Publisher Pro Se Productions has shared a press release talking about an upcoming project that I am involved with called The Pro Se Single Shot signature line, which will feature assorted ebooks written by me (and others). The stories by me will be released under the From The Pen of Bobby Nash banner.

Keep watching this space and Pro Se's blog for more details and release dates as they become available.

For Immediate Release:

PRO SE PRODUCTIONS TAKES SHORT FICTION TO THE NEXT LEVEL

A leading independent publisher of Genre Fiction, Pro Se Productions announces an innovative new Fiction line today.

In 2010, Pro Se Productions debuted as a small press focused on ‘Puttin’ The Monthly Back into Pulp!’ The company originally produced a line of three magazines that featured ‘New Pulp’ short stories, that is stories written by modern writers very much in the style and feel of tales featured in classic Pulp magazines in the early 20th Century. When Pro Se made the move into publishing novels and short story anthologies, it closed the magazine line, only to restart the concept as a single magazine title due to popular demand. PRO SE PRESENTS grew into an award winning magazine that ran for 20 issues, its final installment released in February 2014. With the end of the magazine, Pro Se Productions closes one era to enter another, one that readers got a taste of in December of 2013.

“We are always,” says Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor-in-Chief of Pro Se, “focused on producing the very best in New Pulp and Genre Fiction in all aspects, including the format which we present it in. It’s no secret that Publishing in the last five years, particularly for independent presses such as Pro Se, has moved more and more into the digital realm. Not only can readers carry more books around on their Ereaders or their phones, but the price point is tremendously better in most cases over print books. Digital publishing also affords writers and publishers to produce any size work they wish, including single short stories that can be offered for less than a dollar each. Pro Se Productions decided to dip its foot in that pool and in December we held a grand opening of sorts for our new imprint- Pro Se Single Shots.

“The success we had,” continues Hancock, “with the first volley of Single Shots was quite amazing. No one’s getting rich on them, but the interest readers showed in being able to drop 99 cents and get a good, solid short story that they could read in a single sitting was staggering to us right out of the gate. This combined with the fact that our second magazine line had run its course we felt in its current format, gave us a few ideas. Chief among them was the fact that we could take each story that would have appeared in a PRO SE PRESENTS and offer it individually to readers in a digital format. That way a mystery fan could pick up the mystery stories he or she wanted for a reasonable price without having to feel like they were buying other stories they may not enjoy. But an even more intriguing idea presented itself rather quickly.

“The concept of digital singles affords Pro Se the ability to really bring the concept of Pulp storytelling and even, in a indirect way, the idea of recurring tales from a consistent stable of authors on a regular schedule –much like classic Pulps did- into the 21st Century. This kernel of an idea took root with us rather quickly and brings us now to possibly the most exciting announcement Pro Se has made in a long time. Pro Se Single Shot Signatures.”

The Pro Se Single Shot Signature line brings together 38 writers from across the spectrum of Genre Fiction. Each of these authors will be producing either an original series of his/her creation featuring recurring characters and concepts or writing an imprint of individual stand alone stories entitled ‘From The Pen of…’ and the author’s name. Multiple genres are represented, from jungle tales to horror stories to some that defy description.

Regardless if an author is doing a series or imprint, they will all be working on a regular production schedule established based on their own ability to produce quality work. Some will produce stories on a bi weekly, monthly, bi monthly, quarterly, or bi annual schedule. Each story will range in length from 3,000 to 15,000 words. Also, debuts of the individual series and/or imprints will be spread out over the remaining months of 2014, with at least three titles debuting in April.

Pro Se Productions proudly announces the inaugural cast of authors in the Pro Se Single Shot Signatures line. They include:
David Foster
PJ Lozito
Russ Anderson
Sean Taylor
Teel James Glenn
Fuller Bumpers
Tommy Hancock
Morgan Minor
Mark Bousquet
Philip Athans
Jim Beard
I. A. Watson
Joshua Reynolds
Bobby Nash

J. Walt Layne
Nikki Nelson-Hicks

David White

Each Pro Se Single Shot Signature Series and Imprint will feature cover art by Artist Jeffrey Hayes.

If the author of a series or imprint chooses to, print collections of his or her stories will be produced at later dates as agreed upon by Pro Se and the individual creator. Hancock also stated that Pro Se will continue to produce stand alone Single Shots as they did in December and again in March.

“The Signature line,” Hancock says, “is a very exciting prospect for Pro Se, the authors and artist involved, and the readers I believe. It puts these fantastic New Pulp tales in a quick, easy to digest format, makes them inexpensive, and opens readers up to a whole host of ideas and authors that they may never have been exposed to otherwise for whatever reason. It may not be the same feel as having a paper magazine to fold up in your hand, but the Pro Se Single Shot Signatures line definitely makes Puttin’ The Monthly Back into Pulp something Pro Se can do in a big way.”

