The Write Way to Self-Care: How Authors Can Prioritize Wellness in Their Writing Routine

Author Self-Care blog series

We all hear about how important self-care is that I’m sure we are all familiar with what it is, and that it’s important for us. I’m sure you’re familiar with the phrase “Self-care isn’t selfish”. That is so true. Taking care of yourself, your environment, and your mental health are the best investments you can make in your life.

Self-care is especially important for writers. It’s important to maintain our well-being in our profession. Whether you’re a full-time or part-time writer, you need to take your self-care seriously. As writers, we encounter numerous health challenges, including sedentary work, repetitive movements, eye strain, mental hurdles, and stress.

There are a few key strategies and tips for integrating self-care into your writing routine that will improve your health and reduce stress.

Add a few changes at a time Invest in the right equipment Take breaks Exercise Smart ChoicesUnderstanding Self-Care for Authors

As creative people, we are sometimes subject to the whims of our muse’. Keeping our creative well full and reducing stress and strain can increase our lives as writers. In any profession, it’s important to take care of your health and safety, but as writers, we face some special challenges.

Whether we write at a cafe, from our living room couch, or an office as writers, we often work a sedentary job. According to the Front Public Health article to the National Library of Medicine, the effect of work-related sedentary time on our health.

“Sedentariness has become one of the largest public health concerns, recognized as one of the main causes of preventable premature mortality.”

So, for this week’s blog we are going to focus on ways to decrease the amount of time you sit and increase your health as writers.

It’s important to realize that you don’t have to go out and buy any expensive equipment. We are going to discuss the minor changes you can make every day to improve your health, along with big changes you can work up to.

Full-time authors

Full-time authors can sit at their workstation for up to a standard eight hours like any other profession. Minus a few breaks that are still a long time to be sitting. We’ve already established that it isn’t good to sit for long periods of time.

I’m a full-time author myself. You can find my morning routine in this blog post to see when I get started every day. I finish my work day around four in the evening. That is a long time to be at my desk. If you would like to catch a glimpse of my office, you can check out my weekly Tea Time videos. The latest playlist is Tea Time with S. A. Crow reading Home Fires.

Starting small

What can you do to about our sedentary job as authors? Here are a few small ideas that can make a big difference.

Set a timer

If you haven’t heard of the pomodoro technique is a time management method created by Francesco Cirillo in the 1980s. According to the Todoist article The Pomodoro Technique, the technique consists of setting a timer for a specific amount of time “originally 25 min.” to focus on your work task, then take a 5 min. break before starting another focus timer.

Why and how could this help authors with our sedentary work?

It’s easy as getting up and moving while you are on a break. Yes, simple as that. Stand up, stretch your muscles, get a drink, flip over the laundry, or do a set of dishes. You’d be surprised what you can get done in five minutes.

There are several authors who host what are called writing sprints where they use this technique to help the writing community. Here is a spreadsheet of some of these authors and their live YouTube sprints. You can find me hosting writing sprints on Friday and Saturday morning starting at 9 am Central time on my YouTube channel.

Try using the Forest app to stay focused on your task and reduce phone distractions. Plus, you’ll help plant actual trees with the Trees for the Future organization. When our users spend virtual coins, they earn in Forest on planting actual trees, Forest team donates to our partner and creates planting orders. See our sponsor page here .

Desk Chair Yoga

Verywellfit’s article Performane-Building Yoga Stretches You Can Do at Your Desk gives a few moves that can help you stay healthy and get in some movement. These would be a great addition to do during the above focusing technique.

Neck rolls Cat-cow stretch Seated forward bend Seated eagle Seated spinal twist Wrist stretch Standing pigeon

To name a few. You can also find some YouTube videos with more chair exercises.

These are just a few changes you can make to your writing routine that can help you maintain your health. Look for more articles in this series.

What are some ways that you make your health a priority? Next time we will talk about larger ways to maintain your physical wellness as authors, so we’d love to hear about your tips and tricks.

