I pulled, and saw in my hand a colored photograph of a woman who looked to be about the age I was now. She had hair the color of fallen leaves. Only the woman’s shoulders were visible below the head, she was wearing a scarf of blue and green, which reflected the color of her laughing eyes. In the background was the blurred green of a field. I flicked the photo over. The penciled initials N.B. were the only notation.A cold prickle ran down my back as I stared at it.I tucked the photo into my pocket. How peculiar was it to find this woman’s image stuffed in the back of a drawer? Daddy had gone to pains to hide the picture. In one hand, I lifted the plastic bags of trash, picked up the passport in the other, and went to find Tilda.“Would you mind if I went home and rested?” I asked. “I feel a headache coming on.”“Yes, of course. What did you find in there? Oh, good, Daddy’s passport. I’d like to keep that. How thoughtful of you. Anything else of interest?”I turned so Tilda couldn’t see and fingered the pocketed photo. The letters N.B. intrigued me. Was this just the acronym to remind our father of something important? Or did it mean something else?GiveawayWIN $20 AMAZON GIFT CARDLipstick on the Strawberry Giveaway GraphicContest runs from July 6 - 12, 2017.a Rafflecopter giveawayAbout Margaret Ann SpenceMargaret Ann Spence

Not much going on this week. I'm at the end of editing The Sentinels for the 8/1 release and I've also begun writing Ruthless. I'll be sharing the cover to that one soon.

I hope ya'll had a nice 4th of July holiday. Did anyone set off any fireworks? My son-n-law and daughter went out front with the kids and did sparklers. Our little fireworks display didn't last long but we could hear others going off in the neighborhood until after midnight. They definitely were a step up from sparklers, kind of sounded like the ones Disney does. I hope people with pets remembered to bring them inside.

Right now I'm sitting here in my chair drinking red wine in a white shirt. Pretty gutsy huh? lol

Freebie Friday

Emma caught her breath, recognizing Mike the second she heard the deep timbre of his sexy voice. He made a hunky Zorro, dressed all in black in a costume that fit his tall, powerful body like it was tailored especially for him. She’d seen him watching her while she crossed the room, ignoring him on purpose because she hadn’t wanted to encourage any unwelcome attention. Now that she knew who he was, she couldn’t take her eyes off him.

He was what dreams were made of, the handsome hero disguised in a black mask, his steely eyes doing all his talking for him as he leaned insolently against the table with that wolfish grin. The bad boy every woman secretly yearns for. He had to know how he affected women with his mysterious presence. Goodness, she all but placed her hand over her pounding heart. What was wrong with her? It took effort to remind herself he was married.

She was about to step away when a dancer bumped into her backside, causing her to fly directly into Mike’s arms. “Oh!” she gasped, throwing her head back to meet his eyes just as his strong hands curled around the fleshy part of her arms, catching her against him. Their bodies were flush, and suddenly it seemed like they were sharing every breath, every heart beat as they stared intently into each other’s eyes.

Get your copy here!  Emma felt warm heat spread throughout her body, a heat that had nothing to do with the hot disco lights glaring overhead. Time seemed to stand still. She couldn’t pull her gaze away from his, too caught up in the spell of the moment and feeling way too much in his strong arms, experiencing way too much sensation against his hard body. She wet her lips to issue an apology. However, the only thing that came out was a noise that sounded very much like a purr of surrender, a sound of betrayal if she ever heard one.

“Mike,” she began, in a breathless tone that revealed her emotions. She was unable to finish, her body trembling on a sudden wave of weakness. Certain her knees were going to give way, she struggled to put the brakes on the obvious signs of what being in his arms was doing to her. “Please…” she began, intending to ask him to let her go, but there was no denying the invitation she heard in her own voice.

Mike’s eyes darkened with desire; he didn’t want to let Emma go. He’d known he was attracted to her from the start, but he wasn’t prepared for the instant results she produced every time she touched him in some way. Even innocently, only this was hardly innocent. He felt every inch of her. His hands tightened around her arms, a low groan locking in his throat.

