Crisman Strunk is an English and History teacher at the high school level and professor at a local university. He is also the author of the new novel A Grave Every Mile. He has loved reading and writing all his life. His family and friends have been “blessed” with comics, Star Trek technical manuals (big during his awkward middle school years), poems of excruciating badness, short stories, and novels throughout the years. He has also published some of these for the world at large. Throughout this reading and writing adventure, mysteries and thrillers have always been a favorite.

Playback by Raymond Chandler

I am somewhat of a Raymond Chandler aficionado. I don't try to write like him because any attempt would just be a cheap parody. Few writers had Chandler's facility with language, and none have elevated the simile to high art in the same way. Despite ...more

Another entertaining read that had a satisfying conclusion. Not the best of the series so far, but even Macdonald's less-than-best is still awfully good. ...more

A Kiss Before Dying by Ira Levin

A good book that earns the title of classic noir that it carries. A very novel idea carried out splendidly. Levin is terrific at slowly building the tension. You know (or think you do) what's going to happen, but Levin makes you wait for it. A great ...more

It will take me a while to process this book. And it's one I know I missed out on a lot of stuff by reading it (this time), mainly for the plot. I tried to read Gravity's Rainbow years ago, but couldn't keep up my head of steam. With the genre of thi ...more

You Were Never Really Here by Jonathan Ames

A lot of the time, you sort of want a book to end. It may even be a good book, but there are just too many details, too many plot twists, that clutter up what would be a great read. This is the opposite. This is as lean a novel (novella?) as you can ...more

At first, I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this book, but soon it had taken hold. I almost put in a strained metaphor like I had to race to the finish line, but I saved you from that horror. A good book that doesn't shoehorn in a happy ending. ...more

The Night Gardener by George P. Pelecanos

A good book and Pelecanos does a great job of keeping all the characters straight and giving them distinct personalities. I was hoping for a more definitive ending but that's not always right for a book. I'll definitely be reading more. ...more

As I think a lot of people have entered the world of Carl Kolchak, I came by way of Chris Carter. The creator of the X-Files has always given credit to Kolchak as an inspiration for that show. I dutifully tracked down the two made-for-TV movies and t ...more
