E.S. Lell's Blog, page 3

January 15, 2013

Yes, I know it’s been too long….

Sorry, all. I know I’ve been remiss in keeping this blog up to date.

A couple weeks ago, my wife called me a couple hours into the work day to tell me the basement was flooding. I rushed home to help mitigate and found that the main sewer line had been blocked and backed up into the basement. Fortunately, it had only backed up a couple of showers by then, and there is no pad under the industrial carpet down there, so we were able to get it all cleaned up in a couple days. We had the main drain cleaned out, as well as the floor drain in the boiler room and spent the better part of two days sucking up water and cleaning (and recleaning, and recleaning, and recleaning) the carpet with the shop vac and the carpet shampooer. We bleached the heck out of all the concrete and framing and so on, then had fans going on everything for a week to make sure there was no moisture left down there. It was awesome good fun, I have to say *sarcasm*

All told, it cost about $600 for the plumber, and to replace a couple power strips and external power supplies that were on the floor in my office. But, everything is up and running again, all electronics are now up off the floor, mounted nicely under my desk, and I am back to work!

Firstly, the 5th Key is getting back on track, but is still on a very tight deadline at this point. We’re still hopeful for a StarFest release, but I still want to make it clear that I will hold onto it as long as I need to in order to make sure it is the best it can be, rather than just let it go to make a date. You all deserve better than that.

In a similar vein, David Magoun, the cover artist for the novels and forthcoming RPGs (More on that here in a minute), has shared some ideas with me and says he will be presenting some roughs here soon. I am very much looking forward to seeing his ideas and choosing a final cover. He’s been passing along some sketches he’s been doing to get back into Kalijor mode and all I can say is, wow! His work just keeps getting better and better. I expect this cover will be pretty epic.

In RPG news, I am nearly done rewriting the text. Playtesting continues, and feedback continues to be very positive. It’s getting to the point where we’re going to start really focusing on typesetting and layout in preparation for art and printing. What this means is that there will be an announcement fairly soon for the Kickstarter campaign. We’ll be asking for money to pay for the art in the book, plus a little bit to cover the publishing costs, which are fairly minimal since we still use print on demand. We have a minimum number we’ll need to get in order to reach what we feel is an appropriate amount of art content, but the more we get, the more art will be in the book. So when the campaign goes live, we’ll be asking for your help in getting the word out as far and wide as we can, to make it the absolute best we can!

Related to the RPG, we have also taken on another, much smaller, project to make a version of the RPG for young kids (7-12), and another version for the real young ones (4-7) to help them work on number recognition, counting, basic math, socialization skills, critical thinking, and also to open their eyes and mind up to the amazing world of RPGs. There’ll be more info about this in the Kickstarter campaign and here on the site once that goes live.

Next up, convention details!

So, I’m going to be at COSine in Colorado Springs next weekend, January 25, 26, and 27. I won’t have a table there, but I will be on several panels, and I’ll also be doing a reading on Sunday. I hope to see you all there (times/panel info below):

FRIDAY

6 – 7pm    Rampart    “Pagan Influences on Fantasy and Science Fiction”

SATURDAY

5 – 6pm    Pikes Peak Ballroom    “Author Reception, Raffle, and Mass Autographing”

7 – 8pm    Breckenridge   “Deus ex Magica”

SUNDAY

1 – 2pm    Telluride    READING – Paul Lell

In February we have GalaxyFest in Colorado Springs from Thursday the 7th, through Sunday the 10th. We’ll have a table in Slipstream Alley to sell and sign books, and I’m supposed to be on a few panels, as well as running a Kalijor RPG campaign on Sunday afternoon. More details on times and panels as I have them.

After that, we have Genghis Con in Aurora from Friday the 15th through Sunday the 17th. We weren’t able to get a table in the vendor room for this con, but I will be there to run a Kalijor RPG campaign a couple times on Saturday and ones on Sunday. So, come on down, check out the game, and hang out with us at the table.

Saturday from 9am-1pm

Saturday from 2pm-6pm

Sunday from 9am-1pm

Our next Con after Genghis is StarFest in April. I’m hoping to get on some panels and such, as well as releasing the new novel there. More information to follow.

I think that’s about it for now, so I’ll let you go. I hope to be spending more time with this blog going forward. I’ve had a lot of crazy stuff come up recently, but I think we’re through most of it and getting back on track, so here’s hoping!

Oh, one more thing… I leave you with this image, the cover for this year’s convention book… Any guesses on the title?

Have an awesome day, everyone.

Heyas!

How’s it going out there in internet-land?