Kimberly~ The book is a good and enjoyable romantic suspense read. The story has a good story line. The characters are good, and they have good chemistry.Brandy~ The Fire Inside was an amazing read. Having read the first book in this series I loved being able to see those characters show back up to help Anna and Tony when they need it. Anna is a spunky, amazing woman who has been through more than any person should have to go through in life. Coming out of it stronger than ever because of a fire burning inside her. She takes no crap and leads her own path. Tony is an amazing counterpart to her. He knows that he wants her, but that it has to be on her own terms and is an amazing and constant source of support for Anna after her abduction. He knows that letting her lead is going to be the only way that their relationship will grow. The twists and turns of the story keep you on edge, wondering who is really behind it all. Just when you think you have the mystery figured out, a new lead pops up and makes you rethink everything you thought you knew. Pick Up Book 1 if you haven’t and def take time to read both books in this amazing series.Eva Newman~ Excellent book. Shows how family and friends can help you get through anything.Leave a Review

Unveiling the Creative Dawn: Inside S. A. Crow's Morning Routine for Writing Success

In the fast-paced world of romance suspense writing, authors often find solace and inspiration in establishing a structured morning routine. Join S. A. Crow, the mastermind behind the captivating Fire Series, as we delve into her morning rituals that set the tone for a day filled with creativity and productivity.

6 AM: Rise and Shine

The day begins with Felix from Stray Kids saying “Wakey, Wakey” in his deep voice of the alarm clock at 6 am. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRVVvmYg9Ls&pp=ygUXZmVsaXggd2FrZXkgd2FrZXkgYWxhcm0%3Dhttps://youtu.be/YiyFWPHqDZ8?si=UDefRQnIet999Ncx Then it's onto some bed stretches for a few moments and then a calming meditation while my puppies try to get my attention because they know that I'm awake.

Furry Companions: A.J. and Destiny

You might know from my YouTube videos or Bark Adventures that we have two black Lab. mix puppies named A. J. and Destiny. Once I'm dressed for the day I get out of bed and try to make my bed while the dogs are excited to go outside. The next order of business is letting the dogs out for their morning stroll, connecting with nature, and setting a positive tone for the day, before they get their morning treat.

Tea Time for Inspiration

With the dogs taken care of, I brew her first mug of hot tea. This morning is a London Fog tea drink. Simply Earl Gray, Vanilla syrup, and creamer or milk. I'll be putting this recipe into next year's cookbook along with another favorite drink of mine. The comforting warmth of the tea serves as a catalyst for creativity as I prepare to dive into the world of her characters.

Engaging the Writing Community

As a dedicated member of various writing groups, I actively participate in fostering a sense of community. I post the writing prompt of the day and introduce a new word to enrich the vocabulary of fellow writers, creating an environment that encourages growth and learning. Word of the day from https://www.merriam-webster.com/word-of-the-day and Writing Prompt from https://www.writerswrite.co.za/daily-writing-prompt-2513/

Editing and ARC Preparation

The morning is dedicated to the meticulous editing and formatting of the advanced reader copy (ARC) for my upcoming novel, "If the Seas Catch Fire." You can find the sign-up link on the home page. You can learn more about If the Seas Catch Fire in these blog posts

Transition to Other Projects

Around 9 am, it's time to shift focus to various projects and communications. Whether it's working on a new storyline, collaborating with other authors, or responding to reader messages, this time allows me time to embrace the diversity of the creative endeavors.

Admin Work and Community Building

Before lunch, S. A. Crow dedicates time to administrative tasks related to author accounts and the writing group, "On the Wings for Writers." Building and maintaining a thriving community is crucial to me, and I ensure that both my personal brand and the writing group are running smoothly.

My morning routine serves as a blueprint for me to seek balance, inspiration, and productivity. By nurturing my creativity from the moment the alarm rings, I set the stage for a day filled with literary magic, leaving readers eagerly anticipating the next installment of the Fire Series.

The Influences of Beatrice Small's O'Malley Saga on My Writing Journey

As an author who’s had a passionate exploration through the realms of literature, I find myself compelled to share the stories and authors that have shaped my writing journey. Today, I invite you to embark on this literary voyage with me, starting with the enchanting world of historical romance crafted by Beatrice Small, particularly the O'Malley Saga of novels.

