See our article in the November issue of Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities Magazine

Published in: DeCarley Trading PressHedging Futures with Long and Short Options

See Carley Garner articles and columns in Stocks & Commodities MagazineBeginning commodity traders tend to migrate to the practice of trading futures contracts as opposed to options due to their simplicity. After all, a futures trader has the ability to place a stop loss order, he can easily determine his profit and loss with absolute certainty based on incremental price movements, and he has nearly 24-hour liquid market access. However, there are some flaws in this thinking.

For starters, stop loss orders arguably cause more harm than good in some scenarios. If this statement is confusing to you, imagine being stopped out of a short e-mini S&P position on the evening of June 24th near 2119 only to watch the market crater seconds later by 120 points! Not only would the trader have likely taken a steep loss, but the emotional trauma of missing one of the best short trades of a lifetime wouldn’t have sat well with the trader either.

Another look at the crude oil futures market

Published in: DeCarley Perspective ArchivesThis newsletter was emailed to DeCarley Trading futures brokerage clients on October 6, 2016.

Is the WTI oil rally ready to bust, or is this the beginning of a boom?

OPEC’s pledge to trim output quickly changed the short-term landscape of the crude oil market but it probably didn’t solve the long-term supply problem and it certainly didn’t alter the seasonal tendency of the commodity. According to the last thirty years of data, Moore Research Center, Inc. (MRCI) has found that the price of oil (based on the December futures contract) tends to peak in mid-October. More specifically, the seasonal service claims a trader selling December crude oil on October 16th and buying it back on the 30th would have been profitable in 13 of the previous 15 years. While we understand each trading year is unique in its fundamental, political, and economic environment we also recognize that reoccurring patterns generally shouldn’t be scoffed at.

Fed Funds Futures aren't pricing in a December interest rate hike

Published in: DeCarley Perspective Archives

This was emailed to our futures brokerage clients on September 30th, 2016

The DeCarley Perspective Commodity Trading Recommendations

Sell December Fed Funds Futures

The Federal Reserve has made it relatively clear that they intend to raise interest rates in the December meeting. Also, there were three dissenting members in the last meeting which is a rare occurrence and generally points toward a committee inching toward taking action.

We've noticed the market isn't necessarily "buying" what the Fed is selling but we believe they will do exactly what they did in 2015; sneak in a holiday rate hike in an attempt to move toward normalization.