Things here are moving along still. I finished the Reqrite on teh Cybernetics, Genetics, Races, and Classes sections of the Kalijor RPG earlier this week. Last week I added the Alignment info, so that’s in good shape. I am now giving the combat section another pass before I add in information on leveling/character progression, then we are down to huge play-testing and tweaking efforts. What that means is, we could be gearing up for the Kickstarter campaign here shortly to line up funds for art and publication! Don’t get me wrong, there is still much to do, but after this week it will be mostly tweaks, adjustments, and minor content additions, such as skills and equipment that is needed to make sure the main book has absolutely everything that is needed for a full, robust, starter campaign.

As soon as I put that to bed, I am diving back into revisions on the Fifth Key. Editing is at about 50% and I have comments back from one of my early test readers. Not much came up that was unexpected. A few tweaks need to be made, but I kind of wanted to adjust those thigns anyway so it was good to hear someone else agree with me. I have plans in place for most of those adjustments and none of it will take very long so I can probably even get them into the copy my editor has before she gets to them in her first pass. This is a good thing!

Oh! And new bookmark art just came in, so I am working on a set of four new bookmarks for 2013!

Other news.

Sales for the holidays:

There is still a sale going on at the Kalijor Press Book Store. By using coupon code: FELICITAS (use all caps), you can save 20% on your entire order through December 14th.
All Kalijor eBooks (except Jumah’s World) are on sale, on all eBook platforms, for $0.99 each, through the end of 2012! Head on over to Amazon, Barnes and Nobel, the Kobo store, or iBooks, and grab the first dour novels for $4 (plus any applicable taxes/fees from said stores)!

Gift Cards from Square!

I use Square to process credit cards and such while I am at conventions, and they have just released a new feature that allows customers to buy and gift to others cards that they can use to pay for stuff from Kalijor Press! To be clear, this will only work if folks are buying books directly from us, either at a convention, or over the phone/email, but it is still a very cool and convenient way to gift someone the amazing world of Kalijor. To take advantage of this all you need to do is download the ‘Square Wallet’ app on your smart phone (iOS or Android), then search for the business ‘Kalijor Press’. Once you have us in your Square Wallet, you can purchase gift cards, send them to friends and family, and even pay us for books right from the app when you see us at conventions! The gift cards will work from teh app, through email, in Apple’s PassBook app, or can even be printed out and scaned at the time of purchase.

I think that’s about it for now. So, I’ll let y’all get back to your days. Thank you all for your love and support and I look forward to all the awesome that is coming in 2013!

Enter Cliche ‘It’s been a while’ Line Here…

Heyas, everyone!

So, given the title of this post, I am not going to bore you with all of that. I’ll suffice to say that, I have been working on several things!!

Before I get into all of that, however, I would like to take a moment to thank the Pinnacle Charter School’s Advanced Creative Reading Class for their hospitality and energy. They invited me to stop by yesterday (Wednesday the 5th) and chat with them about the processes and pitfalls of writing a novel. I had a great time, and the kids had some aesome questions, comments, and insights. Again, it was an emminantly enjoyable experience and I hope they’ll have me back again in future. :)

Also, it was pretty cool t be greeted at the door by the class.

Okay, on to other business!

This week I finished the rewriting of the Cybernetics and Genetics sections of the RPG, and added in the majority of the info about alignments and other character-defining traits. I still ahve some more to add in order to flesh out the available options a bit more fully, but it is otherwise functional. My next steps (begun last night) are to go through the races and classes and remove any remaining artifacts from the previous rules, as well as adding in starting skills and making other minor tweaks. I think I’ll be able to get through that by or before the end of this weekend and move on to teh last major mechanic that needs to go in, which is leveling. Once that’s done, I think we’ll be down to doing as much live testing as we can, and making tweaks and adjustments to the system and content.

I have to say that I am trying not to get too heady here, but the RPG is beginning to feel more and more like it is on the verge of being ready for art, layout, and typesetting. That means it is really getting close being finished!

In art news, David (our amazing cover artist from over at Full Spectrum Arts) has been busy making some refinements to a few of the smaller, but important details of the world of Kalijor. He’s been updating some of his other work with the new Riana, finalizing some high-resolution images for Elkorine and Chavan and some other iconic items, and refining the world view. The nice thing is, this is all stuff that can go into the art book, which is still an iron in the fire for early next year!

