10 Editing Tips to Turn your Rough Draft into a Polished Novel

Currently, I'm not only editing my novella Small Embers, a Fire series prequel. I'm also revising it and formatting it for the box-set Burning Desires coming this winter. I was so excited to start this last piece for the box-set until I opened the document and realized that it was a first draft (rough draft). Using Small Embers as an example I'm going to talk today about 10 editing tips I use. This time I'm having to skip my normal revision practice "The Book0end Revision Technique".

Which you can pick up a copy on Amazon. My normal routine is to divide up the story into documents containing only one chapter. Then I will revise the last chapter and next the first chapter, so I focus on what is actually on the page and not the story in my head. I developed this revision technique because I'm a dyslexic author.
1) What does my editing process look like this time after completing the first draft of "Small Embers"?I use a combination of AI applications to get through the process.
ProWritingAid helps polish and elevate your writing. In this application, I place the chapter I'm working on. ProWritingAid dedicates itself to improving your writing by addressing grammar, style, and other important factors.
Is an AI application. I let the AI know the scene's perspective and character traits, requesting a professional editorial report. This gives me a list of strengths and weaknesses of the scene and suggestions for improvement.
2) What are the biggest challenges in editing Small Embers?I'm lucky because my stories are tight and I rarely find plot holes. The main challenge on this project is that I have to revise, edit, and format scene by scene instead of working on an entire chapter at once.
The next challenge is my health and sleep pattern being broken, causing the project to be delayed even more.
3) How do you decide what to cut and what to keep during your edits?I'm a firm believer in going with your gut. Often writers are also ravenous readers, we may not know the scholastic rules of literature by heart, but we know what we've read and how it made us feel. We also know when something doesn't feel right or sound right. I have a writing friend that keeps all the parts she cuts to make short stories for her book series, check her out racheldadams.com. I often have to add more than cut. I almost write like a painter. I have a blank canvas and I block out the painting first and then fill in the details with each pass of edits.
4) What role do beta readers or critique partners play in your editing process?Beta readers and critique partners are an invaluable resource. I'm sad that this story didn't have a beta read because it's a surprise. It is getting feedback from my writing groups Live Critique Read nights though. The nice thing is that you can ask beta readers about the issues you are most worried about with your story.
5) How to approach Line edits and proofreading after the major structural changes are done?READ IT OUT LOUD! This is your best bet and you will catch more issues this way. AI's are helpful but not 100% right. They will miss things.
Live with the concept that mistakes are going to happen and it's okay. I've read so many novels published by large publishing houses with professional editors and still have found mistakes. If it happens to them, you are doing fine.
Another trick is to read it in a different format. Print it out if you normally have worked on it on the computer. Put it on your e-reader and read it that way. What a change of format can show you will surprise you.
6) What tools or resources can be most helpful during the editing process?Writing Sprints
You can find many writing or productivity sprints live on YouTube, often these hosts use a timer to divide up writing or focus time and break time. I find the sense of working together with a group helpful. You can catch my writing sprints every Friday and Saturday at 9am CST on my YouTube channel.
Focus or Study Music
I like Lofi study music while I'm editing.
AI tools
I listed off the tools I use above.
7) How to keep your characters' voices consistent through multiple drafts?I use Myers Briggs for making my character's personalities. By telling the AI I'm working with the character's present types helps give me pointers. I highly recommend that you spend some time looking over your characters and get to know them, so that way you know how they will act in a situation. Take into account their age, education level, backstory, and what they keeping to themselves.
8) At what point in the editing process do you start sharing your work with professional editors?Personally, I can't afford professional editors. I do the best I can with a little help from my writing friends. ARC (advanced reader copy) readers are a great help as well.
9) How do you manage balancing your creative vision with the critical eye needed during editing?I stand my ground about the concrete creative choices and vision that I have for the story. The other things can be changed and sometimes you have to face the fact that there is a better way of saying it or doing it than you thought of at first.
10) What is the most rewarding part of the editing process for me, especially with projects like Small Embers?I'm a big lister so any time that I can check a chapter as done in some way, it's a reward.
Being satisfied with the story at its new stage.
Seeing the chapters in my format tool ready for reading out loud.
The editing process is as much a creative journey as the drafting itself. With Small Embers, I've had to adjust my usual methods and confront new challenges, but each revision has brought the story closer to its full potential.
The key is to stay flexible--sometimes the process doesn't go as planned, and that's okay. Whether it's skipping my usual revision technique or adapting to time constraints, every step leads me closer to the polished manuscript. Small Embers has tested my patience and adaptability, it's also a reminder of how rewarding the process can be, especially as I prepare this novella for inclusion in Buring Desires box set.
Editing isn't about making it perfect--it's about making it the best version of the story you can.

