Quoting Queen of Hearts

Chapter 3:
The Blacker The Berry/Mortal Man
Told by Darius Osiris Jefferson/Cyrus

Let me tell you about myself, my friends, and our business ventures.

When we were kids, we were all poor as hell. My dad worked two jobs, sometimes sixteen hours a day after my mom died. He moved us here to The View to take a job at the local chemical plant. I hardly saw him except to eat and sleep, and then it was right back to work.
Hakim and Lionel’s grandparents moved back here and raised them with very little money. But they did the best they could. Mr. Dunn was disabled from a bad injury from working years ago. Part of his leg was lost from faulty equipment when a press malfunctioned and crushed him underneath. He was lucky to still be alive when the machine flipped over on him. Grandma Sophie is a nurse. She’s been working at health clinics for over forty years.

When Hakim and I became friends, his grandparents accepted me as their own. They started keeping me while my dad worked. We really did grow up together. We would take these trips to different places during the summer when the Dunns’ grandparents were young enough to take us. Man, those were the best times. Those long car rides made us see that the bus was just a distraction.

To really see something, you had to have a car, money, and a destination. So, when we got home to The View, we all hit the streets running. Hakim, Lionel, and I wanted to see it all! We got maps of places we wanted to go, wrote lists of things we wanted to do, and found pictures of all the shit we wanted to own. Lionel used to make these scrapbooks from magazines, and they were dope.

Me? I wanted it all, everything that I couldn’t afford. I enjoyed the money, cars, clothes, and especially all the fine women. If love wasn’t an option, I was going to pull the finest women I could find. I had so many lists of shit I wanted; it was scary. I added more as my tastes evolved.

But not Hakim... No, Hakim wanted to change the world. At first, he had crazy ideas about growing the city and making his home more comfortable. All Hakim dreamed about was the ultimate comfort. He wanted the perfect house, to drive the most luxurious cars, and he wanted the perfect woman… My brother didn’t like girls…he wanted women! Hakim had the most exquisite taste.

He wanted to pay for his own education and everyone else’s. He chose to take his money and make more money. Hakim and our friend Kaliah are certified geniuses. They read books about everything, especially business and marketing. Hakim watched the news all the time, and his favorite shows that weren’t sportscasts were about finance and world news. He could quote numbers and guess changes almost perfectly. Hakim would call Kaliah, who was in college at UCLA. They bounced numbers off of each other every morning for months.

It freaked everyone out how he could sit in front of the TV and quote the numbers as they showed up on the screen. Mr. Dunn saw that shit, and when Hakim turned thirteen, he gave him some savings bonds that belonged to his deceased father. It was worth more than ten thousand dollars! That, along with some insurance money, got the ball rolling. Hakim and Kaliah turned that money into over two hundred thousand dollars in three months!

When I told my dad what Hakim had done, he gave Hakim every penny of our savings, and they flipped it. Kaliah was unbelievable! He’s a human calculator, and he could memorize anything once he read it or saw it. He started going to medical school at the age of sixteen and took a pharmacy job. Kaliah started telling us about medicinal marijuana co-ops, pharmacies, and dispensaries.

Kaliah had started growing for a farm and cross-breeding strains as well as developing seeds. All the while, he and Hakim were still flipping paper on the market! They had almost two million dollars in a year.
Soon the brokers started getting nosy because Granddaddy Dunn was too old. They wanted to know where he was getting his information. Hakim and Kaliah decided to pull all the money out of the market and move into the marijuana business.

Kaliah used his botany, chemistry, medicine, and business degrees to develop some crazy shit, and we wanted to use our money to back him. He was selling his plants to co-ops, and then inspiration hit. Kaliah and Hakim took their money, bought a farm, and grew in Kaliah’s hometown in Jamaica. I took my money and paid for development, distribution, and in the next year, we split five million dollars three ways! We kept buying more and more farms in different countries, and in states that allowed cultivation, we stayed on top of all the laws and bills being passed, so we knew our limits.

Kaliah invented more ingenious, specifically potent strains. Now we split about nine million a year…that’s net income. For an 18-year-old…that’s gross.
