Brazen Folk Horror Check in

Beltane rolled in with storms, humidity, hot and cold fronts colliding, fires, droughts, floods, and even a sinkhole! Literal and metaphorical applies to all. Ruthann and Natasha each feel the energies collide and shift heavily on their retrospective parts of this big spinning rock. But we’re not spinning off it just yet; we implore you to harness the feral, fierce, and fiery energy and go with the unpredictable flow!
Five months in, and this year has been chaotic once again, but the Brazen duo are riding all the waves, creating a few of our own, and soaking up all the inspiration our brazen brains can handle and then some!
Natasha accidentally spilt some blood into a ritual on the last full moon of 2023, and we are certain it’s partially to blame for some of the shenanigans and general off-kilter framing of 2024. Never bleed a witch by accident!
While we haven’t posted as much here, we’ve been keeping followers up to date via our beautiful quarterly magazine #bebrazen since it launched last summer. Subscribe here to get it delivered digitally free upon release, or pick up the print edition from Amazon or directly from either Natasha or Ruthann. Please follow us on social media for readings, giveaways and other little morsels. Natasha recently hosted an impromptu giveaway on her socials — readers were asked to share their favourite mythical creature and why! Two winners picked up a stack of signed books from the Brazen Folk Horror and Clan Witch catalogue, along with art prints, bookmarks, stickers and pins! So don’t miss out—follow us everywhere.
The next edition will land in subscriber mailboxes in June with fresh content designed especially for you by Brazen Folk Horror, and we will be sharing more about Ruthann’s exciting upcoming journey from Texas to Glasgow! There may even be a chance for a double meet and greet! Trust us, you don’t want to miss a thing!

Brazen New Year: 2024

We have avoided forced ‘happy’ salutations this new year, especially when many folks worldwide struggle. Who needs to hear “be ‘happy’” when they can’t afford to be warm? We don’t know what’s going on in the individual lives of our highly valued Brazen Readers, so instead of forced cheer and platitudes, we want to send you our sincerest hope.
We hope that each of you has or finds peace, gratitude, and love in your lives—peace in a noisy, stress-filled, demanding, complicated, and war-torn world. We live in conflicting, demanding, and unforgiving times. We want peace for everyone. Sometimes, we must look for little ways to be grateful in a harsh world, and it’s not always easy to find them, but when we see one, the next spark is often right beside that, and in mindfulness, those things multiply. We hope you each find that spark, and your blessings fill you up and keep you warm in the cold. And love—this begins within oneself, and like peace and gratitude, putting love into the world and noticing the little glimmers has a ripple effect.
So, we do not wish you a ‘happy’ new year, but we do share our hope that you find and multiply peace, love, and gratitude in your lives and those of others whose paths entwine or cross with yours.
2023 was a particularly challenging year for many, us included. We’ve wrestled with health, family, work, and finding and keeping our footing while so much involving what we do spins and dissolves, leaving a force of will and absolute desire for the creative process behind.
Despite obstacles and the distance between us, our rare and precious collaborative partnership thrives, sometimes sidetracked of our intentions and that thief many know well: time. We’re staying the course, committed to our stories, and bursting with fresh plans and ideas for 2024 and beyond!
Like many, we feel slightly off-kilter, a bit off track in a crazy and unprecedented business climate. Logistics and financial concerns have also affected the world of writing and publishing, and we’re continuing to assess and plan our best paths forward.
Stay with us. We’re rolling with the waves. Brazen Folk Horror’s best is yet to come. We’re resilient, passionate, determined and more brazen by the day about our craft and are committed to producing only quality stories that will, hopefully, endure us to our loyal readers for years to come.
If you haven’t yet subscribed to our newsletter, join our flock to get all the delicious bits first. Book II in the Delevan Trilogy, The Delevan Diaries, releases very soon, with the conclusion to our contemporary gothic classic a little later in 2024!

And we have plans for an addition to our seductive and slightly sinister brand alongside exciting appearances at events and conventions throughout the year.

