Simily: Paid Fiction Publication
I wanted to spread the word to my fellow fiction writers today about a website of possible interest: Simily. Simily is a website where writers self-publish their short fiction (there is no preference for genre made). Writers retain full rights to their work and are paid $0.02 per view per month during its beta period. The website shares that once readership has been established, they will pay 20% of subscription fees back as royalties to their writers. Readers can read for free (limited to 5 shorts a month) or can pay a subscription to have more access.
The only real drawback, from what I can tell, is that payouts are after a writer hits $10 (they state that if you make less then your money will roll over into the next month). There’s also quite a bit dependent on them drawing in a large enough subscription base for a healthy payout once they move over to the royalty payment.
I signed up and submitted my first short so I can update more on my experience with time. I am also always happy to see paying markets for creative writing.

LitCon and Virtual Book Fairs
I’m surely not the only writer in the world who reminiscences about Scholastic book fairs when they were a kid? The year my grandma gave me a blank check was probably the highest manic peak I will ever achieve in my life.
With COVID running it’s rounds, book fairs are a special memory for me right now, especially as I try to market my poetry book for sale. In the Goodreads community I heard about virtual book fairs and was taken back to my elementary day fantasies. Last night I decided to sign up for LitCon and spent this morning setting up my “virtual booth”. Now, my virtual booth is technically a forum post (I was hoping for a low poly count animation in the style of DOOM, going from vendor table to vendor table) but it is set up!
There will be events held over the weekend, some paid and some free, much like most other conventions. There are genre managers that help set this up, all volunteers themselves.
I’m most curious to see the final product and, of course, the impact on sales! I plan on reporting back my experience and also doing more research on other virtual book fairs.
