An Interview With M/M Romance Author Kristian Parker

I was thrilled to get a chance to interview Kristian Parker who has thirteen titles to his credit. HIs most recent release Fool’s Gold came out just a few days ago. Kristian took time out of his busy schedule to talk about his work. I hope you enjoy hearing another perspective on the life of a romance writer. If you like what you read, please be sure to pick up one (or more) of his books.

What is it about writing that you enjoy the most?

At the risk of sounding odd, I’m always playing little scenarios around in my head. I’ve done it ever since I can remember. The physical act of writing is getting some of these scenarios out and onto the page. I love to create characters, then live inside them for a little while. One of my best friends can always tell if I haven’t written for a few days because I seem a bit more stressed than usual.

What drew you to writing gay romance?

I had the idea for many years ago. I wrote it and had a look around to see where I could publish it but it didn’t come to anything. For some reason, I didn’t discover the world of M/M romance publishing. So much for my highly honed research skills.

During one of the lockdowns, I saw a tweet from Pride Publishing asking for submissions. So, I polished To Light A Fire and sent it in. I was absolutely thrilled when it was accepted. The rest is history.

Now I’ve got more specific scenarios playing out in my head. I have truly been bitten by the M/M bug and have lots of ideas that I can’t wait to bring to the table.

Can you share something about your writing process?

About ten years ago, I got my M.A. in TV & Radio Scriptwriting. We were taught to plot and to build a story in layers. I use these techniques now. I have the utmost respect for discovery writers who have a beginning and an end set but let the story flow freely as they write. I’ve tried that and found it to be far too stressful.

Because of my day job, I’m used to juggling lots of different projects and I do the same with my writing. I have everything planned. That isn’t to say the process isn’t creative. Lots of ideas come to me when I’m first drafting or editing. I just make way for them. Plans can always be changed.

What is the part of the process that you find most challenging?

The blurb on the back of the book! I hate writing the blurb. Luckily my editor, Rebecca Fairfax, is pretty nifty in the blurb department. She is very patient and lets me have an attempt, then she waves her magic wand and behold, it is ten times better.

Maybe one day I’ll master this dark art.

How has your writing changed since you published your first story?

Hmmm that’s a difficult one. That would involve me re-reading my first story I wrote for a collection, called Venetian Valentine and I’m not sure I’m brave enough. I hope that I am getting better with each book I bring out. That is certainly the intention.

With my new series, Two Tribes, I have written one big story over the trilogy as well as each book being self-contained. That was a big challenge to me, and I hope I’ve pulled it off. Previously my series were standalones in the same world.

What is your favourite thing to do when you’re not writing?

Not writing? What do you mean?

Only joking. I love to do the usual things. Travel for one. After the pandemic, I don’t think I will ever take it for granted again. I went to Rome and Greece last year. It was amazing to be back in an airport.

I’m lucky to be blessed with wonderful friends and family so if I’ve spare time, I’ll be with some partner in crime or other. Probably in a pub to be fair.

What are you most excited about in future projects/work?

I’ve been a busy boy, so 2023 is going to see quite a few stories from me.

I’ve already released the second Queens Crescent book, Pole Position which is set in the glamourous world of Formula One racing.

March sees my other new series, Two Tribes, begin. The first book, Fool’s Gold is the story of Liam Moseley. He’s in his mid-twenties and trapped in Jonny Wellingham’s gang. They have ruled Manchester, England for years yet Liam doesn’t have the respect he craves. Then Marco Ponti comes into his life, triggering a chain of events that changes everyone’s lives.

The sequel, Everything Changes is out in April and the finale, Don’t Look Back In Anger in May.

May also sees us go back to Queens Crescent for Reality Royal. I’ll calm down then, I promise. Although expect a few more visits to Queens Crescent before the end of the year. I’m currently putting the finishing touches to them so I won’t say anymore.

What is the best way to find out more about you and your work?

To keep up to date with my comings and goings, you can find me in all the usual places:

The Life Cycle Of A Book … A Tale Of Three Novels

It’s been nine months since The Woodcarver’s Model came out. This is a time where the sales generated from marketing and promotion have tapered off, but other forms of sales take hold. Since the book has been on the market for some time, there is now a body of reviews and ratings that create credibility for the book. As a result, other groups start to take an interest in the novel, including book clubs and libraries.

