are any new settings. If so, copy the information from your wp-config.php file and paste into the wp-config-sample.php file. Save the document as wp-config.php
Deactivate plugins
In your FTP client, delete wp-admin folder and wp-includes folder
Upload new wp-admin folder and wp-includes folder
Upload all new loose files from the root directory
Delete wp-config-sample.php
Delete readme.html
Go to http://www.yoursitewebaddress.com/wp-...
If it tells you “Database Update Required,” click the button “Update WordPress Database”
View your site to make sure your site didn’t break.
Activate your plugins one at a time and view your site to make sure that each plugin didn’t break your site.

A Visit to Los Angeles County Veterans Court

Photo of army suicide prevention poster

(Reprinted from www.mrslieutenant.blogspot.com)

I had been reading about experimental veterans courts throughout the United States – courts set up to deal with crimes committed by veterans suffering from service-related mental health problems.

After four years of writing online about PTSD, I was particularly interested in this recognition that untreated PTSD can lead to all kinds of anti-society behavior.

I did some research, and discovered that for 20 months Los Angeles County has had a veterans court modeled after other veterans courts.

Checking with the court clerk, I learned sessions were held Monday and Tuesday mornings in Department (courtroom) 42 of the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

I found the session I attended somewhat disorienting. Although the courtroom opened at 8:30, the actual session did not begin until a few minutes after 10.

What I did not know until afterwards, when I did more research, was that Superior Court Judge Michael Tynan was handling cases from two different special courts simultaneously – the veterans court as well as another mental health-related court.

And what I suspected, but did not know until later, is that Judge Tynan had himself been in the military. A Superior Court public affairs representative told me that Judge Tynan served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960.

One exchange between the judge and a handcuffed defendant new to Judge Tynan’s court went something like this:

Judge: What branch of the military?

Defendant: U.S. Navy

Judge: How many years did you serve?

Defendant: 5 1/2 years

Judge: Your rating?

Defendant: E5

Judge: Your job?

Defendant: Operator of satellite communications

Judge: Any combat?

Defendant: No land combatant as this was the Navy … I received hazardous duty pay for being in a hazardous zone.

The judge later told the defendant that they were trying to get him into the Orange County VA program although they did not yet know if he were eligible.

After my visit, I spoke to the public defender assigned to the veterans court, who had been accompanied during the session by a social worker with the U.S. Veterans Affairs Department.

She explained to me that defendants must be referred from another court, and that the Los Angeles County Veterans Court is a collaborative court. The DA participates in the decisions for defendants to be sent to the veterans court.

One thing I could tell during the session even without knowing this additional information is that Judge Tynan truly cared about the defendants appearing in front of him.

This particularly impressed me because I had just read David Feige’s book INDEFENSIBLE: ONE MAN’S JOURNEY INTO THE INFERNO OF AMERICAN JUSTICE in which Feige describes how few of the judges in front of whom Feige represented clients seemed to care about the defendants.

I can only hope that these special veterans courts will be set up throughout all court systems in the U.S. With more and more veterans of multiple deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan likely to exhibit symptoms of PTSD in the coming years, these courts will be particularly important for “paying back” our veterans for their service.

My experience visiting a session of the Los Angeles County Veterans Court will be used to inform my proposed project “Solmon’s Justice.” See www.SolomonsJustice.com if you want to know about this project.

Better Late Than Never: Avon Calling for Social Media

The April 23rd Wall Street Journal article by Emily Glazer titled “Avon Is Late to Social Media’s Party:With U.S. Sales Flagging, Representatives Want to Harness Facebook, Twitter and Other Web Tools” is an interesting example of many companies that have been very slow to grasp the power of social media.

Especially with a cosmetics product line sold door-to-door, where relationships are everything if you want women to allow you in to their homes, it would appear rather obvious that social media could be utilized to create the foundation of those in-person relationships.