Also, he has an advance copy of teh Fifth Key, so he is already prototyping cover images for the final book in teh Keys series. :)

On the subject of teh Fifth Key, things are going slowly. My editor is having some issues that are dragging on the editing process. I remain hopeful that we will still hit our April launch, but at this point, we are no longer ahead of schedule for the work needing to be completed. I’ll keep you posted, but I also want yo uto know that if I have to choose between an April launch and a solid edit, I will push out the launch to make sure the quality of the book is as good as it can be. I’m not saying, at this stage, that it will deliver late, but I am saying that if it needs to be, it will be.

Next up, a reminder that all Kalijor Press eBooks, on all platforms (Kindle, iBooks, Nook, Kobo, etc.), with the exception of Jumah’s World, are on sale for $0.99 each through the end of the year. If you’ve been on teh fence about a purchase, or you know someone who would enjoy the books, now is definitely the time to buy in. Prices will be returning to normal on January 1st, 2013.

And on the subject of sales, there is another sale going on at the Kalijor Press Book Store. Now through December 14th, you can save 20% on your entire order by using soupon code: FELICITAS at checkout (it is case sensitive, so be sure you use all caps). Remember, the only place you can get hard-cover versions of the books right now is from the online store, or directly from me, so this sale is pretty huge. Please take advantage now if you’ve been waiting as this is likely the last sale of the year.

So, I think that’s about it for now. I have to get back to work, lots to do, so I’ll let you go. I hope to post a couple more times this year, but you know how I tend to get lost in projects, so we’ll see.

So, to all you new folks out there, thank you for joining us. We are overjoyed to have you here with us and we’re looking forward to a bright future here at Kalijor Press!

That said, I am out of here, folks!

Life is…

Eternally complicated, it seems.

Work has not been awesome lately, as I have mentioned before, and it has kept me from doing much of what I want to do in my personal time. What personal time I have these days, anyway. Still, some things are getting attention during this interesting period of my life.

Editing on the Fifth key is proceeding ,albeit a little more slowly than I had hoped, but it will still be done in time for release as planned. Also, I have finished revising ‘The Aegis Protocol’ (the 2014 or late 2013 novel), and have dived into ‘The Turin Gambit’ which is the one after that..

Our staff artist is hopefully going to see some resolution on some of his weighty and persistent personal issues soon which means cover art can begin, as well as some new promotional stuff for cons and so forth. Looking forward to seeing him cut loose on the Kalijor world again.

There is a sale going on at The Kalijor Press Book Store through the 13th. It’s pretty short, but you can save 20% by using coupon code: VETS2012 at checkout. The holidays are coming up and it’s a great chance to pick up the gift of a great book, or even a whole series of books, for someone you love and want to share a great yarn with.

That’s about it for now. I’m going to go try and get some work done on the RPG while I’m feeling a bit better. Y’all have an awesome day and I’ll chat at you later!

Late October Update

Heyas, everyone!

So, not a lot of work has been done lately. My day-job, blast the bery need for it, has turned into something I would probably describe as hellish, if asked. As a reuslt, my motivation for other projects has diminished significantly, which is sort of a bummer since it’s all those other projets that have the power to free me from the aforementioned hellish nightmare…

Go figure, eh?

That said, there could be an end to the nightmare in sight. We’ll see what happens there, and I’m not saying anything more until I know something more. Which will likely be after it’s all said and done, either direction. Because of this potential, I am feeling a resurgence of motivation and feel I will start getting things done again this week.

There are two important things to remember in light of the above, however. First is that the editing on the Fifth Key has not stopped or even really slowed down as a result of my own issues, so that is all still on track. Secondly, the only othe rmajor project I have been focusing on recently has been the RPG, which is in pretty good shape and just needs some rearranging and revising before it goes out to more testers to be put therough the wringer. So I will get back on the RPG deal this week and try to make that happen ASAP. I even got back into revising the next novel (the one AFTER the Fifth Key launches) last night. I’m over 60% of the way through and can get it to editing early next year at the latest.

The art book is on David’s plate, and he is swamped in other personal matters just now, but we are still targetting our February conventions for release of that awesome material. Keep your fingers crossed that his life calms down soon because the man could really use some calm right about now.

Next up, there is a sale going on at the Kalijor Press Book Store. Head on over and use cupon code: BRAINFOOD to save 20% on your entire order. This is a great opportunity to get some of your holiday shopping done for yourself or others, or jus tpick up copies to read now at a great price.

I think that’s about it for now. We’re waiting to hear back from teh folks that run COSine in Colorado Springs. WE should get news mid-November as to whether or not we will be participating in that con in January. After that we have GalaxyFest and Genghis Con (where I will be running Kalijor RPG sessions for anyone who would like to play and offer feedback) in February, then StarFest in April, Denver Comic Con in late May/June, and GenCon (where I will again be running games) in August. Plus much, much more!