Discovering the O'Malley Family: A Literary Odyssey

My journey into the captivating universe of Beatrice Small's O'Malley Saga began at a tender age. The series, anchored by the indomitable Skye O'Malley, took me on a spellbinding journey through generations of love, trials, and triumphs. What struck me most profoundly was the unique approach Small took, weaving an entire family together all central character of Skye. Each installment felt like a chapter in a family saga, and it was my first encounter with a literary tapestry that spanned across generations.

As I delved deeper into the O'Malley novels, I found myself not just reading a series but witnessing the ebb and flow of a family's history. It left an indelible mark on my understanding of storytelling, inspiring me to create characters whose lives are interconnected in profound and intricate ways.

Hence the Fire series of novels starting with Into the Fire (Travis and Raven), The Fire Inside (Tony and Anna) and soon If the Seas Catch Fire (Steve and Mallory). This series is connected by a group of friends that make up a family of sorts and they are in and out of each other’s business and lives.

The Author

Beatrice Small, born on December 2, 1939, in Buffalo, New York, was a prolific American author renowned for her contributions to historical romance fiction. She passed away on September 8, 2015, leaving behind a legacy of captivating novels that continue to enchant readers.

Small's literary career soared to prominence with her breakthrough novel, "Skye O'Malley," which marked the beginning of the O'Malley Saga. This historical romance series became a hallmark of her writing, drawing readers into the tumultuous yet passionate world of the O'Malley family across generations.

Known for her ability to intricately weave historical details into romantic narratives, Beatrice Small captured the hearts of readers with her vivid storytelling and compelling characters. Her exploration of strong, independent heroines navigating complex historical settings set her apart in the genre.

Throughout her career, Small authored numerous historical romance novels, earning a dedicated fan base and widespread acclaim. Some of her notable works include "The Kadin," "The Love Slave," and "A Memory of Love."

Beatrice Small's impact on the romance genre was significant, and her novels continue to be celebrated for their rich historical contexts, passionate love stories, and strong, memorable characters. Her legacy lives on through the pages of her novels, inviting readers to immerse themselves in the timeless worlds she so skillfully brought to life.

Breaking the Chains of Censorship: Nurturing a Love for Reading

In my early years, I was fortunate to experience a lack of censorship when it came to my literary choices. My parents, recognizing the power of stories to ignite the imagination, allowed me to explore the vast world of literature without imposing restrictions. This freedom, in hindsight, played a pivotal role in shaping my diverse taste in genres and authors.

The O'Malley Saga, with its unabashed portrayal of love and passion, was one of the books that I could delve into without the constraints of censorship. It opened my eyes to the beauty of storytelling, unrestricted by societal norms, and fostered a deep appreciation for the unfiltered expression of human emotions within the pages of a book.

Inviting Reflection and Sharing: Join the Conversation

As I share my journey with Beatrice Small's O'Malley Saga, I encourage you, dear reader, to reflect on your earliest and most inspiring author. Who sparked the flame of your love for literature? Which stories resonate with you even today?

Moreover, let's dive into the topic of censorship in literature for children. What were your experiences? Do you believe in the importance of allowing young minds the freedom to explore various genres, or do you see value in setting boundaries?

In the spirit of building a community of literary enthusiasts, I invite you to share your thoughts in the comments section. Let's create a space where we can celebrate the authors who have shaped our literary landscapes and discuss the nuances of censorship in the world of children's literature.

Together, let's embark on a journey through pages, unraveling the threads that connect us to the stories that inspire us.

Long-Term Strategies for Prevention

In my previous posts, I opened up about my own struggles with burnout that led to an unexpected medical leave last year. I shared the subtle but critical warning signs - from physical fatigue to emotional detachment - that signal rising burnout. We discussed why these early indicators often go ignored, from societal pressures to push through stress to our own tendencies toward denial. Most importantly, I outlined proactive coping strategies to recognize and reverse burnout, from self-care basics to seeking support. Now, as I continue my own journey of resilience, I want to offer practical techniques to create sustainable change. My aim is to provide actionable steps to prevent burnout and cultivate career longevity, based on both research and personal experience.

After an unexpected medical leave forced me to confront my own burnout last year, I’ve been sharing my experiences in this blog series. My healing journey took an unexpected detour that ultimately taught me the importance of recognizing burnout’s early warning signs.