Glazer’s article begins:

The Avon Lady needs to spend more time on Facebook.

Avon Product Inc., famous for sending its representatives door to door, is losing traction in the U.S., where many time-stressed consumers are increasingly buying their cosmetics on the Web. Operating profit per representative in the U.S. has plunged 75% over the past decade, according to an analysis by Sanford C. Bernstein.

Turning around that decline will be a big item on the long “to do” list for new Chief Executive Sherilyn S. McCoy, who joins the company Monday after 30 years at Johnson & Johnson.

If I were Ms. McCoy, I would be less concerned about technology at Avon corporate headquarters and more concerned about teaching all Avon representatives how to effectively use social media.

Of course, that would first require that Avon itself understand that social media is about sharing and not selling. A quick look at Avon’s U.S. Twitter account – @AvonInsider – shows a company that does not really understand social media interaction.

And on the home page of Avon’s website there are no social media icons.

What boggles my mind is that a company as large as Avon, with presumably access to funding for training representatives, has not gone all out to utilize the power of the Internet.

While perhaps such a large company embraces change at a snail’s pace, if you are a small company or a service professional you can take advantage of the Internet now.

And if you are a small company selling cosmetics in competition with Avon, now may be the time for you to really clean up.

Are You Playing an Online Book Publishing and Marketing Shell Game?

Unveiling new product

You know the shell game – where you have to guess under which shell there is something.

Some days I feel as if I am playing a shell game trying to figure out under which option is the best opportunity for publishing and marketing my books.

Of course, I do not think there has to be one strategy that best fits all my books. After all, I have fiction and nonfiction titles with some only as physical books, some only as ebooks, and some as both.

I do wish, though, that the different options with which I experiment for myself and my online marketing connections did not differ so drastically.

Also, I do wish these options could be more user-friendly.

Two examples of recent book publishing and marketing frustrations:

Amazon’s Kindle and CreateSpace:

I want to try out Kindle Select, which requires an exclusive 90-day period on Kindle with the ebook not available for sale anywhere else. I decided to use THE EDNALOR MYSTERIES, a physical book I self-published for 92-year-old author Shirley Windward via Amazon’s CreateSpace and that is not currently available as an ebook.

I wanted to take advantage of CreateSpace’s $69 option to convert to the Kindle format any physical book self-published through CreateSpace. (Yes, Kindle Direct Publishing has instructions to do this for oneself; I wanted to avoid additional aggravation.)

Obstacle: Even though I set up Shirley’s CreateSpace account, paid for various options, and did all the work, I cannot pay to have the book converted unless she puts me on the account as an “approved contact.” (Getting this accomplished has so far not been achieved.)

(Note: For CreateSpace you can upload a manuscript in pdf, doc, docx or rtf.)

BookBaby and Smashwords:

I used BookBaby to convert HOW TO SUCCEED IN HIGH SCHOOL AND PREP FOR COLLEGE for ebook formatting because I wanted to try BookBaby’s distribution channels.

And for BookBaby a manuscript can be uploaded in pdf. Great! I did not have to worry about making sure all the formatting codes in the manuscript were correct.

Now I want to add HOW TO SUCCEED to my Smashwords account, where there are two ebooks uploaded already thanks to using ebook converter Chris O’Byrne for those two ebooks.

Obstacle: Smashwords does not take a pdf or rtf; it requires a correctly formatted Word doc. Do I really want to spend the time to go through the entire manuscript of HOW TO SUCCEED and check all formatting codes before uploading to Smashwords?

At this point, probably not, because I am polishing the second and third ebooks in this particular nonfiction series for teens and young adults in addition to all my other work.

And here is another little whammy:

If I want to use CreateSpace to convert the second ebook in the HOW TO SUCCEED series in order to try out Kindle Select, I must first create a physical book on CreateSpace.

In other words, although I do not particularly want a physical book, I will have to create it (the price is rather negligible) in order to have the $69 CreateSpace Kindle format conversion option.

