Golden Boy
My golden boy
sings “Golden Boy”
to his golden-eyed, silken black boy
and i kind of wish i’d put my phone on video instead of photo
so you could hear it too
but it strikes me that
(much like the Mountain Goats’ song “Golden Boy”)
this singular moment in time
with my son
and his guitar
and his cat
is something to be enjoyed in its moment
rather than trying to preserve it forever.

Gal
[image error]
I started this 2020 project on my blog to see if I could post a photo from every day that was either beautiful or interesting, and write something really short about it. Today was a busy day and I didn’t think there was anything either particularly beautiful or interesting to snap a picture of. Then I remembered I have something in my house that is always both beautiful and interesting. So some days, it might just be a dog pic.

Fragments
Archeologists can
unearth fragments
shattered pieces of a 17th century jug
and somehow they know
(well, not “somehow” — they spend years studying this stuff)
what it would look like if it were assembled
and, more impressively
they can tell you it’s a Raeren stoneware jug
made in what is today Belgium
between 1580 and 1620.
Nobody can tell you
what it felt like to fill that jug
to carry its solid weight across a firelit room
to pour the ale you brew in your brew-house
from the lip of your Raeren stoneware jug
to put your feet up at the end of a long day
and drink.

Moonlit Morning
[image error]
It’s the thing everyone hates about winter. Getting up in the dark, going to work in the dark. And enough to freeze the face off ya this morning too, walking the dog in minus thirteen with a hard northeast wind making it feel like minus twenty-five. All that and it’s dark too, not to mention icy underfoot. But there’s this big gold moon, just half an hour before sunrise, a yellow disk of moon that my iPhone camera can’t do justice to, not with the dog pulling on the leash in the freezing wind with the ice under my boots. But still. I take the picture, because this one thing, this is beautiful.

New semester
New students
You’d think that 33 years after my first year teaching
it would have gotten old or boring, or at least less nervous, less fraught with possibility
but, not really.
It all starts tomorrow
Again.

Crumbs
[image error]
And she said
Lord, even the dogs may have the crumbs
that fall from the master’s table
or that fall from the counter when the master is making a sandwich
or just any crumbs at all really
crumbs are very very good.

Winterberries
[image error]
Dogberries buried under snow
are every bit as vivid red
as they are against the golden leaves of autumn.
Everything looks different
against a new background.

That’s it.