From 'Storm' to 'Asher': How Carian Cole's Words Moved Me

Welcome to the next article in the Authors who Inspire Me blog series. Today we are going to talk about the romance author of the Ashes and Embers series, Carian Cole.
When I think of the authors who have pulled my heartstrings and made me have a physical reaction to their writing, Carian Cole immediately comes to mind. She's capable of moving readers to tears, laughter, and sometimes even anger. That is the power of a writer who knows how to tap into the deepest recesses of human emotion, and Carian does it with remarkable ease.
In her own words,
I first read her novel Storm, the opening to her Ashes and Embers series. I was instantly hooked by her storytelling, her creation of character that leapt off the page, and the intricate weaving of emotions that felt raw and real. Storm was just the beginning.
The last novel in the series, Asher, was a turning point for me as both a reader and a writer. Few authors can craft a story so visceral, so devastatingly beautiful, that it leaves an imprint on your soul. With Asher, Cole delivered a masterclass in emotional storytelling. Her ability to give characters heart-wrenching backstories, to explore their flaws and fears, and then bring them to a place of deep, transformative love is simply awe-inspiring. It's this depth and authenticity that I strive to bring to my own work.
She writes messy, complicated, and sometimes downright painful, but that's precisely what makes it so believable. Her stories don't shy away from the darkness--if anything, they embrace it, turning it into something breathtaking.
Thank you, Carian Cole, for your incredible talent. I'm rooting for your continued success and I hope someday I can meet you and say these words to you.

Finding Light in the Darkness: A Message for Authors During Suicide Prevention Month

September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to reflect on the importance of mental health, offer support, and remind each other that we are never truly alone. As writers, many of us face battles that often go unseen by the outside world or our readers. We wrestle with imposter syndrome, money troubles, and the constant sense of isolation that can seep into our creative process. These struggles can make it hard to see the beauty around ourselves and in our words.
I often find solace in music. The song that comes to mind when I thought about Suicide Prevention Month was immediately "Youtiful" by Stray Kids. Stray Kids a 4th generation K-Pop band out of South Korea is my favorite dopamine hit. The lyrics remind us that even in our lowest moments, we are still worthy of love, kindness, and connection. The song carries a powerful message: no matter how broken or lost we may feel, there is beauty in our existence. Sometimes, just hearing "you're beautiful the way you are" can make all the difference.
Youtiful- Stray Kids
[Verse 1: Bang Chan, Hyunjin]
Lookin' at yourself
A lot goes in your mind
"I don't know if I'm ready to show myself"
You worry day and night
Look at the stars fall
They leave the sky, goodbye
Must be an oracle, like a waterfall
They shower you with love tonight
[Pre-Chorus: Lee Know, Felix, Changbin, Han]
'Cause you are
You're perfect in my eyes
You are
Don't ever doubt yourself
(You are) I know that feeling too, I've been inside the dark
I've never been so empty, hopeless
(You are) But no, it isn't true
'Cause know that all the stars are by your side
[Chorus: Seungmin, Lee Know, I.N]
You know whenever there's a chance
I'll tell you that you're amazing as you are
'Cause when you give me a glance
I'm sure that I see the universe in your eyes
Don't you ever tell yourself that you're not enough
I am certain that you're truly fine
You are a miracle, miracle
You are youtiful