As of this writing, The Woodcarver’s Model is now being carried in libraries in Canada from coast to coast and is slowly being discovered by American libraries. Book clubs are starting to enquire about autographed copies of books, and if they are local, they are interested in having me attend their book club meeting (which I am delighted to do).

The general window of ebb and flow for a single release is two years and then sales on the book may become reanimated if a new book is released (because readers want to find out what else the author has written), or a new version of the book comes out.

In my case, this August, my next novel will come out, and a matter of months later, the audio version of The Woodcarver’s Model will be released ensuring that there are always ways to keep fans interested.

So what about that next novel? What stage is it at right now?

Mann Hunt was signed to a contract at the end of 2022. The manuscript draft was reviewed not only by the publisher, but also the lead editor to ensure it met their needs, was well-written and held the promise for sales. In the case of Mann Hunt the book is part of a series, which means that by the end of 2023, I will be submitting the manuscript for the second novel in the series, and by the end of 2024, the final novel in the series will be in.

At present, the manuscript for the first novel is with the chief editor who is making notes and checking for errors, commenting on structure, looking for slips in point of view, and ensuring that it is clear who is speaking which line of dialogue. The process is a detailed one, and only the first of several steps of editing. At some point in the upcoming few months, the editor’s notes will come back to allow me to make the appropriate revisions. The cover art for the novel will also soon be coming my way with options to choose from and the opportunity to give feedback. A cover is important, as the right image can make a big difference in the level of interest in a book.

So while I await my edits on Mann Hunt, there is time for writing on the second book in the series. But there is another project that is also taking up some time.

Around the other writing, I have been working on a youth novel called Not Not Normal. I finished a draft close to the end of 2022, but I wanted to do a full revision on it before submitting it to the publisher. I am in the process of completing that revision (in the hopes that I can submit it for approval before the editor’s notes on Mann Hunt come back).

So the process of writing is a continuous one. And the cycle of getting a book out to the public ebbs and flows with each new release. And each time a new book is released, there are more opportunities to reanimate interest in previous novels.

To provide a sneak peek at the process, here’s the first chapter of the youth novel in its unedited form.

Chapter One

Jordan laid out two pads of paper, two pens, two pencils (sharpened), and one pink, one green and one blue highlighter. Glasses were set out for water—the meeting was going to be in Jordan’s bedroom and he only allowed water in there. It was 7:30 in the morning and Emma was due at nine to have a planning session for tomorrow’s events, tomorrow being the first day of grade eleven at Playter Heights Secondary School.

He looked at everything. Something wasn’t right. First, he straightened the pens. It still didn’t feel right, so he replaced the pencils with two that were the same length. Still not… It was the highlighters—“No! Stop it right now,” he whispered. That’s what he told himself when he was getting… fussy. Jordan quickly pushed everything out of order.

For a full minute he stared at the visual chaos, then, without thinking, straightened one pen, then another, then the pads of paper, until everything was as tidy as before. He sighed. Was he ever going to be normal? That’s all he ever wanted, ever dreamed of—to NOT be a freak.

The phone rang with a double chirp indicating a call from the intercom at the front door. Mr Swan, the daytime doorman, must have been away from his desk. He usually let Emma in without question.

Jordan buzzed her in and thought about when they had first met at Westford Middle School after he’d transferred there in grade seven. He had found himself being regularly bullied for being small, quiet and the new kid in the school. Jordan remembered cowering as he was surrounded by a taunting mass of grade eights, then the sound of a single, high-pitched yell followed by the screams of boys in the crowd. As Jordan had looked up to see what was making the sound, he’d seen a skinny girl with carrot-orange hair, grinning wildly. The braces on her teeth had gleamed in the sunlight, as she’d cut through the crowd on her inline skates, weaving in and out running into as many toes as she could. In that moment Jordan and Emma had become the closest of friends, and Emma had become his protector.

Within a few minutes there was a knock on the door and Emma let herself in.

“Good morning Mr Shepherd,” he heard her call out to his dad as she kicked off her shoes.