Hang on tight! We will make this year one to remember, and we’re fortunate to have your continued love and support!
Peace, love & gratitude,

Original or Copycat

Brazen Folk Horror strives for original content, and we take great pride in quality in all that we do. (We have grand designs for our bold brand and promise that if you keep with us; you haven’t seen anything yet.) For those reasons, we hold our cards close to our chests and keep most works in-house. Anything published that is not our direct design will be credited otherwise.
To accompany our literary work, we designed our website and have shared insightful articles into the development of our first novel, Delevan House, with our readership. We then thoughtfully and professionally developed our quarterly #bebrazen magazine, which launched Summer Solstice 2023. This is an expansion of a ‘newsletter’, but like everything else we do, we are “not like the others”.
We support all creators and are always approachable and grateful to our supporters. With those genuine supporters comes the other side. We disrespect blatant copycats, who are an embarrassing discredit to the creative arts.
We do not use AI to generate content.
We do not seek out ill-experienced writers or artists to take advantage of to bulk up ‘our work’ and expect them to ‘contribute’ for free (exposure)—all artists deserve to be paid.
Our content is designed by Brazen Folk Horror, specifically with the respect of readers in mind.
To our fellow creatives, you are worth more than exposure. Consider what that says about the publisher and their ‘respect’ of your hard work.
From Brazen Folk Horror like the crows over Badb, we see you.

Equinox Release
Since coming together with a ‘simple’ idea to collaborate and write a novel, Natasha and Ruthann have made that one task into a Brazen Beast. She rose from the waters like a ravenous, tortured Kelpie, baying to be more, so much more. Neither Natasha or Ruthann does anything by halves, and the brutal beautiful beast of a muse does not quiet.
While working on Delevan House, we frequently engaged readers with ‘The Making Of’ articles, here on Brazen Folk Horror. It became clear quickly, that the stories the characters of Badb Village had to share would not be confined to a single novel. We’re giving them three, and The Delevan Diaries will be with readers in winter.
Between books, readers are welcome and encouraged to join our newsletter list. No. We promise it’s not another generic, formulaic, flat newsletter that so many of us have hit our inboxes quickly to land in the trash. No, we are not like the others. Ours is bold, unique and, including updates from Ruthann in the U.S.A. and Natasha in Scotland, our quarterly is packed with articles on the craft and business of writing and the history, mythology, folklore and locations that inspire our fiction. Only newsletter subscribers can access the digital issue before the print publication goes live two weeks later. Only subscribers are automatically entered into our quarterly #BeBrazen prize draw.
#BeBrazen Autumn Equinox#BeBrazen: Autumn Equinox Edition will be with newsletter subscribers on September 23rd, then the print edition releases on October 7th.
Did you miss our debut issue of #BeBrazen? You can pick up a copy online or direct from Natasha or Ruthann.

Creativity Under a Blue Moon
On Wednesday, August 30th 2023, we’ll again be treated to the dynamic energies of a powerful “Blue Moon.”
The second of two full moons within one calendar month occurs every 2.7 years or so. This natural phenomenon is embraced and somewhat suspicious, depending on your belief or understanding. The Old English word belewe means to betray, as this extra moon is a betrayer in that it upsets the lunar cycles of some religious-based festivals and celebrations.
For many of us who are creatives, it holds significant value.
It’s a time of heightened self-awareness and expression, with a promise of enhanced intellect. It is a wonderful opportunity to experiment, take risks, and make all the wishes, with a better chance of having them come true!
The heavens stimulate inspiration. And who among us doesn’t need an extra jolt right about now as the seasons begin to shift?
Brazen Folk Horror embraces everything connected to the mysteries and seduction of the moon, and we look forward to the motivation, and, perhaps, a wee boost of empowerment as we continue working on Book II of The Delevan Trilogy.
In our stories, the moon, especially a blue one, plays a decisive role in the traditions and fates of our Badb village and its inhabitants.
We invite you to be open and fluid to the pull of this lunar event, but also everything you hope for and are capable of.
The magick is around and in all of us, so take time on Wednesday to look up and make a wish not only on a star but also on this special moon!
Natasha and Ruthann )O(

If you’re feeling extra creative and want to indulge in some self-care, this is a lovely recipe for Blue Moon Milk to help set a reflective mood and contribute to a peaceful rest.