Let me tell a little story
About the star that couldn't shine or blink
Out of a million, billion
Felt like an alien, alien
Then that little star was surely
Going to become the biggest thing
Making a fantasy family
Beautiful galaxy, galaxy
[Pre-Chorus: Seungmin, Changbin, Lee Know]
'Cause you are
More than beautiful, one of a kind
You are
Just know I'm always by your side
[Chorus: Bang Chan, I.N, Changbin]
You know whenever there's a chance
I'll tell you that you're amazing as you are
'Cause when you give me a glance
I'm sure that I see the universe in your eyes
Don't you ever tell yourself that you're not enough
I am certain that you're truly fine
You are a miracle, miracle
You are youtiful
[Bridge: Felix, Seungmin]
Another day ahead, don't wanna leave the bed
You're looking at the mirror, see the tears covered in red
I know that you've been cold this whole time
But now I'm here to make it end
[Chorus: Han, Changbin, Hyunjin, (Seungmin, I.N, Lee Know)]
You know whenever there's a chance
I'll tell you that you're amazing as you are (Amazing as you are)
'Cause when you give me a glance
I'm sure that I see the universe in your eyes (Universe in your eyes)
Don't you ever tell yourself that you're not enough
I am certain that you're truly fine (Certain that you're truly fine)
You are a miracle, miracle
You are youtiful

For authors, the struggle is often internal. Imposter syndrome sneaks up after a rejection, lack of sales, a negative review, or even on a day when the words just won't flow. Financial stress adds another layer of pressure. We pour our hearts into our craft, like a painter with words, but it doesn't always come with the financial rewards we need to keep going. And then there's the isolation. Writing is often a solitary activity, and it's easy to feel like we're floating alone in a sea of words.
Joining supportive writing groups can help with imposter syndrome and the feelings of isolation.

But amidst the chaos, there are moments of light--small, weird things that bring us joy. maybe it's the smell of brewing coffee as you settle in for a writing session, the way your pet curls up next to you as you type, the thrill of finding the perfect word or phrase for that tricky part. These little things may seem insignificant to others, but they might be the only things keeping the darkness at bay.
My little weird things that keep the darkness at bay:
My dogs
Stray Kids
BL stories and actors
Music
my squishy plushies
checking things off my to do list
a warm mug of tea
dancing around the house
My writing group
Remember, it's okay to ask for help. You are not alone in this journey. Reach out to fellow authors, friends, and family when the weight of it all feels too much. Don't forget to celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may seem. Try a done list instead of a to do list. If you're struggling, reach out. If you are doing well reach out to your friends and check on them. If you're feeling alone, listen to a song that lifts you up, take a walk, or find a small joy to hold onto. The world needs your words, your voice, and your unique spark.

Real-Life Inspiration: How True Crime Influences Romantic Suspense

In the world of romantic suspense, the perfect blend of love and danger creates a thrill that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. I found my love for true crime when I was in high school, this was before the popular crime procedural shows or true crime podcasts, we are talking in the mid-90s. I think some of the first romance suspense or mystery novels I read were by the author Amanda Quick. So, where do these gripping, heart-pounding plot lines come from? Often, the answer is real-life crime stories. For example; "An episode of Criminal Minds (Season 3 Ep. 18) and the true crime case of the kidnapping and torture case of Colleen Stan partially inspired the Fire Inside.
True crime has always fascinated people. When I was getting my Bachelor's in Psychology 90% of the students were anticipating taking Abnormal Psych but also were true-crime junkies. The intricacies of real-life mysteries, the psychological profiles of criminals, and the raw emotions of those affected make for compelling storytelling. These make the perfect ingredients to add depth and realism to your plots and characters.
My roommates say I have a creepy habit. I'll be watching true-crime documentaries or crime-procedural shows, and a thought will strike me. Out comes the notebook or a scramble for paper and pen so I can start making notes on the novel idea. I often find myself drawn to the ripple effects of the crime. How did the crime change the lives of family members or friends of the direct victims, or the victims that got away and survived? I love the unpredictability of human behavior and one of my favorite courses in college was Social Psych, where we learned people don't act logically. Mixing these ingredients together with deep character studies has produced 3 of the 9 book Fire series.

Incorporating true crime into a romantic suspense plot is a delicate dance. You take the essence of a real event and weave in a fictional narrative. The key is to focus on the emotional stakes, make sure that the romance plot points is central, while the suspense keeps readers guessing.
Here is my road map:
I start with the romance plot because of its importance. I use the Seven Story Beats for a Romance novel
Once I have my romance plot points, I then do a deep dive into my antagonist who either commits the crime or encourages others to do their dirty work (example the main antagonist in "If the Seas Catch Fire"). Then I answer these questions about the suspense plot.
The crime
The motive
The crime scene
The detective
The detective's partners and what they know and how they help
Desire for justice (story goal)
Suspects (characters, what they are hiding, and body language notes)
Witnesses and/or backstory
Forensics (descriptions)
(plotting the events against the romance plot points)
The means and opportunity (conflict)
Clues (plot points)
Red Herrings C Plot
A confession (ending)
Justice (denouement)
A lesson (theme of the story)
Once I've answered as many of these as I can, I begin weaving and mixing both plots together to create the outline
True crime offers a treasure trove of inspiration for romantic suspense. Writers use real-life events to create authentic and tense stories that explore love in challenging situations. I hope you enjoy this glimpse into how I use true crime to shape my stories, and I look forward to sharing more with you in the weeks to come!