“Hello Emma,” his dad mumbled from the living room sofa where Jordan knew he would be sitting, staring at yesterday’s newspaper.

Emma greeted Jordan in the hallway that led to his bedroom. “Morning!” she said, giving him a hug.

She always hugged him, even though he shuddered when she did. He thought she did it on purpose. Jordan wasn’t a touchy-feely kind of person.

“Come on,” he said, prying himself away from her, then headed down the hall to his bedroom, a space where every wall was covered in neatly shelved books.

As they sat down on the bed, the carefully laid out meeting supplies shifted. The pens and pencils rolled out of place. Jordan immediately reorganized them, but they rolled away again. As he reached for them, Emma gently touched his hand. “Maybe we should sit on the floor.”

“Right.”

They moved off of the bed and Jordan got the pencils and pens all safely lined up, just the way he liked them.

“First off, this year we have to change the name of the group,” he said.

“And that’s important, why?” Emma asked.

“No one is going to sign up for a book club called Bookwormers. It sounds like a parasitic infection.”

“It’s a high school. No one is going to sign up for it no matter what it’s called.”

“The book club has members.” Jordan protested.

“Four of us. It’s not so much a club as an…accidental gathering.”

“And it won’t grow if we don’t have an exciting name.”

“What would make a book club exciting?” she asked.

“Latin,” he said, with confidence.

Emma thought for a minute. “You mean like Froy Gutierrez?”

“Who?”

“That hot Latino guy from Hocus Pocus 2.”

Jordan crossed his arms. “No. Not Latino. Latin. Like the language.”

“You are never gonna find a date if you think Latin is sexy.”

“I said exciting, not…sexy, and that’s why I propose we ask the school to rename it…X-Libris.” He held up a sign that he’d run off on his printer.

Emma said nothing. She just stared at him.

“It would be like a play on Ex Libris… You know, like on book plates.”

Emma looked lost.

Jordan grabbed one of his mother’s books off of the shelf and opened it to the inside cover. He showed her a printed sticker that read ‘Ex Libris Janice Franco’. “It means, roughly, ‘From the library of Janice Franco’. That was my mother’s name before she got married. I was thinking of changing the name of the club to X-Libris, like—formerly from the library. Like a book’s been liberated from one person’s private collection. We’ll be setting the words free and into the world!” Jordan felt excited.

Emma continued to stare at him.

“What? It’s pretty…dope!” he said.

“When you say that, it doesn’t sound right.”

“Okay. Cool then.”

“You, my adorably nerdy friend, have no idea what cool is, do you?”

“Well, X-Libris is better than Bookwormers! We might even get picked on less. And we may be able to expand our membership.”

“From four.”

“Who knows—by the end of the year we could have…five!”

“Well, I think you should make your case to the school librarian first thing tomorrow morning. Tell him just what you told me. I think you can convince him.”

Jordan said, “Maybe you could ask him?”

Emma stared at him. “No. Now, let’s get out of here. I’m taking you out for coffee. It’s our last day of freedom before school starts.”

Jordan hesitated.

Emma said, “You’ll be fine. And you’ll be fine tomorrow. Now come on, let’s go.”

If you want to become more involved in the journey of any of these books, there are several ways to participate and interact!

If you have a book club (especially if you are in Toronto) reach out and I will see if there are ways to make the experience more interactive for your members.

If you are interested in finding the book at your local library, make a request, which will allow members of the book club to access the work for free. Don’t know where to start? Reach out to me, and I will help you find the appropriate way to contact your local library.

And if you have read the book and enjoyed it, please take a moment to review the book. Reviews make a huge difference in how many libraries and book clubs take an interest in my work.

I look forward to sharing progress on all of these books, and next month I’m going to start profiling other authors. In March I’m excited to interview author Kristian Parker (who has 13 books to his credit). You can find out more about him by clicking here.

Until next time, thanks for reading, and I can’t wait to share more of my writing with you in the upcoming year.

Warmest Regards,

Peter E. Fenton

A New Year, A New Play, A Few New Novels

The month of January is nearly past, and it seemed an appropriate time to update you on the latest news connected to my writing. As you can tell from the above title, this year is going to bring about a few new things.