Clarification: Chris O’Byrne of www.ebook-editor.com does a terrific job of converting to various ebook formats, and I continue to use him for various projects and highly recommend him. In the examples given above, I wanted to try out some different publishing/marketing options.

Okay, back to trying to figure out the best strategy for my different book projects. If you would like to add your own opinions or experiences in the comments below, please do.

“I Do Not Know What to Do on Social Media”

I frequently hear this comment from people when I am attending networking groups.

And what always amazes me is that most of the time these people plan to stay uninformed while they profess to me that they are not afraid of trying new things.

After reading Carol Dweck’s book MINDSET: THE NEW PSYCHOLOGY OF SUCCESS, I now know that many of these people are afraid of trying new things.

They continue to give the excuse that they do not know what to do. Yet they take no steps to start learning what to do.

I often leave encouraging comments on social media posts in which I share that everyone starts at zero knowledge of social media. The ones who want to help their businesses, books or brands then commit to moving forward from zero.

What Carol Dweck explains in her book is that people are afraid to look stupid. Thus they would rather not try something than risk looking stupid.

Here is the bottom line about social media – even the very best practitioners have problems, probably every day.

In fact, in Guy Kawasaki’s book WHAT THE PLUS! GOOGLE+ FOR THE REST OF US, he mentions a rather simple tech thing he had to ask his followers to tell him how to do. And if Guy Kawasaki can admit he does not know everything, the rest of us have no excuse.

When a person I meet gives me the excuse that he or she is not on social media because of not knowing how, I continue to be amazed. In this day and age, how can that person not jump in and start learning a little bit each day?

P.S. Google+ just added a banner/header to both individual profiles and company profiles that is called a “cover.”
This is very similar to Facebook’s “cover” photo image for profiles and Pages.

Of course, as the second kid on the block with a cover option, Google+ did not make its cover the same size as Facebook’s cover. It would have been so nice if the same cover could have been used on both sites without making dimension changes.

Oh, well, that’s social media biz!

And if you are working on redefining what you do, here is a guest post of mine for The Indie Times that you may find of interest.

Finally, if you like reading screenplays,
consider reading one of mine at Amazon Studios and then writing a review if you like the screenplay. Scroll down my Amazon Studios bio page to see the list of screenplays available.

If You Are a Local Biz: Take Advantage of Online Reviews

Photo of chocolate gelato

I admit it that as a social media consultant my ears perk up when people are talking about social media – and this means I eavesdrop on conversations.

One such conversation concerned a young woman at a local restaurant asking a customer to go online and write a review for the restaurant.

The woman said that the restaurant had lots of good reviews on City Search.com and Yelp.com. Then she explained that there were no good pictures because the restaurant had previously paid no attention to the reviews on these two sites.

Now she was going on the two sites to improve the restaurant’s pictures. And she pointed out that, especially for a restaurant, good photos are really important.

Al Gelato – a favorite local restaurant of mine – does an outstanding job of using photographs on its Facebook Page. (See these photos at www.facebook.com/algelato/photos )

Then some of these same photos are used on laminated table cards with a tagline about how many positive reviews the restaurant has on Yelp. (See these reviews at www.yelp.com/biz/al-gelato-los-angeles )

This on-table promoting is a great way to integrate online and offline marketing. And in my experience very few local restaurants are utilizing this opportunity.

This advice works for other local businesses besides restaurants — even businesses for which you might not immediately think of photos. For example, if you own a cleaners, why not post a photo of a smiling employee handing a customer her dry cleaning? Or, if you own a shoe repair store, post a photo of you handing a customer his repaired shoes.

Use your imagination for good photos to encourage your prospective customers or clients to patronize your local biz.