The Allure of Jacqueline Carey: The Mastermind Behind the Kushiel Series

This quote encapsulates the central theme of resilience in vulnerability, which is a recurring concept throughout the Kushiel series.
The first trilogy in Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy series begins with Kushiel's Dart. It follows the journey of Phèdre nó Delaunay, a young woman born with a unique scarlet mote in her eye, marking her as one chosen by the god Kushiel to experience pain and pleasure as one. Sold into indentured servitude, Phèdre is trained in espionage and the arts of love, becoming a courtesan-spy in a land of political intrigue, where treachery and loyalty, love and betrayal, are deeply intertwined.
Set in an alternate historical version of Europe called Terre d'Ange, where the descendants of angels and mortals live, the series weaves a rich tapestry of myth, politics, and romance. Phèdre’s journey is one of self-discovery and sacrifice, as she navigates a world where her gifts and her choices can tip the balance of power and determine the fate of nations.
The series is known for its lush prose, complex characters, and the exploration of themes such as love, power, consent, and the human condition. Through Phèdre’s eyes, readers are drawn into a world of danger, beauty, and deep emotional resonance, making Kushiel's Legacy a beloved and enduring work in the fantasy genre.
These books have everything HBO would want to make a hit series. Political intrigue, war, violence, and plenty of steamy scenes.
Jacqueline Carey is a distinguished American author best known for her Kushiel's Legacy series, a groundbreaking work in the fantasy genre. With a background in English literature and psychology, Carey has a deep understanding of narrative and character development, which shines through in her writing. Her most famous work, Kushiel's Dart, the first book in the Kushiel series, has captivated readers with its rich world-building, intricate plot, and complex characters.
The Kushiel series stands out in the fantasy genre for its blend of political intrigue, romance, and themes of power, love, and sacrifice. Set in the fictional land of Terre d'Ange, an alternate historical version of Europe, the series is renowned for its lush, poetic prose and its exploration of deep, often provocative themes. Carey's work challenges traditional genre boundaries by incorporating elements of dark fantasy, eroticism, and historical fiction, making Kushiel's Legacy a seminal work that has left a lasting impact on fantasy literature.
Through her intricate storytelling and unique approach to character and theme, Jacqueline Carey has earned a place among the most influential fantasy authors of her generation. Her work not only entertains but also provokes thought and discussion, inviting readers to explore the complexities of human nature and the power of choice.