While this blog was started to talk about writing on my novels, I have long been a playwright, and that work continues. One of the companies that I have had a long affiliation with is Smile Theatre. This company brings professional theatre with full costumes, sets and, professional actors and stage management into seniors facilities. The company has been active for over 50 years, serving seniors who love theatre, but can no longer get out due to physical limitations.

My partner and I had been commissioned to write a new piece for the company in 2019, but the pandemic put a long pause on the process. This year we were able to get back into the rehearsal hall and workshop our new script for 3 days with an incredible trio of actors. The new show is called The Detective Disappears.

The photo above may make the work look fairly formal, but as you can see from the pictures below, the piece is filled with silliness and joy. The Detective Disappears tells the tale of Sherlock Holmes, Dr John Watson and Mrs Martha Hudson at a later stage in their lives. They now reside in 221A Baker Street (as the gents can’t easily make the stairs up to 221B anymore). On the day of Sherlock Holmes’ 76th birthday, he disappears, leaving Dr Watson and Mrs Hudson to solve the case. The show features a cast of zany characters, 9 original songs, and a lot of laughter.

This musical comedy explores how we cope when things that we are used to disappear from our lives, and also how relationships change with age. The plan is that Smile Theatre will tour the play in the fall of 2023. I’ll keep you posted.

In August of 2023, Pride Publishing will release my second novel titled Mann Hunt. This is the first book of the three part Declan Hunt Mysteries. I know I have mentioned this book before, but as the book gets closer to release, things are getting real. The cover art for the book is being created, the editor is working on the manuscript, and pre-marketing on the book is only a few months away. For those of you who are wondering, Mann Hunt WILL be available on Kindle Unlimited.

Here’s a brief description …

Declan Hunt is having a bad week. The kidnapping case he is working on is showing little progress, his office assistant has left him on short notice, and his latest investigation has left him literally battered and bruised. But things change when he hires twenty-four year old Charlie Watts to help out at the office. They form an unlikely partnership trying to solve two seemingly unrelated cases whose threads begin to weave together when the missing person case turns to murder.

The investigation takes them from the dark alleys, gay bars and bath houses of Calgary, to the richest parts of the city during the world-famous Calgary Stampede.

But will they be able to discover who the killer is before another life is lost? And will Declan be able to solve the mystery of his relationship with Charlie who is clearly attracted to him — especially since it is evident that the attraction is becoming mutual?

This book combines all of the elements of a traditional whodunnit with an evolving relationship at the core of the story and plot twists and turns that will keep you guessing. I’ll let you know when I’m allowed to release the cover of the book and share information on the official launch date.

***

My first novel The Woodcarver’s Model continues to be well received with reviews continuing to come in. Another sign that the novel is gaining wider acclaim is the fact that libraries across Canada are beginning to purchase the book and make it available for readers free of charge.

The Halifax Public Library system is the latest to stock the book thanks to a reader request.

THe Halifax Public Library now carries The Woodcarve’rs Model

Access to the book through libraries is important to an author for a few reasons. First of all, it provides access to the work for those that don’t have the means to purchase a copy. But it also boosts the credibility of the novel. There is also a royalty program in Canada for authors whose books are loaned through libraries. The more libraries that carry the book, the more access people will have to it, and I see a small royalty at the end of each year.

If you want to find out how to encourage your local library to order a copy, put a note in the comments. Requests must be made locally and you must have a library card. So far the book is available through the library system in Edmonton, Toronto and Halifax. I’d love to see the book go further, so do drop a line if you want to find out how to get the book in your local library.

***

While the writing is finished (well, except for some editing) for The Detective Disappears and Mann Hunt, 2023 will involve writing on two new projects.

The first is a youth novel called Not Not Normal, which has a full draft, but I am revising it prior to submitting it to the publisher. This project took shape last year, after the acquisitions editor for a Canadian publisher saw The Woodcarver’s Model and got in touch to see if I would be interested in writing a shorter novel for their company.

The project got stalled last year as I did a complete rewrite on Mann Hunt, and got the script ready for The Detective Disappears. I am now focusing my energys on this project and in the upcoming weeks, I plan to finish my revisions and get it to the publisher by the end of February.

After that … it is time to work on the second book in the detective series. While the titles are VERY fluid right now, you are the VERY FIRST to hear that the working title for the second book in the series is …

The novel will continue to follow Declan Hunt as he deals with the death of a romance writer in Drumheller, Alberta. His relationship with his partner Charlie Watts will continue to evolve in this taut thriller. I have a rough shape for the novel, characters, locations and scenes sketched out. And I will start to work in earnest on the piece as soon as Not Not Normal is submitted. Immoral Hunt should be released early in 2024 depending on how the writing goes and of course, the editing process and the desired release date of the publisher.

***

All work and no play leads to fatigue and a lack of inspiration, so I will continue to write, but Scott and I hope to take a trip to Greece in the spring. We will blog about our travel adventures on our travel blog at Fenton & White. If you have any hot tips on the best places to go, feel free to leave those in the comments.

Thanks for reading, and I hope that wherever you are, that books give you joy and bring you comfort and allow your imagination to fly.

Until Next Time,

Peter E. Fenton

OTHER AUTHORS WITH MY PUBLISHER THAT ARE NOMINATED

Gin Vane’s book From Bad To Worse is also carried by my publisher and has been nominated in the Best Law Enforcement category of the Goodreads M/M Romance Awards. Check it out, and maybe give it a vote if you are on Goodreads.

Here’s the author’s description of the book.

Colt Harkan’s not much of laughing man, or he might more appreciate the biggest joke of his life. Fresh from his time undercover, his first day at Mason PD finds him partnered with Everett Kane—a man determined to stumble through life and still come up the golden boy.

He makes it all look so easy, talking to people with his sun-bright smile. Everett just…cares. It’s like the man can’t help it.

But even in Mason, Colt sees darkness at the fringes, and catching that State Rodeo case starts two unexpected obsessions: proving Patrick Combs was a murder, and screwing around with Ev in the backseat of their car. Seems to work out fine for them both, when Ev isn’t busy with his women or his wife.

One of these days, Everett’s gonna find the rock bottom he’s digging for, and Colt can’t help but push him along. Because the bosses won’t admit it, but Combs was murdered, and that bigshot Richard Edwards knows something for sure.

Ev would say it makes him a pessimist, but Colt just has that feeling, an ice-sharp truth learned in days spent dodging death. Gettin’ honest words from Edwards and Everett both? Might be what kills Colt yet.

I’ll let you know in January if any of the nominations led to a win. Until then, may you have a wonderful holiday season.

Happy Holidays

The holidays are one of my favourite times of year. I love the food, the parties and the chance to reflect on the year past and set goals for the year ahead. 2022 has been a very good year for my debut novel, The Woodcarver’s Model and I look forward to sharing my new novel Mann Hunt with readers in 2023.

But first some exciting news about award nominations, the winner of the signed poster and autographed book, and information on a holiday sale on the novel. For those in Calgary, I’ve added information on where you can pick up an autographed physical copy of the book … and as a bonus … a recipe for the delicious treats at the top of the newsletter.

The Woodcarver’s Model Is A Reader’s Choice Nominee

The Woodcarver’s Model was nominated in the Goodreads M/M Romance Member’s Choice Awards in four categories including; Best Book of the Year, Best Contemporary, Best Hurt/Comfort and Best Performance/Visual Arts. The voting will begin in December. I was thrilled to be included among some incredible nominees. A special thanks to all those that nominated the book and have read it this year.

ONE LUCKY READER WON A PRIZE

Everyone who signed up for the newsletter or joined my Instagram page during the month of November was entered into a draw for an autographed poster and a signed copy of the book. I listed all of the names in order, put a number in front of each one and then had my partner randomly select a number. I am pleased to say that the winner is Anne Cunningham. Congratulations. I will be in touch with you to arrange shipping for the poster and book.

HOLIDAY SALE

For those looking for a wonderful digital stocking stuffer, why not give the chance to curl up with The Woodcarver’s Model on a chilly winter evening? The Kindle version of the book will be on sale from December 1-21st for only $1.99 ($2.34 in Canada). It’s unbeatable value that will give hours of enjoyment and put a smile on the face of the reader on your holiday shopping list. To access the sale, click here for Amazon and other digital retailers or buy direct from the publisher by clicking here.