In coming days, news concerning the individual authors and the series and/or imprints they are working on as well as production schedules will be released from Pro Se Productions.

For More information on Pro Se Single Shot Signatures, to be placed on a review list for upcoming releases, or for interviews with the authors involved, please contact Morgan Minor, Director of Corporate Operations for Pro Se, at directorofcorporateoperations@prose-press.com.

WHEN CAPTAIN AMERICA THROWS HIS MIGHTY S.H.I.E.L.D.

I've been recruited.I ventured out to the local theater for a viewing of the new Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie today. No spoilers, but I think I have a new favorite Marvel movie. It was great. I will say I'm really excited to see how the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series follows it up this week. The only downside to my movie-going experience was the two teenage girls in the row behind me that talked throughout the entire movie. Ah, well.

This movie is highly recommended. You should check it out.
I may just have to go see it again.

1 of my favorite covers.
Art by Mike ZeckI am a big fan of Captain America and and read the comic book for many years (okay, decades). I dropped off with the newest series that had Cap off in another dimension. It just wasn't working for me.

One of my hopes as a writer is to write a Captain America story some day. He's definitely on the short list of characters I would love to tackle. It'll probably never happen, but you never know. If there's one thing I have learned from reading and watching Cap's adventures over the years it's that anything is possible.

The Earth station One podcast will be reviewing Captain America: The Winter Soldier this week so I will go into more depth with spoilers there. Will post the link to that here on this site when it goes live.

Have a great weekend, shield-slingers.

Bobby

Another great poster image Nice teaser poster. Just because. I wonder how the events of the movie will effect these guys?

APRIL REVIEWS...

I really wanted to tie in the whole April Showers Bring May Flowers into the title, but nothing I tried really worked all that well. Darn it. I received a couple of reviews for a couple of my books in the past couple days (Snow Falls and Fight Card: Barefoot Bones) and wanted to share.

Andrew Salmon, an amazingly talented writer himself, reviewed my Fight Card: Barefoot Bones novel. You can read it here.

Michael Monson, also a writer, reviewed my ebook novel, Snow Falls. You can read it here.

Thanks for the reviews, gents. They are greatly appreciated.

As writers, we love seeing reviews. Not only is it a bit of feedback, which is nice to receive every now and again, but reviews at places like Amazon, Goodreads, Barnes and Noble, and the like help by knocking the books up the rankings so they gain a bit of extra visibility which makes them easier to see when potential readers are just browsing.

When you read a book, do the author a favor and drop a line or two review on-line. It will mean the world to them. Reviews are especially helpful to authors because every book sold helps.

Thanks and Happy Reading.

Bobby

SOMETIMES I GET ASKED STUFF… PART 18

One of the perks of being a writer is getting to meet some of the most interesting people. Whether it is at conventions, store signings, through the Earth Station One podcast, writer’s groups, on social media, and sometimes just from people I run into on when I venture out of the cave I call my office, and they have questions. Sometimes they are about writing or what I’m working on. Other times they’re out of left field. I thought it would be interesting to share some of them along with a few answers. Regardless of where they come from, here’s a few of the latest.

Check out past installments of Sometimes I Get Asked Stuff... here.

Q: What program do you write your first drafts in? Why?

I use Microsoft WORD. It’s an older version. It’s what I have so it’s what I use.

Q: You're in line at the grocery store and the answer to your writing conundrum leaps into your head in vivid color and detail. Will it make it to your manuscript? How do you capture ideas when you are away from the keyboard?

I’m very fortunate that I can generally remember these things later, or at least until I’m back in the car where I can jot it down on my phone and email it to myself.

Q: What is your stance on adverbs?

Sometimes they are needed, other times not so much. I play it by ear and if I go overboard, hopefully, the editor will rein me in.

Q: Writers: if you've created a private eye, tough guy/gal or spy, why not tell us a little about your characters?

I have a character named Abraham Snow who will headline a series of ebook novellas (paperback collection to follow later). Snow is a former undercover operative. After nearly dying in the field, he "retires" but finds life a bit boring so he takes on assorted gigs and helps people.

In the first story, SNOW FALLS, Snow interrupts an assassination attempt and gets involved in tracking down the hired killer and the client who hired her.

You can learn more about Snow Falls at Bookxy here.
Also, check out the amazing cover art by Dennis Calero.

Snow Falls is now available at Amazon, Amazon UK, and Amazon Canada.

###
Sean Taylor and I created a pulpy p.i. character named Rick Ruby, who headlines his own anthology title for Airship 27 called The Ruby Files. Vol. 1 was nominated for several pulp awards in 2013, even managed to snag a couple, including best new pulp character. Vol. 2 is slated to come out sometime this year.