I fell in love with the series from the first page. I'm a history buff and the way she used mythology, history, and geography as a foundation for these epic fantasy novels floors me. She has mastered having her audience empathize with her characters, even the ones you should dislike. Hands down one of the best female villains ever created in literature.
The Kushiel's Legacy series has made a profound impact on the fantasy genre, pushing the boundaries of what fantasy can be. Jacqueline Carey’s work is notable for its fearless exploration of complex themes such as the interplay of pain and pleasure, the intricacies of political power, and the nature of consent and autonomy. These themes, woven into a richly detailed and meticulously crafted world, have set a new standard for depth and maturity in fantasy storytelling.
Carey’s work also challenged the genre’s conventions by introducing a strong, sexually empowered female protagonist in Phèdre nó Delaunay. Unlike traditional fantasy heroines, Phèdre’s strength lies in her intelligence, emotional depth, and willingness to embrace her unique gifts, even when they come with great personal cost. This portrayal has inspired a new wave of fantasy authors to create more nuanced, multidimensional characters who break away from archetypal roles.
Moreover, Carey’s integration of historical elements with high fantasy has paved the way for other authors to blend genres in innovative ways, creating worlds that feel both familiar and fantastical. Her influence can be seen in the works of authors who have since explored similar themes of power dynamics, complex morality, and the intersection of love and duty.
Enduring PopularityThe Kushiel series continues to captivate readers and maintain a devoted fanbase more than two decades after its debut. One reason for its enduring popularity is the timeless nature of the themes it explores. Issues of power, consent, love, and sacrifice are universal, and Carey’s nuanced treatment of these topics resonates with readers across different backgrounds and experiences.
Additionally, the world of Terre d'Ange is so vividly realized that readers are drawn back to it time and again. The lush, immersive world-building allows readers to lose themselves in a setting that feels both fantastical and deeply real. Phèdre’s journey, filled with twists, betrayals, and moments of profound beauty, offers an emotional depth that leaves a lasting impression on those who experience it.
The series also stands out for its celebration of diversity in love and relationships, which continues to resonate in today’s increasingly inclusive literary landscape. This, combined with Carey’s exquisite prose and compelling storytelling, ensures that the Kushiel series remains a beloved classic in the fantasy genre.
I could go on for hours about these novels and the writing, foreshadowing, and characters.
If you haven’t yet delved into Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel’s Legacy series, now is the perfect time to start. This epic saga offers a richly woven tapestry of politics, love, sacrifice, and the power of choice, all set against the backdrop of a vividly imagined world. Phèdre nó Delaunay’s journey is one of the most compelling in fantasy literature, filled with unexpected twists, deep emotional resonance, and a protagonist who is as complex as she is unforgettable.
For those who have already experienced the magic of the Kushiel series, I encourage you to revisit it with fresh eyes. As with any great work of literature, there are layers and nuances that reveal themselves with each reading. Whether it’s the intricate world-building, the profound themes, or the beautifully crafted prose, Jacqueline Carey’s work continues to offer new insights and inspiration with every turn of the page.

Ultimate Guide on Author S. A. Crow

S. A. Crow is a LGBTQ+ author, writing coach, poet, and indie author living in Arlington, Texas with her lovely partner and two odd dogs. If she isn't writing, she's reading a good book.
I have always been a writer for fun since I was a child. I had a hard childhood and used to make up imaginary worlds in my head to escape. In my 20s, I sat down and wrote a book. It wasn't very good. I did not know about the craft of writing a novel, but I did it anyway. Sadly, I lost the manuscript, but the story lived in my memory.
November 2020, I went and signed up for NaNoWriMo and rewrote that story and I am so glad I did. I have so many more skills as an author now than I did in my 20s.
I hope that by sharing my work and journey with you, we can become better readers and authors together.
This article is a way for us to get to know each other in one place. You can expect a glimpse into my background, inspiration, pen names, works, and more.
Who is S. A. CrowBackground and BiographyI'm a total beach baby, being born in Southern California. My dad and my maternal grandmother have been the biggest influences in my life. Parts of my childhood weren't as nice under the fair California skies. Not that I would want anyone to go through some things I did, but it helped me form the person who I am and the writer I became.
Some of you might be familiar with my authors, who inspired me blog series and read that I wasn't censored as a child in reading materials, shows, or music choices. A mixture of my childhood trauma and the love of reading instilled in me by both my father and Grandma.
Pen NamesI've been a fan of romance suspense novels for a long time, so picking this genre to write in professionally first was a no brainer for me. I knew that Shirley Crow wasn't what I wanted to go with for my name on my novels. So, I chose my first and second initials. My other pen name came about when I sat down and rewrote that lost manuscript. The fact that it is a completely different genre and the fact that algorithms. I picked Ann Crow for my urban fantasy noir mystery P.I.R. (Paranormal Investigation and Registration) series.

The Fire Series is written under my S. A. Crow pen name and is a series of standalone novels connected by a group of friends. The series will comprise 9 novels and various short stories.
It all began with;
Into the FireRaven, a chef desperate to escape the high-pressure environment of Seattle's high-end restaurants, realizes that the career path she chose is not the right fit for her. While seeking a new direction, she serendipitously meets her favorite actor and gets the chance to cook for him. Confident in her culinary skills but uncertain about much else, she finds herself falling for him. But is her attraction to her famous boss worth risking everything she has worked for?
Travis regrets his relationship with his co-star Jessica and ends it. When he encounters Raven at a convention, he is captivated by her talent and hires her as his personal chef. Disillusioned by romance, especially after the toxic end of his relationship with Jessica, Travis begins to care deeply for his new chef. Yet, another workplace romance could spell disaster.
When Raven's life is endangered by Travis' stalker, he pushes her away for her safety. With the help of his friends, Travis realizes that his feelings for Raven are genuine. Can he win her back before it's too late? Can they overcome the obsession that haunts Travis and threatens Raven? Can they find the courage to fight for what could be the best thing for both of them?

