SOMETIMES A TEASE IS JUST A TEASE...

I'm writing today. Nearing the end of the Ghost Gal novel. Here's a sample.

“Hey,” one of the mutts standing nearby said, finally finding his nerve. “Hey! You! This is our place, ya wanker. What are ya doin’ here?” He laughed, turned back to his smiling friends to show his manliness. They egged him on.

It was all Max could do not to laugh at the foolish idiot who believed himself a man worthy of speaking with such impunity to one of his betters.

As before, Max ignored him and ordered another drink.

“Hey! I’m talking to you!” He clapped a hand on Max’s shoulder.

Whatever reaction the idiot had been expecting, he got the opposite. Moving faster than the mutt’s eye could follow, Max spun around on the barstool, grabbed the man’s arm in his grip, and broke it in two as easily as if snapping a twig. The crack of breaking bone echoed through the still quiet bar.

Seconds later, the only sound he heard was the mutt’s screams as he cradled the now worthless arm dangling at his side.

Max turned back to the bar. “One more,” he told the bartender as if nothing else had happened.

WRITING, WRITING, AND MORE WRITING...

It has been a rather productive day on the writing front. It is always cool when that happens.

I've almost reached the end of the Ghost Gal novel, which has been fun to write and I look forward to getting in front of readers soon. We're planning this one as a series for Raven's Head Press so I look forward to telling more Ghost Gal stories in the near future.

I also started some preliminary work on the At The Earth's Core script tonight as well. I've now received all of the art (it's gorgeous, by the way) and am re-reading the original Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel to reacquaint myself with the world and characters. I want this to be as close to the source material as I can get it. This one will be published by Sequential Pulp/Dark Horse Comics.

But now it's time to push away from the desk and give my aching back a break.

I taped the '66 Batman movie on MeTV earlier tonight so I think I'll watch it before calling it a night.
I'm surprised that I don't own this one on DVD. Maybe I can correct that oversight when the new series DVD release of the TV series comes out soon.

IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS...

One of the greatest perks of writing comic books is seeing new art pop up in your inbox. Today started off with a bang as I received several beautiful pages of Jamie Chase's art from At The Earth's Core that we are doing for Sequential Pulp/Dark Horse Comics. I wish I could share them with you now, but you'll have to be patient while we finish getting the book together.

2014 NEW PULP AWARDS VOTING NOW OPEN!

I am honored that my story, “Fear The Dark” from Moonstone Books’ The Spider: Extreme Prejudice has been nominated for a NEW PULP AWARD. I am also nominated as Best Author as well. If you’re a pulp fan, please read all the nominees below and vote for your favorites. Voting is open to the public so please help spread the word.

The Spider: Extreme Prejudice is also nominated for Best Anthology.
The New Adventures of The Green Ghost, which I wrote a story for, is nominated for Best Cover Art by Mike Fyles and Best Pulp Revival.

PRESS RELEASE:

2014 NEW PULP AWARDS VOTING NOW OPEN!

Tommy Hancock, Coordinator of the New Pulp Awards (formerly the Pulp Ark Awards) which recognize the best in New Pulp each year, announced today that the final ballot of the 2014 New Pulp Awards has been compiled and released and voting has opened.  Voting will continue through 3 PM CST March 12, 2014.  The Awards will be physically presented at MidSouthCon in Memphis, Tennessee on March 23, 2014 at 2:30 PM.

“This,” Hancock states, “has been a stellar year for nominations.  That being said, some may not see the nominations they made on the final ballot. This could be for more than one reason, the most likely being that two or more nominations were made in a category when only one, per the rules, should have been made OR because a work or creator nominated did not qualify for the award.  This happened most frequently with the New Writer category where several writers were nominated who had been published previously prior to 2013 in a book/publication that was considered to be New Pulp.  This happens frequently because readers find someone they like and think the book they’ve read is the first one the author did.  It explains why even Sax Rohmer received a nomination for New Writer of the Year, one he unfortunately does not qualify for.”

This is the first year of not only the new name for the Awards, but also that voting is open fully to the public.  In the past, only those who nominated a work or person for an award were allowed to vote.  “This is a big deal,” says Hancock. “This means the New Pulp Awards may actually be the only Pulp Awards truly representative of the fanbase. Having said that, though, we are highly aware that anyone nominated or anyone supporting a nominee could rally up a whole slew of friends, family, and strangers and cast votes for them or their favorite. What we are encouraging is for no one to do that, but to encourage those who have read and/or reviewed the work to vote based on their interest in the work, not because the writer is their third cousin removed.  We are having to work on a sort of honor system here and hope our voters will appreciate and respect that.”
