20 Years on...
It's almost exactly 20 years since my first big short story sale to a pro anthology, the wonderful first NOVA SCOTIA from Mercat Books. As a result of that one I got to go to the launch and signing in Blackwells in Edinburgh ( again a first for me) and rub shoulders with the likes of Ken MacLeod and Charlie Stross who were also in the book.
That was a wee turning point for me. Before it I was mainly happy in the small presses, but after it I raised my sights higher and submitted mainly to the pro markets. I got more rejections than previously, but steadily managed to pick up more and more sales, and at pro rates too.
So it all stemmed for a comedy story way back then, TOTAL MENTAL QUALITY, BY THE WAY, where some Scottish bio-engineered A.I. is liberated from a lab, gets free, and decides to change the world's tastes in music, one Jimmy Shand record at a time...