The very air around them seemed electrified. He didn’t want to feel the attraction, yet he was powerless to push her away. Instead, he was acting like an adolescent discovering what sex was all about for the first time. Hell, he was breaking out in a sweat! Her sweet scent and softness was more than any mortal could bear.

Glancing down was his undoing. Her lovely breasts, crushed against him, were all but spilling out of their scant covering. The breath hissed from his lungs, lust shooting a direct path for his aching groin. Releasing a low growl of denial, he felt himself getting aroused, and realized he should set her away from him at once. But she felt too damn good right where she was. As if she belonged there.

Even now, seated at their table near the windows, he remained quiet. Except for reciting his breakfast order, he hadn’t said a word, but Franco knew it was only a matter of time before he let him have it with both barrels, as his grandpa used to say. Finally, when the waitress was out of earshot, he stared hard at Franco.“Well?”A-a-and there it is, he thought, running shaky hands through his hair. “Okay. Look. I know I should have called before all hell broke loose, but . . . but I was testing myself.”David grabbed the sugar dispenser. “Testing yourself.” He sounded more like a disappointed dad than an AA sponsor.“I thought maybe I could get through it on my own this time.”“Bull.” He let the white granules stream into his cup. “You didn’t think. If you had, you would’ve given a thought to what happened last year. And the year before that.”Franco knew he’d messed up. Again. And that he had nobody to blame but himself. Head pounding, he rubbed his temples as David’s spoon clanked against the sides of the mug. Had he ever met anyone who made more noise stirring coffee? He didn’t think so.David pointed at Franco’s swollen lips and the bloody butterfly bandage a nurse at the jail had taped over his left eyebrow. “So, who cleaned your clock?”“Well, there was this pool cue, see . . . ”“Real funny. I notice you’re favoring your right ankle. I suppose the pool cue did that, too.”“No. That was the work of the biker, attached to the pool cue.” Franco chuckled, then gripped his aching ribcage.“Busted ribs too, huh?”“Probably.”“Probably? You mean they didn’t take you to the ER?”“They offered. I said no.”“Idiot.”David couldn’t call him anything he hadn’t already called himself.“You’re gonna have one heckuva scar when you peel that bandage off your forehead. Maybe it’ll serve as a reminder, help you really think next time you decide to, ah, test yourself.”“You’re all heart, David. All heart.” He smirked. “Except for your mouth, of course. That’s more like another part of your anatomy.”David waved away the insult. “You know how frustrating it is, watching you get this close to earning your one-year chip,” he said, thumb and forefinger an inch apart, “and then you go and bungle it by pulling another dumb stunt? Every. Single. Year?”Franco didn’t have a comeback for that one. He’d screwed up. Royally. At least no one got hurt, other than himself. David knew it, too.The men sat in stony silence as the waitress delivered their food.David peeled back the top of a tiny jelly container. “When was the last time you went to a meeting?” he asked, smearing its contents on a wedge of toast. It had been more than a month, but Franco didn’t want to open himself up to another firestorm, so he stuffed his mouth with food and shrugged.David counted on his fingers: “Pushing your limits. Breaking the rules. Avoiding tough questions.” He salted his eggs. “You remind me so much of my kid, it’s almost scary.” He used his fork as a pointer. “And that shouldn’t come across as a compliment, since he’s ten.”Touché, Franco thought, gulping his OJ. He winced when it stung the cuts inside his mouth.“Maybe this community service stuff will finally shake some sense into you.”He’d been acting like a fool for so long, it had become a habit. And yet he said, “Maybe.”“How long did the judge give you to choose your community service project?”“Twenty-four hours.”“Well, it just so happens I have an idea.”Franco stopped chewing. “Yeah?”