Celebrating the Journey: Writing My First Novel 4 Years Later

Four years ago, I wrote my first novel and started my publishing company, Black Bird Books Publishers. At first, I needed to tell this story to cope with my depression and move past survival mode. But it turned into an amazing journey of a hero, with obstacles, victories, and lessons. Today I want to talk about the start of this story I'm living with you, like an author has the want to.

My ordinary world was filled with reading most days and watching reruns of Leverage, mostly filled with worry for Jenn and surviving. I remember a lot of numb days. We had lost 2 members of our family and their income, and to put the cherry on the cake, we lost our place and had to scramble to find a roommate and a place to live.
Watching Chrisitan Kane as Eliot Spenser gave me some great inspiration and slowly the call to adventure came as Travis Short.
Raven, a chef seeking a fresh start, and Travis, a famous actor disillusioned by romance, became my companions through late nights and early mornings. Their story unfolded in the high-pressure world of Seattle's culinary scene and the glitz of Hollywood, merging my love for romance and suspense.
As soon as I drafted Into the Fire, I knew deep in my chest that it was the start of a series.

Challenges: Overcoming Doubts and Obstacles
Oh, I hit these challenges hard and had to pull myself out of a second depression. First, I set an unrealistic deadline for publication right after drafting the novel. At the time, I did not know how difficult the next stages were going to be for me,
Some of you know that I'm a dyslexic author, which brings its own challenges to what would test any new author. I admit I didn't know at the time the stages of revisions and edits a book need before you can get to formatting.
When I hit this wall, one way I got myself out was to draft book 2 The Fire Inside, which its 2nd edition and new cover will be released this month. This break gave my brain the chance to come up with a solution to my editing problem.

Triumphs: moments of joy and success.
With this technique I've been able to revise all my novels to success. Next came the perfect image for the cover and most important of all the capital.
I'm sure you all remember the checks that came in 2020. I used my money to create my Publishing company and get promotion material for publishing Into the Fire.
Writing my first novel taught me numerous lessons, both as a writer and an individual. I learned the importance of patience and persistence, realizing that every step, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goal. I discovered the value of the community, finding support and encouragement from fellow writers and readers. Most importantly, I learned to trust my voice and embrace my unique storytelling style.