I had scheduled surgery that required taking significant time off from work. In preparing for this planned break, I didn’t realize how close I already was to burnout. The time for rest and recovery not only allowed my body to heal - it also gave me much-needed space for self-reflection. I was able to see how deeply burnout was impacting my physical, emotional, and mental health.

In my previous posts, I opened up about the subtle but critical signs of rising burnout that I had overlooked. From persistent exhaustion and headaches to irritability and decreased productivity, the indicators were there. However, like many, I had fallen into the trap of pushing through growing stress.

After confronting the realities of my own burnout, I started sharing insights learned from my struggles. My goal has been to help others identify the early red flags and take action before reaching their breaking point. Now, as I continue my own journey of building resilience, I want to offer practical techniques to create sustainable change.

As we reach the final installment of the Burnout Blog Series, it’s time to shift our focus towards long-term strategies for preventing burnout. In our journey through the intricacies of stress, resilience, and self-care, we’ve explored the depths of burnout and its impacts. Now, let’s delve into actionable strategies that can serve as a foundation for a sustainable and fulfilling career.

Throughout the series, we’ve explored various aspects of burnout. The topic resonated with me the most was learning the silent signs of burnout that we often miss. Silent Sirens: Unveiling the Warning Signs of Burnout, We Often Overlook

Mindful Work-Life Integration: The traditional concept of work-life balance is evolving into a more holistic approach – work-life integration. Rather than attempting to compartmentalize our lives, let’s strive for a harmonious blend. This involves setting realistic boundaries, learning to say no when necessary, and prioritizing activities that contribute to overall well-being. By integrating work and life seamlessly, we create a sustainable rhythm that minimizes burnout risks. Continuous Learning and Skill Development: Embrace the mindset of a lifelong learner. The ever-evolving professional landscape requires us to stay relevant and adaptable. Regularly update your skills, attend workshops, and pursue professional development opportunities. A sense of growth and accomplishment not only boosts job satisfaction but also acts as a buffer against burnout. Cultivate a Supportive Professional Network: Surround yourself with a diverse and supportive professional network. Building strong connections within and outside your field provides a valuable support system. Share experiences, seek advice, and offer your insights. Knowing that you’re not alone in facing challenges can significantly reduce the emotional toll of your work. Establish Clear Career Goals: Ambiguity and uncertainty can contribute to stress and burnout. Define your short-term and long-term career goals, breaking them down into manageable milestones. Having a clear roadmap not only provides direction, but also a sense of purpose and achievement. Prioritize Mental and Physical Health: Our mental and physical well-being are interconnected. Regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and a balanced diet play crucial roles in maintaining resilience against stress. Prioritize self-care and don’t hesitate to seek professional help when needed. Mental health is just as important as physical health. Flexible Work Arrangements: Advocate for or explore flexible work arrangements that align with your needs. Remote work options, flexible hours, and compressed workweeks can contribute to a healthier work-life balance. Discuss these possibilities with your employer to find a mutually beneficial arrangement. Regular Reflection and Evaluation: Periodically assess your workload, job satisfaction, and overall well-being. Reflect on your accomplishments and challenges, and be willing to make adjustments as needed. This self-awareness enables you to proactively address potential burnout triggers. Encourage a Positive Work Culture: Actively contribute to fostering a positive work environment. Encourage open communication, teamwork, and appreciation for each other’s efforts. A positive workplace culture not only enhances job satisfaction, but also acts as a powerful buffer against burnout.

As we conclude this burnout series, I encourage you to take time for self-reflection. Assess your current relationship with work and notice areas where small changes could make a big difference. Use the coping strategies outlined here to build the fulfilling, sustainable career you deserve. Set goals to prioritize self-care, and don’t be afraid to say no. Seek support when you need it, both personally and professionally. Cultivate work relationships built on open communication, empathy, and flexibility. Your well-being is the foundation for your success.

By taking proactive steps now, you can establish healthy habits and mindsets to prevent burnout in the long run. The time for change is now – you’ve got this! By taking time to care for ourselves, we can rise from the ashes of burnout stronger and more resilient.

