EARTH STATION ONE EPISODE 219 – CAMPING WITH PRIDE

I’m still out with a rough bout of laryngitis, although I did pop on to croak my way through the Khan Report this week.

This 1 time, at Bat-CampOn this outrageous episode of the ESO podcast, the crew celebrate summer by going camp! Mah-velous Mike Faber, Fan-Tiki-Tastic Mike Gordon, and the sultry sounds of the award-winning Bobby Nash are joined by the divine Darren Nowell and Giant Girl goddess Sabrina Pandora to explore the history of camp style in our culture. We also find out if Keith R.A. DeCandido can use his new book, The Klingon Art of War, to help prepare for battling The Geek Seat, and we chat with Time Lord rocker Ken Spivey about his new album. All this, along with the usual Rants, Raves, Khan Report, and Shout Outs!

Don’t I know you from somewhere?

Next week, the ESO crew takes a look at actors who have hit it big as more than one character. Whether it’s Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Indiana Jones, Richard Dean Anderson and MacGyver and Jack O’Neill, or Kate Mulgrew as Kathryn Janeway and Red, ESO looks at fan-favorite characters brought to life by the same actor. Plus, you still get the usual assortment of Rants and Raves, Doctor Geek’s Moment of Science, shout outs, The Khan Report, and ESO straps author
into Balogun Ojetade into The Geek Seat. You’ll want to give this new episode of the Earth Station One podcast a double take.

ESO would love to hear from you. Which of your favorite characters from TV and movies were played by the same actor? Let us know your thoughts at esopodcast@gmail.com, 404-963-9057, www.esopodcast.com, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, or Pinterest. Who knows, we might just share yours on the show.

SCI FI SUMMER WRAP UP

Bobby Nash at the Author's Roundtable Panel at Sci Fi Summer Con 2014
Sci Fi Summer Program Cover
Art: Peter CutlerI was a guest at Sci Fi Summer Con in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, June 14th, 2014. This show is the type referred to as a relaxi-con because it is very laid back and geared more toward hanging out and enjoying the company of other like-minded fandoms. Sci Fi Summer has a small dealer’s room, artist alley, game room, and panels. It’s a great place to hang out and have a relaxing weekend.

Sci Fi Summer is a 3 day con, but I was only able to attend on Saturday due to my workload. I rode to the event with my Earth Station One co-host, Mike Gordon on Saturday. Surprisingly, the traffic wasn’t bad… until we were about a mile or two from our exit when interstate 285 came to a halt. Good thing we knew a back way in. Once there, we checked in and made the rounds, saying hello to friends Java from The Forgotten Doctor, Robert and Karen Ray, Robert Jeffrey, Peter Cutler, Randy Bishop, Christina Barber, and Timothy Price.

Timothy Price and Bobby NashI was scheduled for two panels on Saturday.
12 pm - Authors Roundtable (Panel Rm 2)
1 pm - Comix Roundtable (Panel Rm 2)

Funny story. Kinda. On the way to the noon panel, we learned that the door was locked. No problem. I contacted the hotel management and we discovered that the one key (yes. They only had 1 key) to this particular conference room had accidentally gone home with someone and they couldn’t get the door open. Eventually, maintenance came with a plan to take the door down so we could get inside. I guess
Dealer's Roomopening another room wasn’t an option. I don’t know. They removed the pics, but the door was still jammed. That, of course, was the time the key returned so we had to wait for them to put the door back together so it could be unlocked and opened.

During the wait, I basically held the panel in the hallway, answering questions about writing, marketing, you name it. When the door was finally opened at 12:45, we moved it inside the room. We had a small audience, but they had some good questions. No one showed for the comic panel. Joined by Big In Japan author Timothy Price, we continued on with the author panel until 2 p.m. It was fun.

Robert JeffreyThe rest of the day was spent walking around and chatting with folks, mostly hanging in artist alley. It was a fun, relaxing day spent with friends. You can’t get better than that.

Thanks to Chris Jones for inviting me out to the con.

It was fun.

Bobby

AN EVIL INTENT EXCERPT...

Author Jeremy Hicks tagged me in a status and now i have to post 7 lines after the 7th line on page 7 from my current work in progress "Evil Intent" Okay, I'll play. Here's mine:

The brave men and women Donnie Lehmann had fought shoulder to shoulder with in the hot desert sands of countries that he wished he couldn’t find on a map had died for freedom and liberty and here they were just handing it away to evil men with evil agendas. Donnie Lehmann saw all of it happening and wanted to help. He loved his country and wanted to keep it safe.

There was a quote he had learned once. “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” He couldn’t remember who had said it, especially in his current state, but the words rang true.

Donnie Lehmann saw the evil happening to the country he loved.

And he would do something about it.

###

And the rules that got us here:

Go to page 7 or 77 in your current WIP.
Go to line 7
Post on your facebook page/blog the next 7 sentences or 7 lines—as they are!
Tag 7 people to do the same.

This was a fun little experiment.
I hope you enjoyed the excerpt.

Of course, I can't let you get out of here without reminding you that Evil Ways is still on sale. Get yours today!

Bobby

EVIL WAYS
A novel by Bobby Nash

FBI Agent Harold Palmer needed a relaxing vacation. All he wanted was to travel to Sommersville, Georgia to visit his brother, newspaper publisher and reporter, Franklin Palmer. He should have known better.

The discovery of a brutally murdered young lady with a connection to the local police, coupled with a rowdy high school reunion and the annual Autumn Festival has Sommersville Sheriff Tom Myers and his deputies overwhelmed.

Agent Palmer finds himself on the trail of a killer who preys on the fears of his victims. His next targets are the unsuspecting members of the reunited class of ‘02.

BLOOD AND INK: 25 NEW PULP BOOKS TO GET YOU STARTED [GUESS WHAT BOOKS MADE THE LIST!]

Over on his blog, author Derrick Ferguson, along with Lucas Garrett, Barry Reese, and Andrew Salmon, compiled a list of good intro books to the world of New Pulp. I won’t get into the whole “what is pulp/New Pulp?” discussion here because it has been discussed ad infinitum and no one is closer to agreeing than when it all began.

This is a nice list the guys put together. I'm honored to have my work listed there twice, even though I wouldn't classify Evil Ways as pulp. The Ruby Files, on the other hand, definitely qualifies.

I know there are those who disagree with me on Evil Ways and I get where they are coming from. I certainly don’t mind it being called Pulp or New Pulp. It’s just not how I think of it. Then again, my writing style is pretty consistent across my various projects so I can see where they’re coming
from. Regardless, I’m honored to have made the list.

You can read the full list of the 25 New Pulp Books To Get You Started here.