Bringing Fictional People to Life: Character Development

Writing fiction is a beast of another caliber in the world of literary writing.
When you pick up a book you want to be introduced to believable and engaging characters that are well-developed with motivations, a growth arc, and flaws you can empathize with. In this article we will explore character development because if you have great characters, you can place them in any plot.
It's the process of creating a character and evolving that character in the story and sometimes over a series. You need to make them well-rounded, believable, and engaging. It involves a character's personality traits, backstory, motivations, goals, strengths, flaws, and growth.
It's crucial because:
Engage the readers: You want well-developed characters that readers resonate with, causing them to be invested in the story and not put it down or at least reluctantly.
Drives the plot: If you have well-developed characters, you can place them in any plot because they have their own goals and drives that the plot will still be resolved.
Depth and Realism: Multidimensional and realistic characters help the story be believable. You want to mirror real-life complex people. No one is truly all good or all bad, logical or illogical, we are gems with facets and flaws.
Enhances Themes: All your characters including your antagonists embody the themes (a central topic, subject, or message within the narrative) and messages of your story.
Examples from The Fire series of themes
Into the Fire- Courage
The Fire Inside- Faith
If the Seas Catch Fire- Vulnerability
5. Creates Emotional Impact: When your characters go through something impactful your readers should identify and empathize with them leaving a lasting memory of those characters and your novel.
6. Fosters Connection: If you can impact a reader with your characters, they will follow your career and seek more of your work.
Elements of Character DevelopmentPersonality Traits- traits are consistent behaviors, attitudes, and emotional responses. Forming the core of a character's identity, and how they interact and handle the world you create for them.
Backstory- the events and experiences that happened in your characters past that might impact their personality, motivations, flaws, and strengths. Often act as blocks in their character arcs.
Motivations and goals- Your character needs to be driven to get out of bed, help others, or hate someone or something. What do they want to do? What are their dreams?
Strengths and weaknesses- Positive and negative attributes, skills, limitations, habits, hobbies.
Character arcs-transformation or growth of your character throughout your story.
Sometimes a writer has a clear picture of the elements of a character, but it doesn't hurt to use a tool to help keep your character grounded in reality and make your cast of characters as well-rounded as your main characters. One of the ways that can help is to use personality types e.g., Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or Enneagram.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)It's a pseudoscientific self-report questionnaire that claims to indicate your personality type. It comprises of sixteen personality types.
INTJ ISTJ
INTP ISFJ
ENTJ ESTJ
ENTP ESFJ
INFJ ISTP
INFP ISFP
ENFJ ESTP
ENFP ESFP
These are broken down in:
Extraverts (E) or Introversion (I) the first letter of your personality type.
Second letter of your type is the way you take in formation Sensing (S) or Intuition (N)
Then how you make decisions Thinking (T) or Feeling (F).
Lastly is how you deal with the world Judging (J) or Perceiving (P)
You can take a test here to find your own MBTI
Using MBTI to develop character personalities... Do I need to take a test for each character? No you don't need to take a test for each character. Instead by understanding the types, writers can create diverse and well-rounded characters. Here's how to use MBTI for character development:
1. Understanding the MBTI DichotomiesIntroversion (I) vs. Extraversion (E)
Introversion: Characters are reflective, reserved, and gain energy from alone time.
Extraversion: Characters are outgoing, energetic, and gain energy from social interactions.
Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N)
Sensing: Characters are practical, detail-oriented, and focus on the present.
Intuition: Characters are imaginative, future-focused, and see the big picture.
Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F)
Thinking: Characters make decisions based on logic and objective analysis.
Feeling: Characters make decisions based on personal values and emotions.
Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P)
Judging: Characters prefer structure, organization, and planned activities.
Perceiving: Characters are flexible, spontaneous, and open to new experiences.
2. Identifying Character TypesDetermine the Four Preferences: Decide where your character falls on each of the four dichotomies. For example, an ISTJ character would be Introverted, Sensing, Thinking, and Judging.
Research the 16 Types: Familiarize yourself with the descriptions and typical traits of each MBTI type. This will help you create consistent and believable behaviors for your character.
3. Creating Consistent BehaviorsPersonality Traits: Use the MBTI type to determine key personality traits. An ISTJ character might be reliable, detail-oriented, and responsible.
Behavior Patterns: Consider how the MBTI type influences the character’s interactions, decision-making, and reactions to various situations. For instance, an ISTJ might approach problems methodically and prefer clear rules and guidelines.
4. Developing Character RelationshipsComplementary Types: Explore how different MBTI types interact with each other. Complementary types can create dynamic and engaging relationships. For example, an ENFP (Extraverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Perceiving) might bring out an ISTJ’s (Introverted, Sensing, Thinking, Judging) adventurous side.
Conflict and Growth: Use MBTI differences to create conflict and opportunities for character growth. For example, an ISTJ might clash with an ENFP over their spontaneous nature but learn to appreciate their creativity over time.
5. Enhancing Character ArcsPersonal Development: Use the MBTI framework to guide your character’s growth. For example, an ISTJ might learn to be more open-minded and flexible, balancing their structured nature with spontaneity.
Consistency in Change: Ensure that any changes in your character’s personality are consistent with their MBTI type. Gradual growth and development should feel natural and believable.
6. Practical ToolsMBTI Profiles: Create detailed MBTI profiles for your characters, including strengths, weaknesses, and typical behaviors.
Scenario Planning: Use MBTI to plan how your character would react in different scenarios. This can help maintain consistency and deepen their development.
It is also easy to look up how each MBTI type would handle different situations like stress as an example. I use these personality types for my characters so one of the first things I look up for my main characters is their relationship fatal flaw and solution, pros and cons of dating this personality type, love language for the personality type.

