Someone's In The Kitchen With...Doug Quint & Bryan Petroff (from The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck)

Doug burst out laughing when I told him that he and Bryan, of the world famous Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, were my first celebrity guests on "Someone's In The Kitchen With...." And though his laughter was pretty sincere, you've got to admit: Doug and Bryan have made it pretty big. They have a book in the works, a new store opening up, not to mention their appearances on Rachael Ray and Andrew Zimmern. Here, in this chatty podcast, we cover everything from what it's like to drive a big gay ice cream truck around New York City to the truck's significance in the gay rights movement. (Also: the night that I cooked them dinner.) Thanks to Doug & Bryan for trekking all the way here on their day off!

Previous Episodes: Cara Eisenpress & Phoebe Lapine, Emeric Harney, Rachel Wharton.

Oatmeal with Ginger, Coconut Milk and Lime

IMG_3535

It's easy to innovate when you're working with a set formula. Oatmeal has a set formula. Bring 1 and 3/4 cups water (or milk) to a boil, add a pinch of salt, add your rolled oats, lower to a simmer, stir and cook until your oatmeal's absorbed most of the liquid. Then sweeten with a little brown sugar, syrup or honey and you've got oatmeal.

Spring Asparagus with Citrus, Whipped Ricotta and Cream Cheese

This is a sponsored review from BlogHer and Kraft.

When BlogHer approached me and asked if I wanted to develop recipes for their "Real Women of Philadelphia" campaign, I had three immediate reactions: 1. I'm not a woman; 2. I'm not from Philadelphia; and 3. Me? Develop recipes? How flattering. I'm going to say yes!

Where To Go and What To Eat in New Orleans?

commanders-1.jpeg

This Friday I'm heading to New Orleans on a trip sponsored by the Louisiana Seafood Board, my first time there since I performed with my college improv comedy troupe at Tulane (where we slept on a frat house floor) and certainly the first time I've been there as a real eater. Many of the meals on the trip are already planned--we're going to Bistro Maison de Ville, GW Fins, Commander's Palace, Hansen's Sno-Bliz and Drago's Seafood Restaurant--but for those meals where we get to eat on our own, I'd love your advice. Where should we go? (I already know about August, Cochon and Cafe du Monde. I definitely plan to try at least 2 of those 3.) Also: for any free time that we have, what are your favorite things to do that aren't food related in New Orleans? I hear there's an albino alligator at the zoo. Thanks for your help!

A Tiki Banner

I'm really digging this month's banner by Lindy Groening. Thanks to her for dreaming it up and thanks to Raphael Brion for nailing it on to the top of the page. (He also updated the banner gallery, which you should check out here.)

Casseroles, Atlanta

IMG_0398

It's not every day that you have a friend go into the food business, which is why I was so excited and exhilarated when my friend Hunter Hanger, the most charming Southerner that I know (when I just called him he answered: "As I live and breathe, if it isn't Adam Roberts"), was opening up a food joint with his friends Betsy and John. But not just any food joint; a food joint dedicated to CASSEROLES. The inspiration came when Betsy's mother was having surgery and "a dear friend from Macon" (to use Hunter's phrasing) brought her a casserole from a casserole shop there. The gesture was so loving and kind that it really stuck with Betsy and when Betsy mentioned it to Hunter, they both realized that "nothing like that exists in Atlanta."

Someone's In The Kitchen With...Cara Eisenpress & