Winter is receding and 2024 is shaping up to be a busy year as I continue along the path to releasing two books and getting a musical out on tour. This month is all about process. So first, let me update you on Hoodoo House coming out this summer.
Right now while the book is going through editing, the other focus is the cover art. I work with the publisher and the artist by providing a description of the overall image I have in mind, and then offer photos of people who can act as a reference for the look of the character I want featured. Some authors use vision boards before they write, but I like to let my characters create themselves in my mind’s eye and then find similar images after I have written the novel. Charlie Watts was introduced in the first novel, so I’ve gotten to know the character quite well. When I went searching for someone to compare Charlie Watts with, Gavin Caselegno came to mind.
So what will the ultimate book cover look like? I can tell you that the house in the title will be prominently featured, that Charlie will be the star of this cover (while Declan Hunt was the prominent figure on the cover of Mann Hunt), and that in the window, there will an image of two of the characters that reside in Hoodoo House. Or that’s the plan. I should be able to reveal the actual cover by the end of March.
The only other thing I will reveal, is the catch phrase for the book.
How far would you be willing to go to keep a secret?
And that may be a question I’ll ask of fans, as this book has a mystery that slowly unravels, with an explosive ending with surprise twists and turns. But will readers reveal the big secrets at the end, or will they keep them to themselves and have others read to find out what really happened? All will be revealed when the next installment of The Declan Hunt Mysteries comes out on June 25th.

My youth novel Not Not Normal is going through a much different process. The book has been in revisions with Lorimer Publishing for the past six months with various staff readers providing response to the material to allow the book to be as realistic as possible. The central character Jordan Shepherd is shy, troubled by the loss of a parent, suffering from panic attacks at school and struggling to find his place in the world.
While the novel is only 27,000 words, it packs an emotional wallop as we see Jordan’s year of change unfold. It is a story about finding someone who accepts you for who you are who gives you the strength to become the person you’ve always wanted to be. It is a book filled with hope, humour and most importantly, love.
The image above is a fair representation of the stage Jordan is at in his life. What will the cover look like? In this case, the publisher takes the lead and often the front of the novels are more stylized drawn images. All will be revealed in the upcoming months as the book goes through copy editing and marketing, and I look forward to sharing more about the novel as it comes closer to publication in the fall of 2024.

The Detective Disappears, a new one hour musical goes into rehearsal next week. The show follows Dr Watson and Mrs Hudson as they try and solve the case of when Sherlock Holmes goes missing. My partner Scott has been working on lead sheets and orchestrations, and the show will start performances on March 7th and tour for five weeks with Smile Theatre. This company takes professional equity productions to seniors facilities bringing new Canadian theatre to those who still love a show, but can’t get out to see it anymore. Check out the fabulous work Smile Theatre does by clicking here.

2025 may seem like a long ways away, but I am already booked for some conference appearances including the Love & Romance Conference in Toronto. By then, it is possible that my 5th book (the final episode in The Declan Hunt Mysteries) may be available for signing. I’ll keep you posted.

All work and no play limits creativity. After a busy winter, it will be time for a spring break. Scott and I have arranged for a holiday that will take us to California, along the coast by train to Seattle, with stops along the way in Vancouver and Calgary before returning home. In next month’s newsletter, I’ll hopefully be able to post a bit about the cover for Hoodoo House and perhaps even a quick peek at production stills from the musical.
In the meantime, thanks for reading, and I look forward to sharing more about this year’s novels in upcoming newsletters.

If you peeked into my writing room over the last six weeks you would have seen a lot of index cards and post-it notes as I dug deep into revisions on my latest novel. Writing the second installment of The Declan Hunt Mysteries has taught me a great deal about the challenges of writing a series. I struggled with choices connected to how much I would reference of the first novel in the second book. I pondered how to integrate plot points that will show up in the third book of the series, and still make them integral to the plot of the second book. And I kept wanting to tell more story, but when does the story become too much for one novel? All of these are questions I have been asking for the past month as I took Hoodoo House from a 100 000 word draft down to a novel that is now around 57 000 words.
*****

*****
So where did those other 42 619 words go? Some of them will show up in the newsletter as deleted scenes closer to the launch of the book. Some of them will appear as chapters in the next book. And some of them … well, too many sub-plots make for too complex a book and I simply had to cut them and acknowledge that they were part of the process of getting to the ultimate story.
Some people plot everything methodically, but in the case of Hoodoo House, I let the characters tell me where they wanted the story to go. As a result this novel took several twists and turns that I never would have imagined possible. I think the end result is quite exciting. The book is now with the editor, where it will go through a three-stage process. Pride Publishing is planning on releasing the book June 25th of this year.

A huge thanks to the Small But Mighty M/M Romance group for hosting me as an author at their #ownvoices party this past weekend. While the novels are with the publisher being edited, the spring will be spent in rehearsals for a new musical that will tour for 5 weeks. I co-wrote the book on the above show with my partner Scott White and we look forward to diving in with a talented trio of actors to get this musical comedy up on the boards.

