Passage To Celestial Glory - Chapter 6 Extract

I stared deep into the guard’s eye slits and again felt at peace. It cut such a bleak, antique figure, the last of its kind, but the upright dignity in which it held itself – the utter calm – brought unbidden tears to my eyes. I wished for nothing more than to be its father, a keeper of a benevolent invention. “I...I am not sure. Just, it is on its own now.” I shook my head. “Nothing should have that.”

I expected a derisive answer but Tetrax remained silent. The corn man, however, blinked and buzzed – just once, but long, low and comforting. And from a jagged hole on its left shoulder, a group of small black beetles suddenly emerged. They wandered in a loose line, unhurried and waving tiny feelers back and forth. The corn man lowered its head and watched them, pulsing intermittently as they danced across its neck and finally came to a stop on the opposite shoulder. There, the beetles stayed, backs arched and mandibles clacking in excitement.

“Hah.” I jumped and turned to Tetrax. The thief smirked at the corn man but some of the steel bled from his gaze. “The guard has helpers of its own.” He turned away. “Come, boy. The corn man isn’t alone.”

I stared a moment longer; emotions swirled inside me – a mix of pity, sadness and determination. The corn man sensed me watching and inclined its head, but I hurriedly turned away.

I could not trust myself not to cry.

Excerpt From Chapter 3 Of Current Work In Progress

“The human has grown in slyness.” I thought I spied a flicker of darkness parade across Symphonia’s eyes. “I do not and will never bow to you.” She glanced behind me and waved a dismissive hand. “Rabbit, put me back inside this arrogant fool until I can find a way to escape.” - chapter 3 of Summons sequel has been completed.

WIP Extract - Three Magic Trees

“Do you honestly believe what we just witnessed was not real?” Josey shrugged. Jared checked in his pocket. The whistle was still there. “I’d rather believe. How awesome would it be to have a magic wood on our land?”

“It’s your land,” replied Josey. “Not mine.”

“True.” Jared pictured the sniffing shadow. “Maybe it would be best if we forgot about it. A bit too weird.”

Josey smiled, as if he had made a joke. “Yeah.”

Jared turned the key and opened the front door. He thrust his head inside, listening for Mum. Contented, he ushered Josey in and quietly locked up.

As he watched Josey creep up to the stairs, he couldn’t help opening his mouth. “You’re always welcome to come round.” Josey stopped and half turned to face him. “Er, you know, if your mum is ever away again.”

To Jared’s surprise, Josey let out a short, bitter laugh. “She’s never away.”

Without a goodbye, Josey took the first step. Jared stared at her. God, why did she have to be so arrogant? He liked her less and less every minute.

“Wait!” For some reason, he found himself grabbing a post-it note from the hall table, along with a pen. He rushed after Josey, his legs on autopilot. “Just in case we wake up tomorrow and find it wasn’t a dream.” Josey turned to face him, brow furrowed. Jared lowered his voice to a whisper. “You can have my mobile number. You know, we would share a pretty awesome secret.” He leant on the banister and scribbled down his number. What was he doing? He looked up into Josey’s face before his courage shrivelled away. To his surprise, she smiled. “There you go. Just in case.”