Navigating the Abyss: Practical Strategies to Overcome Burnout

It’s time to know what to do when you’ve realized that you’re are close or in burnout. Today we’ll start with why it’s so important to address burnout. Last week we talked about what the hidden signs of burnout are and why we often ignore these signs. If you are catching this series today, let’s recap what burnout is.

Balancing Work and Life

Time Management for Work-Life Balance: Juggling work and life is an art. Master it by setting boundaries. Clock out when you should, and savor the non-work hours guilt-free. Your Netflix queue will thank you.

Hobbies and Personal Interests: Work hard, hobby harder. Find your passion outside the office walls. Whether it’s painting, hiking, or perfecting the art of pancake flipping, hobbies are the spice of life.

Importance of Taking Breaks: Breaks aren’t a luxury; they’re a necessity. Step away from the screen, breathe, maybe do a little dance. Breaks refresh your brain, and a refreshed brain is a productive brain.

Phew! We covered a lot today, didn’t we? From mastering the art of saying “no” to cultivating a positive work environment, you’ve got a whole toolbox of practical techniques now. Remember the Three R’s—Recognize, Reverse, Resilience? They’re not just letters; they’re your secret weapons against burnout.

Look, we’re all superheroes, but even Batman has Alfred, right? Reach out and assemble your support squad. Whether it’s connecting with other authors, chatting with a counselor, or just relying on your personal Avengers, seeking help is the ultimate power move. You’re not alone in this journey; we’re all navigating the crazy rollercoaster of life together.

So, go on, implement those self-care and support strategies. Take charge of your well-being like the boss you are. Burnout may be a tough opponent, but with the right moves, you’re unbeatable. Cheers to a healthier, happier you!

Silent Sirens: Unveiling the Warning Signs of Burnout, We Often Overlook

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged and excessive stress, often related to one’s work or personal life. It is characterized by a feeling of overwhelming fatigue, a sense of detachment or cynicism about one’s job or responsibilities, and a decline in professional or personal efficacy. Burnout can result from chronic exposure to high levels of stress and demands, leading individuals to feel depleted, overwhelmed, and unable to cope with the challenges they face. It not only affects a person’s work performance but can also have significant implications for their overall well-being and quality of life.

In my blog post Rising from the Ashes, we talked a little about burnout and suggested that I would have more information for my fellow writers and small business owners. Today we are focusing on the warning signs and why we ignore them.

The Hidden Warning Signs

You can show signs of burnout in many forms, in physical, emotional, and behavioral signs. Understanding these subtle indicators is essential for early recognition and intervention. Let’s start with the physical signs.

A. Physical Signs

Exhaustion and Fatigue: Beyond the usual tiredness, burnout-induced exhaustion is persistent and unrelenting. It’s not just about feeling tired after a hectic day, but a chronic and overwhelming sense of fatigue that persists even after ample rest. Persistent Headaches or Migraines: Frequent and unexplained headaches or migraines can be physical manifestations of the stress, and tension associated with burnout. These can become chronic if the underlying causes are not addressed. Sleep Disturbances: Burnout often disrupts sleep patterns, leading to difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing restorative sleep. Insomnia becomes a common companion, exacerbating the cycle of exhaustion.

B. Emotional Signs

Increased Irritability: Burnout can heighten irritability, making individuals more susceptible to frustration over minor issues. Individuals experiencing burnout may have strong emotional responses to small inconveniences that would typically be shrugged off. Emotional Detachment: Burnout can create a sense of emotional numbness or detachment, where individuals feel disconnected from their emotions or the emotions of others. This emotional withdrawal is a protective mechanism but can strain personal and professional relationships. Persistent Anxiety or Depression: While burnout and mental health issues are distinct, they often coexist. Persistent feelings of anxiety or depression, even outside of work hours, can indicate burnout taking a toll on one’s overall well-being.

C. Behavioral Signs

Decreased Productivity: Despite efforts, productivity may decline as burnout progresses. Tasks that were once manageable become overwhelming, and the ability to focus and accomplish goals diminishes. Procrastination: Burnout can lead to a tendency to procrastinate to cope with overwhelming tasks. This procrastination, however, contributes to a cycle of increased stress and reduced effectiveness. Neglecting Self-Care: Burnout often leads individuals to neglect self-care routines. This can include skipping meals, lack of exercise, and neglecting activities that bring joy and relaxation. The disregard for personal well-being further fuels the burnout cycle.

