Painter, etcher and book illustrator. Studied drawing under Martinus Rørbye, later pupil of C. Købke and C.W. Eckersberg. In Paris he studied under Thomas Couture in 1852-1853. Known for his illustrations of nordic folklore, sagas and the fairytales of H.C. Andersen, as well as his children's books about his daughter Lily published in Danish, French, and English.