SHOP AT YOUR LOCAL INDIE BOOK STORE

If you prefer to give a physical book as a gift, Toronto is out of stock, but there are still a few signed copies available at Shelf Life Books in Calgary. Simply click on the name to find their address information.

This recipe has three simple ingredients and has a nice salty and sweet flavour, plus it adds festive colour to any candy bowl or sweets tray! All you need is some green and red M & M’s, some square pretzels, and some Hershey Chocolate Hugs.

1Preheat oven to 250F degrees.2Line baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Align pretzels on the sheet. Unwrap Hugs and place one on each pretzel. Stick in the oven until the hug begins to melt down (about 4 minutes; it depends on your oven).3While the Hugs are melting in the oven, get your M&M’s ready because you will have to move quickly once they are out of the oven.4Remove pretzel hugs from oven and gently press an M&M down on each one. The Hug should flatten out when you press the M&M on it. If it is not flattening out, place the pretzel hugs back in the oven for 30 more seconds.5Let the pretzel hugs cool completely and let the chocolate set for about 10 minutes in the refrigerator. Enjoy!

From our household to yours, I hope that whatever your holidays hold that they are filled with good food, good friends and the chance to curl up with a good book.

Warmest Regards

Peter E. Fenton

MANN HUNT

IS NOW WITH THE PUBLISHER

Mann Hunt is my latest book, and after substantial revisions, it is now with the publisher. Watch this newsletter for information as the piece goes through editing, gets its new cover and moves towards release dates in the spring. This novel follows gay detective Declan Hunt as he tries to unravel a murder case, along with his new assistant Charlie Watts. The novel is filled with twists and turns, humour, mystery and lots of fascinating characters.

NOT, NOT NORMAL IS IN REVISIONS

My latest project is a youth novella dealing with loss, the things we do to take control of our lives, and how a single individual can shake us out of those patterns and get us back to life. The novella has gone through a full first draft and is in revisions before submission. I won’t say much more at the present, but it is exciting to be delving into fiction for young audiences.

Happy Thanksgiving

If you are in Canada and reading this note, I wish you a fantastic long weekend.

I think of Thanksgiving as just that, a time to reflect on the past year and give thanks for the many good things in my life.

I am so thankful that I have a first novel out in the world, that a second novel has just been sent to the publisher, and that a third novel is over half-way done.

I am thankful for the support of readers like you, who continue to read my stories.

And I am thankful for friends and family who encourage me to keep writing.

May your long weekend be filled with reasons for thanks.

And as a small thank you to YOU, if you click the link below, you can open up a jigsaw puzzle of the above image.

Free Nibbles, A Reading & A Book Signing

Come and join author Peter E. Fenton for a reading from his novel The Woodcarver’s Model as well as an excerpt from his new book MANN HUNT.

The afternoon will include a chance to get your book signed if you wish, some free nibbles and mostly an opportunity to celebrate the launch of Peter’s first published novel.

It all takes place on Sunday October 16th (the week AFTER Thanksgiving). Even if you don’t have a book or plan to purchase one, come and celebrate.

IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND, PLEASE RSVP to peterefenton@gmail.com by October 10th. It will help us plan food amounts.

Peter E. Fenton Author Event

Sunday October 16th from 2-4 PM

Madison Pub – 14 Madison Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (at the Spadina Subway Station)

I am thrilled to announce that The Woodcarver’s Model is now available in the Toronto Public Library system. Access to the work is important for those who don’t have means to purchase a book. If you have a Toronto Public Library card, you can now get an e-copy of the book by clicking here.

There is currently only one copy available, and the demand is high, but if the waiting list gets long, it may lead to additional copies being purchased by the library.

On a final note, for those of you who have enjoyed my other blog with my partner which shares Larry & Curly’s antics over the years, the meerkats will be attending this event. The meerkats are happy to pose for pictures or simply say hello. Another reason to come out and celebrate.

Whatever your day holds, we hope that it is filled with joy, laughter, and celebration.

Warmest Regards,

Peter E. Fenton