I was showing many signs of burn-out, so much so that I scheduled some appointments with my therapist to help me deal with what I called feeling overwhelmed. It’s no wonder that I felt this. I was setting up both my author business and writing group to work without me because of surgery. I was worried about how being on bed rest was going to affect my roommates, partner, and my own mental health. Jenn and I are transitioning from residential life to van life. If you want to learn more, check out Bark Adventures where we’re sharing our journey. It’s no wonder I was feeling overwhelmed before surgery. What I didn’t realize was that I was actually suffering from burnout. I had exhaustion and fatigue, headaches, some emotional detachment, and anxiety. The worst was a lack of productivity, which if you know anything about me, you know that I have a habit of associating my self-worth with my daily productivity. This lack led to depression, then fatigue, and a greater lack of productivity again until I was finding myself in a hole.

By recognizing these hidden signs, individuals can take proactive steps to address burnout before it reaches a crisis point. So why do we ignore these signs?

Why Do We Choose to Ignore Them?

Burnout is insidious, and one of its paradoxes lies in our tendency to overlook the warning signs. Understanding why we choose to ignore these indicators is crucial for breaking the cycle and fostering a culture of self-awareness. Here’s an elaboration on the reasons we often turn a blind eye to the signs of burnout:

A. Societal Expectations

The Culture of Overwork: Society often glorifies busyness and overwork as a badge of honor, fostering a culture that equates success with constant productivity. This cultural norm may lead individuals to dismiss their fatigue and exhaustion, pushing themselves to meet unrealistic expectations. Stigma Surrounding Mental Health: Despite growing awareness, there still exists a stigma around mental health issues, including burnout. Fear of judgment and societal misconceptions may compel individuals to downplay their struggles or avoid seeking help.

B. Personal Denial

Fear of Consequences: People who admit to burnout may experience a fear of professional and personal consequences. Individuals might worry about the impact on their career, relationships, or reputation, leading them to deny or downplay their symptoms. Superhero Syndrome: Some individuals harbor a belief that they are invincible or indispensable, a mindset often exacerbated by societal expectations. This “superhero syndrome” makes it challenging for them to acknowledge their vulnerability and need for self-care. Belief in Invincibility: There’s a common misconception that burnout happens to others, but not to oneself. This belief in invincibility can prevent individuals from recognizing the signs until they reach a critical point, thinking that they can endure stress indefinitely.

Understanding these societal and personal dynamics helps illuminate the reasons behind our collective tendency to ignore the signs of burnout. By addressing these factors, individuals can empower themselves to break free from the cycle of denial and take proactive steps toward well-being.

The social expectations that I suffer from and cause me to miss the signs of burnout are the culture of overwork and superhero syndrome. I spent some time working through these thought processes while I was on medical leave. It will continue to be a struggle to break these deep-seated social expectations and personal denial.

In closing, overwhelming exhaustion, detachment characterizes burnout, and declined efficacy that stems from prolonged and unmanaged stress. As we’ve explored, there are subtle but critical warning signs in our physical, emotional, and behavioral states that signal rising burnout. However, societal pressures and personal tendencies often compel us to overlook these signs until we reach a breaking point.

The key is greater self-awareness - tuning into our bodies, emotions, and behaviors to notice when we show symptoms of chronic stress. As discussed, fatigue, insomnia, irritability, emotional numbness, decreased productivity, and more can all be signals that we are burned out and need to regain balance. I share from my personal experience struggling with the societal pull towards constant productivity and a mistaken superhero self-image.

By recognizing our own warning signs early and understanding why we tend to dismiss them, we can interrupt the burnout cycle and prioritize holistic self-care. The next article in this series will provide actionable strategies to implement if you identify signs of burnout in yourself. This will cover sustainable lifestyle changes to reduce stress, methods to improve work-life balance, tools to enhance focus and drive, and when to seek professional support.

I encourage you to stay tuned next week when we explore practical techniques to cope with and overcome burnout. In the meantime, be gentle with yourselves, listen to your needs, and don’t hesitate to reach out if I can help you in any way! Together, we can rise from the ashes.

