An Author’s Golden Elixir
I’d been fascinated by the life of my 4th great grandmother, Dicey Langston, for nearly two decades before deciding to write a book about her life. Her story was the first fiction novel I ever wrote. It hooked me, reeled me into the power of fiction and the golden elixir of story. Over the next few years, I wrote at least nine more novels, eventually tutoring with editors to further perfect my craft.
Writing fiction was a part of my “hero’s journey” as an author. I traveled to other worlds an...

Living in the Light Doesn’t Mean Ignoring the Darkness
A wise man gave me some advice when I was about 16-17 years old. “Continue to look for the good,” he said. I have tried to do that throughout my life – to look for the good in people, to give them the benefit of the doubt, to surround myself with things that are uplifting and inspirational and steer clear of things that are degrading or depressing.
I’ve enjoyed this somewhat naive way of living for fifty years, but every once in a while the darkness rears its head, gets up in my face, and I’m...

What Individual Rights Really Mean
Have you noticed a quest to normalize every bizarre, sick behavior anyone might like to indulge in? Making huge hoopla and enacting regulationsto protect whatever minuscule minority might initially like to engage in this behavior until curiosity seekers and social-hypochondriacs claim they too have a propensity for this popular “label”?
In my opinion, the agenda is to create more minorities. Minorities get special privileges and money in this country, if you hadn’t noticed. They also get to m...

A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with Hope
A journey of a thousand miles begins with HOPE. But what if you’ve lost hope? You feel stuck, sad, maybe depressed. 6 years ago I had lost all hope in an important area of my life.
I noticed some verses in the Bible about Jesus being the resurrection and the life. I caught hold on the idea that Jesus could resurrect this dead thing. It gave me HOPE… and with hope, I set my feet on a path that led to something beautiful and wonderful.
It didn’t happen in the way I expected or with the people o...

People Or Puppets: Dangers of Social Media
I sat down next to my husband on the couch after dinner the other night. He was fiddling with his phone, and I leaned over to snuggle on him. I caught a glimpse of his Facebook feed. As he scrolled through posts — liking things, commenting on things — I noticed something significant about his feed. It looked a lot different than mine.
His was filled with political posts, whistle-blowing articles, cop videos, military-related items, funny rants, what’s happening in Europe, etc. My feed has a f...

Thrive Again: Recognize Whether You’re Being Used
In relationships, there are often those who feel entitled (USERS) and those who are so kind-hearted they have no clear boundaries and don’t know how to say “no.”
People who are lazy and feel the world owes them something tend to select relationship partners who are kind-hearted, hard-working, giving and boundary-less (OVER-PRODUCERS). In the end, the USERbecomes helplessly enabled and the OVER-PRODUCER endsup used, crushed, and depleted.
Should anOver-Producerdecide to break free of the abusi...
Put Your Oxygen Mask On, America!
If a mom never took time for self-care and constantly spent her strength on her career, volunteering, saying “yes” to everything asked of her until she was depleted, ragged and worn and she had no time to enjoy her life or children, we’d tell her she’s killing herself. That she needs to put her oxygen mask on herself first.
Why do we expect our nation to