Oh! Last thing before I let you all go. I know Kalijor has a small but dedicated fan base right now, but I also know it has a ton of potential. We have plans to get into as many different mediums as we can, and we will get there eventually, but we will get there much faster with your help! Please, tell your friends and family about Kalijor. Get them to buy books and join us on Facebook and here at Kalijor.com. Get them to tell their friends and family and have them come join us. The faser we build community, the faster myself and my fellow creators will be able to feed you more from this world! So, help us get you your Kalijor!

Update, Mile Hi Con!

Hey, everyone!

I know it’s been a little while since my last update, and i apologize. I’ve been working on a few things in teh background, the most pressing of which was picking out a good selection to present at the reading I have coming up this Friday evening at Mile Hi Con. I did find a good chunk that I am going to read, and edited it for better oral delivery. I’ve practiced it a couple times and it looks to be right around 20 minutes in length. I should have 30 minutes to work with, but it is part of an hour I am sharing with another author, so I’m not sure how that will all work out. The potentialy good thing though, is that there is nothing else scheduled in that room for an hour after the reading, so there is time to bleed over, assuming the audience is interested in carrying Q&A over, or buying books, or socializing, or anything else. :)

Around that, I have been working on the Kalijor RPG book and have made significant progress there. I’ve got all of the currently included skills and abilities fully described and statted out, and all spells have been switched over to the new rules system and ‘ranking’ trees. I’ve added several new equipment sections and tweaked the combat section and combat skills to include initiative. Next up, I wil be diving into the rewrite of teh genetics and cybernetics sections to make sure they are entirely ours and ideally suited to the world at hand.

I’ve also been working on editing the next Kalijor novel (about halfway through the rewrite now, and the 2013 con book, which is ready for third party editing now and its cover is done!

David Magoun and I are still working on the Kalijor art book and plan to have it in print as soon as possible, but life is doing as it tends to do and holding things up wherever possible. It is still on the plan though, and truthfully, well under way. WE may not see it until 2013, but when we do, it will be even better than I had originally hoped.

So, that’s whats been going on, and what is coming up. Please, come out and see us this weekend at Mile Hi Con in Denver. I will be appearing in several panels and doing a reading Friday night at 8pm and I would love to see everyone there! We will also be set up at the local author table as much as we can. The last couple of years, that has been in teh atrium just outside the dealer’s room, but I heard a rumor that it might actually be ~in~ the dealer’s room this year, but I haven’t seen a map as yet, so I cannot say for sure. Either way, we will be there as much as we can, but we do like to share so there could be times when we are elsewhere in teh convention, please feel free to stop and say hello.

Now onto the REALLY good stuff!

So, the rough draft of the Fifth key is done. I’ve handed it off to my editor and am awaiting feedback so I can get into revising and cleaning it up for test readers. At this point we are well on schedule for an April release. The final word count, pre-editing is 147,700(ish), which is about 50,000 more than the average for all of the first four books.

I know I mention word count a lot and I don’t mean to dwell on it, but it is just kind of impressive to me that so much can be produced in so little time (about 97,000 in the past 40 days). Now we will see how many of them are of value to the story. A typical editing cycle will change the word count by 10-20% (in either direction, but usually bringing it down). We’ll see, but I for one, am very glad to have the story out of my head. It took a couple unexpected turns toward the end, and a couple things that I felt pretty strongly about all along did not come to pass. They just didn’t seem to fit any longer once I got to that point in the story so I let organic growth take hold.

That said, I am pretty happy with the overall outcome of things. I have my doubts about a couple scenes/chapters, but we’ll see what happens during editing and review. Suffice to say that both the future, and Kalijor, were irrevocably changed by the outcome of the story. There was some sad, a lot of happy (by the time it was over), and a few things happened that will allow for future stories, with different characters. I’m not saying I’ll never write for these characters again, but I know for a fact I have a lot of stories for other characters that need telling!

So, what’s next? Well, while editing and revisions proceed on the Fifth Key, I am going to turn my attention to the Art book, and the RPG. I think the art book will come together pretty quickly, but I need to spend some time collaborating with David doing layout and text around his amazing images. As for the RPG, well the mechanics seem to be working pretty well at this point. There are still some tweaks to be made, but it feels like the major mechanics are pretty solid. My next steps are to go through the book and fill out the prose sections, skill descriptions, and so forth. I need to change the spell system to bring it in line with the rest of the abilities and skills, and add a bunch of content such as equipment and utilities. There is a ton of work to do, but much of it is going to go pretty quickly. I am still hopeful that we can get the book into print by this coming summer but again, it will not be rushed. If it isn’t ready, it won’t go to press.

