“I Do Not Know What to Do on Social Media”

I frequently hear this comment from people when I am attending networking groups.

And what always amazes me is that most of the time these people plan to stay uninformed while they profess to me that they are not afraid of trying new things.

After reading Carol Dweck’s book MINDSET: THE NEW PSYCHOLOGY OF SUCCESS, I now know that many of these people are afraid of trying new things.

They continue to give the excuse that they do not know what to do. Yet they take no steps to start learning what to do.

I often leave encouraging comments on social media posts in which I share that everyone starts at zero knowledge of social media. The ones who want to help their businesses, books or brands then commit to moving forward from zero.

What Carol Dweck explains in her book is that people are afraid to look stupid. Thus they would rather not try something than risk looking stupid.

Here is the bottom line about social media – even the very best practitioners have problems, probably every day.

In fact, in Guy Kawasaki’s book WHAT THE PLUS! GOOGLE+ FOR THE REST OF US, he mentions a rather simple tech thing he had to ask his followers to tell him how to do. And if Guy Kawasaki can admit he does not know everything, the rest of us have no excuse.

When a person I meet gives me the excuse that he or she is not on social media because of not knowing how, I continue to be amazed. In this day and age, how can that person not jump in and start learning a little bit each day?

P.S. Google+ just added a banner/header to both individual profiles and company profiles that is called a “cover.”
This is very similar to Facebook’s “cover” photo image for profiles and Pages.

Of course, as the second kid on the block with a cover option, Google+ did not make its cover the same size as Facebook’s cover. It would have been so nice if the same cover could have been used on both sites without making dimension changes.

Oh, well, that’s social media biz!

And if you are working on redefining what you do, here is a guest post of mine for The Indie Times that you may find of interest.

Finally, if you like reading screenplays,
consider reading one of mine at Amazon Studios and then writing a review if you like the screenplay. Scroll down my Amazon Studios bio page to see the list of screenplays available.