About The Ruby Files:

GANGSTERS & GUNMOLLS

It was the 1930s and America was locked in the grip of the Great Depression. Gangsters controlled the major cities while outlaws roamed the rural back country. It
Bobby and Seanwas a time of Speak Easy gin-joints, Tommy-guns, fast cars and even faster dames. This is the world of New York based Private Investigator Rick Ruby, a world he is all too familiar with. From the back alleys of Gotham to the gold laden boulevards of Hollywood, Ruby is the shamus with a nose for trouble and an insatiable appetite for justice. So if you’ve got a taste for hot lead and knuckle sandwiches, tug your cuffs, adjust your fedora and light up a Lucky, a brand new pulp detective is coming your way.

Created by pulp masters, Bobby Nash and Sean Taylor, Rick Ruby echoes the tales of Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe while offering up his own brand of two-fisted action. Joined by fellow pulp smiths Andrew Salmon and William Patrick Maynard, these modern scribes of purple prose present a quartet of tales to delight any true lover of private eye fiction. Covers by Mark Wheatley. Vol. 1 interior illustrations by Rob Moran. Vol. 2 interior illustrations by Nik Poliwko.

You can learn more about Rick Ruby and The Ruby Files here.

Q: What is your newest writing project? The one you can't wait to start, or the one you just began recently? What's new in your writing world?

I’m currently scripting a graphic novel adaptation of Edgar Rice
Burroughs’ novel “At The Earth’s Core” for Sequential Pulp/Dark Horse Comics, going over editor notes on the Ghost Gal novel for Raven's Head Press, and making notes on two other projects on deck and ready to go. There never seems to be a shortage of work.

Q: Are you a fan of nonfiction books that help improve your writing, editing, or author marketing skills? Which book is your favorite?

Not really a fan. Nothing against the books themselves. Just not the type of stuff I like to read on a regular basis, but I’ve read a few. Stephen King’s On Writing and J. Michael Strazynski’s The Complete Book of Scriptwriting are a couple I have enjoyed.

Q: When an unplanned new character arrives on the page of your current work in progress, do you point to the door and demand it leave? Give it a chapter or two to see what it wants? Or sit perfectly still and make no sudden movements
for fear of what it plans?

I usually write the character and watch to see if he or she really fits. If so, then the character stays. If not, well, there’s the door. Ha! Ha! On one of the novels I’ve been working on around other deadlines, I started a new chapter and needed to get away from my main characters for a bit to break up the pace. I started writing a chapter that introduced not one, but two new characters. It was a great scene and one of the characters tied in beautifully, but at the end of it, I wasn’t sure about the other. Was he a one off or was he more important to the story? It was two chapters later when I realized his connection to one of the main characters and it all clicked into place as though it had been planned from the beginning.

I love it when that happens.

Q: What is the appeal of writing the Green Hornet and Kato?

I like the characters. They're fun. That was the foremost reason to do it for me.

Another aspect is that these characters come with a pre-existing fanbase, which means getting my work in front of potential new readers that might
like my story there and follow over to my other work.

A bonus to all of that was that working on existing popular characters like The Green Hornet and Kato brought with it press. I did a number of interviews as a result of working on the two GH books I provided stories for, which helped promote my other work.

Of the three volumes Moonstone published, I have stories in two of the Green Hornet anthologies-- Green Hornet Casefiles and Green Hornet Still At Large.

Q: If a big time mainstream publisher called, would you answer?

Sure. I'd listen and if it felt right, I'd certainly give it a go.

Granted, I am not only self-publishing, and I do very little of that because I don’t enjoy doing the production side of things.

Q: Do you have a writing buddy? Where did you find him/her?

Not really. I do have friends who are writers and sometimes I bounce questions or problems off of them.

Q: Sometime we wake up on the wrong side of the bed. Sometime we're upset with something in our lives ... but we still write. Emotion and creativity come are often two sides of the same coin. Do your moods show up in your manuscript? Does your usually sweet main character suddenly become a harpy or a bully when you're feeling off?

I try to keep it separate, but it’s not always easy. Mood can be a very powerful motivator. Today was one of those days. The biggest impact it had on my writing was keeping me away from it. I don't write well when I'm irritable.

Q: What's your number, that number of book sales that means success to you?

I don’t have a specific number in mind. Sales are obviously important, but how I measure success is not solely based on sales.

Q: At this moment, what is your favorite thing about being a writer?

I like telling stories. Being a writer allows me to do that. I love it.

And I think that is a good place to finish this round of Sometimes I Get Asked Stuff… Do you have any questions you’d like me to answer? Post them here as a comment or send them along to bobby@bobbynash.com and I’ll answer them in a future installment of Sometimes I Get Asked Stuff...

Also, please sign up for my mailing list. Drop me an email at bobby@bobbynash.com and I'll happily add you to the list.

You can find my books at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Goodreads, Smashwords, and more.

Happy Reading.