“There’s a hospice, a half-mile or so from your trailer— which is lucky for you, since you can’t drive—and I happen to know they’re in need of a gardener.”Before Jill’s death, his landscape business had kept the wolf from the door. In the three years since, the only garden tool he’d touched had been the shovel Clayton kept out back for scooping up his dog’s poop. It might be nice, working hard again. Working so hard that he fell into bed too exhausted to have nightmares about the wreck that took Jill from him.“You know the old saying, ‘If it seems too good to be true’?” Franco lifted one shoulder in an indifferent shrug. “But you’ve got my attention.”David explained that his sister-in-law had spent her final days at Savannah Falls. “So I know for a fact that it’s a great place. I can take you over there, make introductions.”“I dunno, Dave. A hospice center? You know better than anybody that I’m not exactly a people person. Dealing with sick people?” He winced again.“Oh, quit your bellyaching. You’ll be outside, mowin’ and hoein’, and the patients will be inside—”“—dying.” Hungry as he was, Franco shoved his plate aside, because it hurt to chew, and the bacon and buttery eggs burned the cut on his lip. “I dunno,” he said again.“You’ll do fine, if you just do your job and keep your big yap shut. For a change.”Franco grinned despite himself. Had it been good luck or bad that put him together with a guy who never sugar-coated anything?David slid his cell phone across the table. “Call your lawyer, find out how we go about informing the judge that you’ve decided to get back into the posie-planting business. Cause last thing you need right now is to violate courthouse protocol.”Franco slid Carlisle’s card from his pocket, and as he dialed, David said, “When you’re through there, I’ll call Mrs. Kane, the director, arrange a meeting between you two. She’s a good egg, but she doesn’t take any guff, so I’d watch my step if I were you. With any luck, she’ll put you to work tomorrow.”“I have a job, y’know.” At least he hoped he had a job. Clayton might tell him to take a permanent hike once he heard . . . everything. It only took a minute to run the hospice idea past the young attorney, and less than that to find out that a phone call from Carlisle would get things straight with Judge Malloy. He returned David’s phone. “The kid said I should get over to Savannah Falls and sign up ASAP. Said the judge’s office wouldn’t waste any time checking up on me. And that I need to keep track of my hours, so that when the paperwork comes through . . . ”Phone pressed to his ear, David wasn’t listening, because he’d already connected with Savannah Falls. Franco picked up a slice of cold bacon, and took care not to let it graze his sore lips when he bit off a chunk. He slid the plate close again. Hard to tell when he’d have the time—or the money—for another meal, so he did his best to clean his plate, listening as David explained the situation to the takes-no-guff Mrs. Kane.“She can meet with you this afternoon,” he said, dropping the phone into his shirt pocket. It was all happening too fast. Way too fast for Franco’s taste. “But . . . but I need to figure out how to get the Jeep out of the impound lot. And get over to the garage, see if Clayton can find something for me to do that doesn’t involve a driver’s license.”“I’ll chauffer you around today. But first things first. I’m taking you home so you can clean up your boozy self. You need a shower. A toothbrush. And a change of clothes.” He wrinkled his nose. “You look—and smell—like something my cat puked up.”“Cat puke, huh?” Franco smirked, even though it hurt to do it. “People can call you a lot of things, Gibbons, but tactful isn’t one of them.”“Tact!” David got to his feet and tossed a twenty onto the table. “Who has time for tact with you falling off the wagon and going ballistic every couple months?”Ordinarily, a crack like that would have set Franco off. For some reason, it struck him as weird penance, because he knew he had it coming.GiveawayWIN50 Hours Giveaway GraphicPrizes up for grabs:

Harper's Place by Sheryl Winters

GENRE: Romance

BLURB: Harper Grey is fed up with over-bearing men. Her father wants to sell the family hamburger joint to her brother because a woman could never make it successful.

Harper knows she has the same flair for business as her mother, and sexy Navy SEAL Patrick O’Brien dares her to prove it to the world.