"The Book That Changed My Life: Jacquie Gordon's Influence on My Writing"

I'm pretty sure that I picked up Give Me One Wish by Jacquie Gordon at a secondhand store. Passing a bookstore was almost unheard of on both sides of my family, so from an early age, the written word often surrounded me. I'm sure that this was my first sudo-biographical memoir novel, and it left a lasting impact on me not only as a person but also as an author.
The Authors who inspired me blog series is a way for me to share the authors and books that shaped my writing style, storytelling approach, and my personal life.
Studying literary influences can benefit aspiring writers in many ways, such as developing skills, finding their voice, building a foundation, and overcoming writer's block.
Encounter "Give Me One Wish"I don't remember how I picked up this book or how it ended up in my collection until I lent it to a friend and lost it forever. But I do remember what I learned from this novel. I hadn't known about the disease before, but it made me realize how devastating it would be for a parent to be told that their child will die at a certain age because no one with the disease has lived longer than that. The fact that her daughter not only lived longer than anyone with but she lived life in her terms.
The other thing I learned was about The Rocky Horror Picture Show. For those who haven't had this right of passage here is a bit about it. The movie was made 1975 as a independent musical comedy horror film produced by Lou Adler and Michael White. Directed by Jim Sharman. Richard O'Brien was living as an unemployed actor in London during the early 1970s. He wrote most of The Rocky Horror Show during one winter just to occupy himself. Initial reception was extremely negative, but it soon became a hit as a midnight movie, when audiences began participating with the film at the Waverly Theater in New York City in 1976. Audience members returned to the cinemas frequently and talked back to the screen and began dressing as the characters, spawning similar performance groups across the United States. At almost the same time, fans in costume began performing alongside the film. This "shadow cast" mimed the actions on screen above and behind them, while lip-synching their characters' lines.~Wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rocky_Horror_Picture_Show
If you have a chance check out this book. Gift it to a young adult that you know.

"Inside the Mind of Author Devon Gambrell: A Revealing Interview"

Devon writes fantasy and steampunk with a splash of romance and snarky female leads and is the founder of All Call Indie, a database of freelancers for indie authors. She lives in Northeast Florida with her husband and teen boys, where they manage various animals.
Let's get to the Interview
Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?
I don’t. I do see it as a neccessity. If I don’t write, I start to get antsy keeping all the stories in my head.
2. Does writing energize or exhaust you?
Neither. If anything it’s a releif to finally being able to sit down and get the words out.
3. Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?
I do believe that anyone can be a writer. All anyone really needs is imagination to tell a story. Everything else is secondary.
4. What advice would you give to other writers or authors who also struggle with disabilities?
Take your time to experiment what works or doesn’t work for you. This would be the most important step, because once you find that sweet spot everything is a breeze. On a side note, life can change, so what you find right now, may need to be tweaked later.

5. What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?
I think I was too young to remember, books had always made an impact on those around me and I paid attention to that.
6. What is your favorite under-appreciated novel?
Coffee & KungFu by Karen Birchoux and the Taltos series by Steven Brust.
7. Have you ever gotten reader’s block?
I wouldn’t call it reader’s block so much as a hangover from a really good book. A book so good you can’t pick up another one.
8. What kind of research do you do and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
Most of my research is internet based. Occasionally, a historical or lit book from the library will be added. For clothing though, since most of my writing is historical based, I watch YouTube videos. Historical reenactments are really helpful.
9. What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?
Mannerisms.
10. What was your hardest scene to write?
Battle scenes are so hard to write! I feel that you have to go into role playing to get it down.
11. Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
I tend to stear clear of reviews and rely on my closets friends and family to fill me in. Praise makes me uncomfortable and negativity just makes me angry. If it’s constructive critisim, I’ll take it. Afterall, it could help me improve my writing.

12. If you were to write a spin-off about a side character, which would you pick?
It’s already in the works! Amabel’s mother and aunt have a standalone coming!
13. What’s your favorite writing snack or drink?
Ramen and tea, or sprakling water.
14. If your book were made into a movie, which actors would play your characters?
That’s a hard one! I imagined Tristian Hayes as Amabel (MacGuyver), and as Derek.
15. Have you ever killed off a character your readers loved?
Not yet! But that’s right around the corner, gasp!
16. What is your kryptonite as a writer?
True crime and dinosaur documentaries.
17. If a famous author could mentor you. Who would it be?
I don’t think I can choose just one. I take a bit of every author when I pick out a detail I want to add to my stories.
18. What do the words “literary success” mean to you? How do you picture it?
Selling about 50 a month.
19. Has writing and publishing a book changed the way you see yourself?
I don’t feel that it has. I’ve always known that once I found something that I truly loved I would embrace it.
20. As a writer, what would you choose as your spirit animal?
A dragon, lol!
21. Whom do you trust for objective and constructive criticism of your work?
My critique partners and beta readers have been the absolute best!