Amazon Studios Sweetens the Pot for Screenwriters

Photo of apple orange combination

(Reprinted from the blog at Miller Mosaic LLC)

Although Amazon as Amazon Studios has been in the movie development business since 2010, I only learned about this opportunity recently and I submitted one of my screenplays (DR. SOAPY) after carefully reading the entire legal agreement and having my husband the lawyer also read the agreement.

Less than two months ago when I submitted this screenplay, the submission gave Amazon a FREE 18-month option with the right to buy the script during that period or pay $10,000 for a second 18-month option.

On April 5th I received an email announcing a “new and improved system.” Now Amazon has only a FREE 45-day option with the right to buy the script then or pay $10,000 for an 18-month option after that.

To change from a free 18-month option to a free 45-day option is really generous to screenwriters. Plus many of the other agreement terms are more generous than the “standard” Hollywood screenplay agreement for writers.

In addition, screenwriters now have the option of submitting scripts privately or publicly, while previously the scripts had to be submitted publicly.

On the other hand, even if you submit a screenplay privately, the premise of the screenplay is included in the premise war battles. (People vote between two random premises.)

I just checked the scorecard for the premise war battles for screenplays I submitted this week – rather interesting to compare.

You can look at the information yourself about my three screenplays (and download the screenplays and perhaps add a good review) at:

Romantic comedy PARTNERS

Military drama MRS. LIEUTENANT

Espionage thriller CIA FALL GUY

There are other opportunities at Amazon Studios, including opportunities for directors and movie fans. Check out Amazon Studios now.

Caution:
If you decide you want to submit your screenplays to Amazon Studios, have your own legal counsel review the agreement before signing.

Spring Cleaning Your Social Media Presence

Photo of women with cleaning equipment

(Reprinted from blog at www.MillerMosaicLLC.com)

While spring cleaning is usually a physical work concept – shampooing the carpets or throwing away all the mismatched gloves and mittens – it can just as easily be applied to online activities.

And this week, while posting my new ebook HOW TO SUCCEED IN HIGH SCHOOL AND PREP FOR COLLEGE in sites on which I already have a presence, I have discovered that spring cleaning online is important for discovering changes on sites.

And these changes can often mean new opportunities that are being overlooked.

For example, when posting to my Goodreads account, I discovered that Goodreads now sells the ebooks of authors if they want this option. But you must sign up for it as it is not automatic.

And when posting my father’s second book of short stories, “Blossom Winters Is Driving on the Los Angeles Freeways and Other Short Stories,” to Createspace, I discovered that Createspace now has an estore in which you can even have your own banner art. But, again, you must sign up for this option.

Yes, all of this updating takes time and energy. Yet if you are online for the long haul, you are going to want to take advantage of new opportunities.

What about Facebook? How do you like your Facebook Page in the new format?

I will admit that not all our Miller Mosaic Facebook Pages have been optimized to take advantage of the new format’s features. (Yes, this is just like the shoemaker’s children having no shoes.)

On Tuesday, April 10, at 3 p.m. Pacific I’m going to be on an information call about becoming a contributor for The Indie Times.
Join us if you are interested.

Here is one of my contributions to The Indie Times – “Are You Engaging on Social Media?”

(Reprinted from the blog at Miller Mosaic LLC.)

In this article I talk about Dana Lynn Smith starting a new Facebook group that will give you access to free ebooks on Kindle as well as the opportunity to write comments. Dana explains:

Join this group to learn about free ebooks for Kindle, Nook, iPad and other ebook reading devices. Many of these ebooks are free for only a day or two, so be sure to check this page often.

Readers, please share this group with your friends who love to read ebooks! Just point them to http://on.fb.me/FreeEbookGroup where they can click the “Ask to Join Group” button in the upper right.

Today thanks to this group I got the Kindle ebook “Make Things Happen” by Cathy Stucker.

Okay, I admit I’m a little stressed over all the spring cleaning I want to do online plus all the new opportunities I want to try.

Still, given the choice, I’d much rather have lots of new opportunities!