2024 will not only include the release of two novels (more on my youth novel Not Not Normal in a future newsletter), but will also include some conferences. I am delighted to be one of the authors attending the Northern Rainbow Romance Retreat from October 6th-8th, and even more thrilled that it is happening in Toronto. I am still working on a date for a signing in Toronto for Mann Hunt, and of course, 2024 will also be spent writing the third and final installment of The Declan Hunt Mysteries. It doesn’t have a title yet, but I can say that the mystery will happen in the Rocky Mountains outside of Calgary, and that Declan and Charlie’s relationship will be put to the test like never before.

Thanks for reading, and to those who have just joined, thanks for signing up to get all the latest news. I look forward to updating you with more exciting developments on the work this year.

The sequel to Mann Hunt is coming soon. The first draft of the novel was over 100 000 words in length, but I’m paring it down to something a little sleeker. The manuscript will be going to the editing wizards at Pride Publishing at the end of the month, and has a planned release date of June 25th. Stay tuned for news on the book in upcoming newsletters.

Revisions continued for the publisher on my youth novella Not Not Normal. The book is slated for release in the fall of 2024. As you can see by the word count above, this is a smaller book, but I assure you it packs a powerful emotional punch. It is a story that deals with themes of overcoming loss, dealing with anxiety, and finding self-acceptance. I am so proud of this novel and can’t wait to share it with you.

Peter E. Fenton November Newsletter … All About The GRL!

*****
On October 17th my partner Scott and I trundled our suitcases to the airport and headed down to Portsmouth, Virginia for the annual Gay Romance Lit Retreat. While there may be bigger conferences connected to romance writing, this is the largest conference in North America focusing on gay romance literature. The event was attended by 125 authors from around the world and had 400 attendees who are passionate about gay romance.
*****

*****
I arrived at the conference early in the afternoon and was greeted by an amazing team that provided my author badge, a tote-bag sponsored by Macy Blake, the official GRL program and a host of treats to nibble on while attending the five days of panels, author meet-ups and book signings.
*****

*****
Our room was on the 16th floor with a fantastic view of the harbour. Portsmouth is one of the hubs for the Atlantic Coast Guard and is situated across the river from Norfolk which is a major port for the U.S. Navy, including a dry dock where they repair huge ships.
*****

*****
We spent the afternoon settling in and preparing some of the 150 swag bags that we would give away. Each package contained a Canadian chocolate bar, a Canada pin, a Peter E. Fenton pen, a sticker, as well as three postcards that each had a special promotion on them for the GRL retreat. The top facing card was a promotion from Pride Publishing that offered a chance to win one of five free e-copies of Mann Hunt if you scanned the QR code on the back. A second postcard had a QR code that you could scan to get a FREE e-copy of The Woodcarver’s Model. But it was the third postcard that we hoped would be the most tantalizing.
*****

*****
During GRL, people were encouraged to scan the mystery QR code on the back of the question mark postcard. Everyone who scanned the code was entered for a random draw. The prize? The chance to have their name as a character in Hoodoo House, the second book in the Declan Hunt Mysteries series. The book will be coming out June 25th. I am thrilled to say that the winner was Kaci Bowen. Kaci will be featured as an important character in this upcoming mystery. Stay tuned for details.
*****

*****
Most days we attended author panels, or met up with other authors and readers to discuss gay romance. I met authors from around the world and made lots of new friends. But it wasn’t all work. Scott and I managed to sneak away for an afternoon. We took the $2 ferry across the river to Norfolk and walked to the Chrysler Museum of Art which had a stunning collection of glasswork in the Tiffany Gallery and an array of unique pieces of fine art. And best of all, the museum was FREE.
*****

*****
My author lounge was on the Friday afternoon of the conference, and I spent the entire 45 minutes signing autographs and meeting readers, while Scott handed out swag bags.
*****

*****
Saturday was a bigger event, with half of the authors doing a signing session in the morning, and half of the authors doing a signing session in the afternoon. This is the room just prior to the doors opening. We ran out of swag and I signed books until my hand was stiff. It was a rewarding day.

I was proud to be one of three Canadian authors at the conference and we met so many amazing people. If you want more information on GRL and next year’s event click here.

While The Woodcarver’s Model and Mann Hunt continue to find new readers, I am in the writing room working on Hoodoo House, the second in the three part Declan Hunt Mysteries series. The manuscript will go to the editors by the end of the year. I’m doing final tweaks right now. Here’s the book description.
How far would you be willing to go to keep a secret?
When writer Malcolm Tulle is discovered dead at his writing desk, all signs point to suicide. But Malcolm’s publisher isn’t so sure. There’s the matter of the man’s missing computer, a mislaid manuscript, and the fact that he wasn’t necessarily the type to take his own life.
Declan Hunt and Charlie Watts are called into action once more. As the investigation moves out to The Badlands of Alberta, suspects begin to mount including a nervous editor, the author’s gay tricks, a mysterious housekeeper who takes care of a young boy, and an outside threat that keeps trying to break into Hoodoo House – a place filled with secrets.
Charlie and Declan follow the twists and turns of the case as they find themselves drawn closer to each other. Before this investigation is over, they’re going to have to decide if it is murder or suicide, and along the way determine if their partnership will extend beyond solving cases and into their personal lives.
Hoodoo House will be released on June 25th of 2024. You’ll be the very first to see the new cover for the novel, get access to exclusive excerpts and other tips and secrets about the book.