Around those projects, I have already started rewriting the story for next year’s event book, and the cover artwork has been assigned and is looking amazing! Once that is finished and ready for press, I will begin editing/revising the next Kalijor novel, which will be Daray’s origin story. The book is already written, but it needs a lot of tweaking to bring it in line with the finalized timeline for the main story arc. It probably needs a few more tweaks and changes as well, but I think it is in very good shape to be pulled together in the next 6-8 months without too much difficulty, even around everything else that is going on.

I know I’ve said this before, but I will say it again here, the next 10-12 books in the Kalijor universe are already written! They need tweaking and refining, to be sure, but there should be no trouble releasing a new novel every 6-12 months for the next few years! All of the characters that have passed through the main story arc will be receiving some of their own ‘screen time’ as it were, and I am very excited to share more of the world with you, the readers.

I also have plans to write a couple of other books using characters that have never been seen before, one involving deep space travel away from the rest of the Kalijor universe, and one involves a band of gypsy performers/pirates (these stories are still forming, so they will be a while in the making, but they are coming along). Additionally, I have several writing projects that have been co-written by friends of mine that we will be working hard at cleaning up and making presentable, so if you would like to see what happens in my mind outside of Kalijor, there could be opportunity for that in the not too distant future as well. J

Okay, I think that’s enough rambling from me, so I’m going to go veg for a bit. I hope you are all having an amazing day and I look forward to hanging out with you at the con!

End of Line…

MileHi Con 2012 Schedule

Okay, so I just got word from teh folks over at MileHi Con and I have several scheduled appearances:

Reading: Friday, October 19 @ 8pm in Mesa Verde A

What’s New in Gaming: Saturday, October 20 @ 10am in Wind River B

eBooks & Self Publishing: Saturday, October 20 @ 2pm in Mesa Verde A

Future of the Tablet: Sunday, October 21 @ 10am in Mesa Verde A

Playing With Participants: Sunday, October 21 @ 2pm in the Atrium

Venue info:

Hyatt Regency Hotel – Tech Center

7800 E. Tufts Ave.

Denver, CO

It doesn’t look like we have any time at the big kid’s autograph table, but we’ll be set up at the community/co-op author table (which sounds like it might be in the dealer’s room this year) as much as is humanly possible, and we’ll try to get some books on consignment with a couple of the vendors in the dealer’s room. I will release a map and any more details as soon as they become available. Sounds like the programs are going to print this weekend, so we should have final details next week.

So, I’m not sure what we’ll be playing at the ‘Playing with Participants’ portion of the con. Could be a board game, or an RPG, or anything, really. Maybe the Kalijor RPG? *ponders* Again, I’ll let you know as soon as I know, which could be at the event. *shrug*

Any suggestions on what I should read at a reading? Never done that one before… Should it be somethign from the first book? Start at the beginning? Or pick a fun excerpt from somewhere els, or another book entirely? Thoughts?

Okay, to work with me!

Here’s hoping you all have an awesome day, and I look forward to seeing you at MileHi Con!

Update and a Sale (two bits?)

Hello all you wonderful people out there!

I just wanted to let you know that I am still alive and the Kalijor machine is still in full swing here. I did ~Not~ finish the Fifth Key by the end of September, but I am very close to finishing now, and at 140,000+ words, this book is going to be quite a bit larger than the first four (all of which averaged 90-100k words). I think you’re really going to enjoy this one, folks! I have already got my editor working on the first part of the book as I finish up the manuscript, so we aren’t loosing any production time on this one even though writing is going a bit long.

On the RPG front, I have a huge list of things to add and change and I will be getting to that just as soon as I wrap up the Fifth Key and ship the rest off to editing. At that point it will be all about the RPG and the Art book. We should have the art book available for this holiday season, and I am hopeful that we can premier the RPG at GenCon 2013, but again, I’m not pushing it out the door if it isn’t ready, so we’ll see how that goes.

I’ve asigned cover art for the 2013 event book (The Trouble with Griffons), and I’ve got the inks back as of late last week. I have to say it’s the best one yet!

Lastly, there is a sale going on over at my publisher’s. Hop on over to The Kalijor Book Store and use coupon code: PLUMA to save 20% on your entire order. Offer valid through the end of October 5th.

That’s about it for now, so I’m going to get back to work. I’ll keep you all updated and resume regular updates/blogs once the fifth book is in the can.