When duty calls and Patrick must leave her side, will Harper be strong enough to make her dream a reality?
Excerpt:

"I'm scared." I'm standing outside of my favorite coffee shop, waiting for the barista to call out my coffee order. My cell phone glued to my ear.

“He should be there any minute right?” Patrick’s warm voice sounds in my ear. He left earlier than either of us wanted last night. With a morning meeting with an old Navy buddy, he had no choice. Is it right to miss someone you’re barely dating?

“Yeah. What if he says no?”

“Then you start looking for a business loan, you do something, anything else,” Patrick replies firmly. “You’ve put in too much prep work just to give it up.”

“You think I can do this.” I hate the way the quiver in my voice makes me feel weak as if I were thirteen again and the tree scraping against my bedroom window is scaring me.

“Harper, you’re the smartest girl I know. You can do anything. You just have to believe. Are you going to be okay? I can head over.”

“You told me last night that you haven’t seen Terry in over five years. You stay there and meet your friend’s train.”

“You’ll be just fine. You know that, don’t you?” The confidence in his voice steadies me.

“One large skinny mocha and a small oregon chai,” the barista shouts.

“I’ve got to go. I’ll call you back later.” Clicking on my cell, I drop it into my pocket. I accept both coffees and head for one of the small tables outside.

“Hey, just in time.” Tony drops onto the empty seat. The mid-morning sun shines on his thinning, dark hair.

Thank God, I take after Mom. If all goes well, I’ll have a full head of hair when I’m sixty. I slide over his skinny mocha.

“Thanks for ordering. I hate to wait. I used to drink Breve’s, full of half and a half and whipped cream, but the Doc yelled at me. Now it’s diet yuck.” He takes a sip of his coffee and shudders. “Dad says you’re dating Patrick O'Brien. That’s an impressive choice…for you.”

“I am dating Patrick that much is true.” I can do this. Tony’s a jerk, but I need the business loan.

“So what is this all about? Please tell me it’s not about that damned restaurant again.”

“I offered to buy Just Burgers from Dad.”

“Dear God why!?”

If I wasn’t so angry, I’d laugh at the look of shock on Tony’s face. “Because I can make something of it, Tony. Don’t do what Dad does, just hear me out. I’ve spent a lot of time researching it.”

“Just Burgers has both feet in the grave, Harper. That restaurant is in a bad neighborhood. Hell, even the clientele has completely given up on it. It would take a miracle to pull it out.” Tony rubs his forehead. “Only an idiot would buy it.” He holds up his left hand with an imperious gesture.

“So you don’t want to hear what I have to say? How can I change this restaurant around? You won’t even go with me to talk to Dad?” I drop my purse onto the table. The folder I so carefully prepared falls out and onto the floor.

“I don’t care about your research. Harper, you’re just like Mom. You want to do something so badly, it doesn’t matter if it’s a good idea or not.” Tony chugs his drink. “Be serious for once. Let this go. I’ve spent the last six months convincing Dad not to sell it to you. Now it’s your turn to run. Take your business degree and go settle down with that Navy guy, raise a couple of kids like mom did.”

My eyes dart from Tony to the Barista calling out more coffee names. Before I know it I’m out of my chair and moving backward. “Sorry,” I mutter to the occupant of the chair behind me, more out of reflex than for any other reason. Everything is so clear now. Tony spent the last year sabotaging me, and I never saw it coming. They’ll let Just Burgers die. I always suspected that Dad held Mom back. Since her death, Just Burgers seemed to go further and further downhill. How far could it have gone if they had supported her? Picking up my coffee I take another swig, tears of anger forming behind my eyes.

“You’re just like Dad. You both know everything, except you’re both so wrong.” My words rise considerably; heads swivel in our direction. “I’m glad I’m like Mom. She had her head on straight. Do you want to know something else? Neither you nor Dad came to my graduation because you couldn’t. You’re both chauvinists. It will never occur to either of you that you could have helped me, but no, you know all.” I air quote. “At least, I’m not afraid of failing. You took the boring route, Tony. Anyone can be an investment counselor. I’m going to do something with my life. And if I don’t, it won’t be because I didn’t try.”