Rising from the Ashes: S. A. Crow's Journey Through Burnout, Medical Leave, and Resilience

It's so wonderful to write to you all today. I'm back in the seat and loving every moment of it. If you are wondering where I've been check out this post Shirley's Upcoming Sergury and What it Means. As you read in that post I was only expecting to be out for September. I prepared myself for this, social media preplaned, guest blog posts from fellow authors, and things to keep me busy while I was laid up in bed. Well you know the saying about best laid plans...

So What Happened

Well everything seemed to be going well until we found out that the bottom of my incision became nurcrotic so I made my way to the E.R. where they admitted me and scheduled another surgery. I was in the hospital for over a week. This surgery pushed my recovery time further back, until recently.

What Did I Learn

Besides new medical information and that I don't ever want to have another heel spur surgery again. I learned...

How close I was to burn out before I had surgery. That even though you have the means to work while healing, you won't always have the energy to work when your body needs every bit of it for healing. What is Burn Out

Definition of Burnout: Burnout is a state of chronic physical and emotional exhaustion often caused by prolonged periods of stress and overwork, particularly in professional or caregiving roles. It is characterized by a sense of depletion, reduced efficiency, and a negative shift in one's attitude towards work or responsibilities.

Effects on the Mind:

Emotional Exhaustion: Burnout can lead to intense feelings of fatigue and emotional depletion. Individuals may find themselves emotionally drained, with a reduced ability to cope with stressors. Cynicism and Detachment: A hallmark of burnout is the development of a cynical attitude towards work, colleagues, or responsibilities. This detachment may result in a decline in one's enthusiasm and commitment. Reduced Accomplishment and Efficacy: Burnout can diminish a person's sense of accomplishment and efficacy in their tasks. This perceived decline in performance can contribute to a negative cycle, further exacerbating burnout.

Effects on the Body:

Physical Fatigue: Prolonged stress and burnout can lead to physical exhaustion, manifesting as persistent fatigue, muscle aches, and overall weakness. Cognitive Impairments: Burnout can impact cognitive functions, leading to difficulties in concentration, memory problems, and impaired decision-making. These cognitive impairments can further contribute to work-related challenges. Sleep Disturbances: Burnout often disrupts sleep patterns, leading to difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing restorative sleep. Sleep disturbances can exacerbate both mental and physical symptoms. Weakened Immune System: Chronic stress associated with burnout can compromise the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to illnesses and infections.

It's important to recognize the signs of burnout early on and take proactive steps to address it. Seeking support, practicing self-care, and establishing a healthy work-life balance are crucial in preventing and managing burnout.

I will be talking more about this in future posts.

How I Bounced Back

Rest

Relaxation

Reflection

and a Game Plan

In the journey back from medical leave,

I've not only regained my physical strength but also found a renewed appreciation for the delicate balance between work and well-being. The unexpected detour through surgery brought with it an unexpected lesson about the proximity of burnout.

As I reflected on the experience, it became clear that burnout had been looming on the horizon before the surgery intervened. The forced pause, although initially challenging, provided me with valuable insights into the importance of recognizing signs of burnout and taking preemptive action.

The effects of burnout, both on the mind and body, became starkly evident during this period. Emotional exhaustion, cognitive impairments, and physical fatigue were unwelcome companions on my path to recovery. It was a wake-up call, a stark reminder that even with the means to work during healing, the body requires dedicated time and energy for restoration.

In the exploration of burnout's definition and its far-reaching effects, it became evident that burnout is not merely a buzzword but a real and tangible threat to our well-being. Recognizing the signs early on and heeding the call for self-care is not just a luxury but a necessity.

As I bounced back, the keys to my recovery were simple yet profound—rest, relaxation, reflection, and a solid game plan. Taking the time to recharge, allowing moments of pure relaxation, and reflecting on the patterns that led to burnout were crucial steps. Equally important was devising a game plan for the future—a roadmap that balances passion with self-care, work with well-being.

This experience has not only shaped my present but will influence my future posts, as I delve deeper into the importance of recognizing burnout, cultivating resilience, and fostering a culture of support within our communities. Join me in the upcoming discussions as we navigate the delicate dance between passion and self-preservation.
