The French 75
When my friends Patty and Lauren came over for dinner last week, they brought the ingredients to make a cocktail. One of those ingredients--a simple syrup--spilled all over Patty's bag in transit, but let's not focus on that. Instead, let's focus on the e-mail exchange that I had with Patty yesterday about the drink that she made.

Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe
Here are your tools--black pepper, spaghetti, water, salt, butter and cheese--now make something delicious. Ok? Go.
Maybe it's because these ingredients are so unglamorous that I shied away from spaghetti cacio e pepe for so long. Sure, it's a classic Italian spaghetti dish, but I've always favored the ones with garlic and anchovies (see my Weary Traveler's Spaghetti, for example) over this one made with cheese and black pepper, regardless of how much my friends rave over it.

Delivered!
Well, folks, today was the big day. At 9:30 AM I met with Lizzie, my constant companion and photographer over the past year, so she could hand over the discs with all of her pictures and the match prints (hard copies) for me to deliver, along with my manuscript, to my publisher, Artisan Books. And so it was that after we sipped cappuccino (Lizzie) and iced coffee (me) and Brendan the barrista kindly snapped that photo you see above, I journeyed south on 6th Avenue down to Houston, over to Varick and up the elevator to my publisher to hand things over.

The Most Michael Pollan-ish Plate of Food in New York
I've been meaning to do this post for a while, because I really believe in it.
Like many of you, I'm a fan of Michael Pollan, his book "The Omnivore's Dilemma" (which I wrote about here) and his useful and helpful food rules. I'm also a big fan of Maury Rubin's City Bakery on 18th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. How are these two things related? Let me explain.

Watch Me Eat My First-Ever Hot Cross Bun LIVE Today at 4 PM EST
Folks, it's the event of the season: I've never had a hot cross bun. I used to play the song on the recorder when I was 5, but that's about it. But today all that will change when I eat my very first hot cross bun (purchased at Amy's Bread) LIVE on the internet. Watch it live here or join the chat on my UStream show page by clicking here.

The Warm Chocolate Chip Cookie at Jacques Torres
Citizens of America, it is my duty to inform you about something unholy, something sinful that is going on in that wicked city known as New York. Deep in the bowels of a village known as "West" is a veritable Sodom & Gomorrah of chocolate whose creator, a Frenchman!, is trying to tempt our children into evil with a contraption known as the "cookie warmer." This sick device results in the dangerous, corrupting specimen you see above!

Italian Plum Oatmeal
The idea of a natural sweetener isn't a concept that resonates particularly well with my family. "Can you pass the Equal?" "Is there a Splenda?" These are words you will hear often if you ever eat with my mother or grandmother. And when I put that brown "raw" sugar packet in my coffee? I may get scolded with: "Why do you have to use sugar? It's fattening!"
