Fall Weather

What a great fall weather weekend in Northern Colorado. If it weren’t for the forest fires it would be perfect. Today will be a football/ writing day. First the Broncos, and then a visit with Croatoan. I’m early in the second book, and Tom Benton has a plan…..

The zombie genre is dead for now

I recently read an article that proposed that the Zombie genre is dead for now. The concept was that Zombies have been over-done in recent years. Too many novels in print and too many TV series and movies were made, and as a result, people have lost their flavor for a good Zombie scare. These things run in cycles I suppose, but what if someone reintroduced the Zombie theme through a series of novels in which the Zombie apocalypse had already ended. What if a few of the remaining humans were now immune to the virus that caused the Zombie outbreak. What if these immune humans developed supernatural abilities? And what if these super humans sought to control the remaining members of humanity by threatening another Zombie infection? And if one of the superhumans mated with a human and their offspring hated the superhumans and had special abilities of her own….. I like this idea.

I am in a Blake Crouch mood.

Thinking of venturing into his novel Recursion. If you’ve never read Blake Crouch you are missing a treat. He is the author of the Wayward Pines series. The books are better than the miniseries Fox put out a couple of years ago, but still worth a watch on Hulu. No one conjures better twists and turns than Crouch.

Colorado Wildfires.

A complete tragedy for those of us who love the outdoors. Thoughts and prayers to those affected. For those of us at a small distance, it turns out our face masks aren’t just protection from COVID.

Currently finishing a Novel titled – Hunted.

In my town, I have a favorite park. In the middle of the park is a small lake, with many benches that face the lake. It’s very peaceful. I had been in this park a while back with my grandson and noticed an old man sitting on a bench. He was watching the ducks on the lake. That night I dreamed of the man on the bench talking to a young woman. He was telling her his life story, or so it seemed. Something about the isolation of two people, alone, as the sun was setting made me wonder why the man wanted to talk to this young lady in particular. As is usually the case, an answer came and I began writing. HUNTED!

Richard Laymon

Richard Laymon (Author of The Traveling Vampire Show)

Richard Laymon is One of my all-time favorite writers. Richard Laymon had a way of making the bizarre seem normal. He was the master at writing about characters that the reader suspicions may be a more prevalent part of our world than we want to admit. Characters who not only think about their secret desires but act on them, often. Richard wrote several vampire stories (Stake & The Traveling Vampire Show) that are among my all-time favorites, but he also could describe the worst in humanity in times of crisis (Quake & Island). The works of Laymon are diverse to be sure, however, he consistently develops characters throughout all of his works that are deviant in their lusts. Or are they?  If you haven’t read Laymon, you are missing out on one of the true horror masters

The 5 horror books that Influenced my novel, Within The Fog.

I was a teenager when I heard about John Carpenter’s movie, The Fog for the first time. The idea of a horror film constructed on the premise of something evil lurking in a fog bank offered so much mystery and potential. I couldn’t wait to rent the VHS tape at Blockbuster. Then, begged my mom to rent the film for the very next Friday night. I loved the movie and remember thinking what a great concept the movie was built on. In fact, I began having all kinds of ideas about scary things that could emerge from a fog bank other than ghosts. A few years later I read the Stephen King novella The Mist. My take was of course that it was brilliant, as is every King work, but again I wondered what else could emerge from a bank of fog to scare the crap out of people. Through the years I read several other influential horror books related to this topic and finally an idea came forth. That idea eventually grew into my novel, Within the Fog. Below are the top 5 horror books that influenced my novel:

1-      Stephen King – The Mist
Stephen King. Enough said.

The Mist - Within The Fog Horror Book

2-      Dean Koontz – The Taking
A storm hits, power is lost, and humanity is in peril. Perfection.

The Taking - Within The Fog

3-      David Wellington – 13 Bullets
She’s the last vampire on earth. Briefly.

13 Bullets - Within The Fog

4-      Richard Matheson – I am Legend
Not the movie, the book. One of his best.

I Am Legend - Within The Fog

5-      Justin Cronin – The Passage
The government screwed up (again). Vampires are the result.

The Passage - Within The Fog Horror Book