My youth novel Not Not Normal being published by James Lorimer & Company Ltd. Publishers is now going to be a fall 2024 release. The book is in the editing phase, and the publisher wants to give more time to promote the book and put it in the peak period for school release in September. Watch my newsletter for more information on this heart-warming story. I am REALLY proud of the work in this novel, and I think it will make you laugh and cry.

It is important to me that my books are as widely accessible as possible. Library access to the books means that those with limited financial means can access my novels for free. I am thrilled to report that libraries across the country have started picking up digital copies of both books. The Toronto Public Library system has three copies of The Woodcarver’s Model (with a waiting list to read the book), and Mann Hunt through Kindle Unlimited has 55 copies digital copies. If you are in another major Canadian city and have a public library card, you can recommend the book to the library and then they will consider it for their catalogue. If you live in one of the Canadian cities below, click on the name to see if you can access the book yet. If not, you can put in a request. And if you don’t see your city listed, simply check in with your local library and they will tell you how to make a recommendation. Finally, it wouldn’t be Halloween without a spooky recommendation for a book by another fabulous romance author. I can HIGHLY recommend the Darke Paranormal Investigations series by Rosanna Leo. The second book in the series Darke Music came out this past May and is PERFECT Halloween reading. And best of all, it’s set in Canada. Here’s the description.
*****
Historian Susannah Darke is no stranger to haunted houses. As one of a trio of ghost-hunting sisters, she’s had plenty of experience investigating the paranormal. When an opportunity arises to explore a haunted opera school in Toronto, she jumps at the chance, even though she once had her own frightening brush with its resident ghosts.
Noah Bellamy is the dean of the Asch Institute of Opera, and a former opera singer himself. He was once a student at the Asch and is well-acquainted with its boisterous spirits. But when the activity worsens, threatening one of his star students, he knows he has to take action.
The fact that Susannah and Noah have been hooking up for the past year complicates things, but they agreed long ago to keep things casual. As long as they both remember their boundaries, the investigation should go smoothly.
When the paranormal activity begins to target them personally, it becomes harder not to seek comfort in each other’s arms. For the first time ever, Susannah and Noah have to decide if it’s worth taking a chance on love.
The ghosts present a huge challenge, but battling their personal demons may be even harder.

Mann Hunt by Peter E. Fenton Has Critics And Readers Buzzing

*****
On September 2nd, Mann Hunt hit #50 on Kindle Unlimited in Australia for Gay Romance Books. In the U.K. it reached #76 in LGBTQ+ Romance eBooks, and in Canada it got as high as #108 in Romance eBooks. In the U.S. (which is the largest market) it went up to spot #321 for Gay Romance. Thanks to all of the readers and reviewers who are putting the book higher in the rankings which will (hopefully) make those that look up the book more aware that it is this summer’s MUST READ.

A large part of getting the word out to readers is blogs that cover a new book. I work with Katie Phoenix, an amazing publicist with Gay Romance Reviews. Aside from handling distribution of advance reader copies to blogs and social media accounts, she also puts together an amazing press kit. As this newsletter goes out to you now, the book is doing a “tour” of blogs over the next two weeks which will result in more reviews and articles about the book. Thanks to her work, editorial reviews such as the ones below have already come in. If you are considering writing or promoting a gay romance book, I can highly recommend GRR.

“Mystery, Suspense, murder, and romance … I’m in love!” – MM Romance Reviewed
“It’s definitely going to be a series that keeps you wanting to come back more. This is a definite recommendation from me; I can’t wait for more stories from this great pairing.” – Bayou Book Junkie
“Mann Hunt is a fast-paced whodunit with solid writing.” -Joyfully Jay LBGTQ Romance Reviews and More
Peter’s second book, and the first in his new mystery trilogy, is exceptional. His voice is unique. He writes from a Multi-person point of view, which is unique in the romance genre. It’s a super interesting way to move the story forward and works especially well for a mystery story. -Not Guilty Of Books

Of course none of this would be possible without the team at Pride Publishing that arranges for the cover art (done by Erin Dameron-Hill), the editing (done by Anna Olson and two additional line editors), the formatting done by Claire Siemaszkiewicz, the distribution by Rebecca Scott and additional promotion by Lori Blantin. Thanks to their work the book is listed on sites that include Amazon and Goodreads which leads to ratings and reviews. As of today’s post there are now 97 ratings and 84 text reviews on Goodreads with an average approval rating of 4.13 out of 5. If you’ve read the book and want to join in on the conversation by reviewing on Goodreads click here, or review on Amazon by clicking here.
And of course there is my own “personal” team. My partner Scott spends close to twenty hours a week doing social media, researching content for my newsletters, helping me order swag … I am lucky to have someone who believes in my work and supports it, and this wouldn’t be possible without his hard work.