“Now, Harper, stop being stupid. Just think about what I did for you. I saved your life. So go live it. Go get a receptionist job somewhere. Get a job that doesn’t taint your skin with the scent of burnt meat on a daily basis.” Tony shudders.

Stunned, all I can do is stare at him.

“Order up for Lisa, sugar-free caramel latte.”

“I’ll get it myself.” A woman a few seats away snaps at her date.

As if her words were a catalyst, my dream of red walls and Friesen horses appears as vivid as if I had just painted it. I don’t need Just Burgers. I can start my own restaurant! The anger I felt for Tony disappears. I can stand here and argue with him, but that’s what Tony wants. He wants to be the star of his one-sided play. Life as an investment counselor must really be boring if this is what he does for attention. Resolve builds inside me until my body feels as if it’s an oak tree, oozing with strength. I don’t need him; I never needed him. Tony wants me to fail. The only way to prove him wrong is to do this myself!

A Sneak Peek at The Sentinels

...excerpt not edited or finalized!

I heard the distant sound of thunder, or so I thought until it grew closer and I realized that it was the rumble of motorcycles coming our way. I expected them to ride on past us, but when they slowed and pulled up behind Pops’ truck I straightened nervously. They weren’t just weekend bikers, I could tell that immediately by the way they were dressed, and the air of danger they exuded. The six men belonged to an honest to goodness motorcycle club and their worn, leather cuts were decked out in colorful patches and name tags.
They looked serious and mean as hell. I had to add big and handsome to the description as I watched them climb off their large bikes and slowly approach us. I glanced at Pops, looking for a sign that he knew these bikers. Otherwise I was going back to my car to retrieve my baseball bat out of the back seat. He just smiled and gave me a wink.
What was I worried about anyway? We were on a busy public highway. I took a deep breath, smiled and said in my usual cheery tone, “Hi boys.”
I couldn’t tell what they were looking at, since they were all wearing dark sunglasses. The man who appeared to be the leader, the hunk wearing the president’s patch, came to a stop a couple of feet away from us. I began to feel self-conscious of my clinging wet clothes, especially when I could feel my nipples turn hard against my thin tee. I crossed my arms but the quirk of his lips told me that I hadn’t been fast enough.
Jerk!
“You picking up strays now, Pops?”
Ohmygod! The deep, gravelly tone of his voice was sexy as hell and did something quirky to my core. The man wasn’t too bad on the eyes either. He was taller than most, his sun tanned skin pulled taut over his super hot muscles. He oozed dominance and the clunky silver rings on his fingers said they were his backup.
“Bout damn time you got here,” Pops grumbled, pushing away from his truck. “And be nice to cutie, here, she stopped to help and fed me, too.”
“Cutie?”
Now I knew his eyes were full on me, and I could tell by the tilt of his head that he was looking me up and down. As if he had the right. I didn’t like his intimidation tactics, even if his presence was having an unexpected affect on my girlie parts. Something I’m sure he was used to. The devil in me promoted me to lower my arms and slap my hands on my curvy hips in a move that I knew was challenging. A big mistake I realized when his sexy mouth turned up at both corners.
“Looks like a drowned rat to me.” The bikers behind him laughed.
“Flattery will get you nowhere,” I responded, meeting what I thought was his eyes. I turned my attention back to Pops, putting my hand on his thin shoulder. “Now that your boy is here I’ll be on my way. It was nice meeting you.” I glanced back at the group of bikers. “Goodbye, boys.” I gave them a wave, eager to be on my way.
“Baby,” The sound of his growly voice stopped me in my tracks and I looked back at him. “You call me a boy again and I’ll be only too happy to show you the difference.”
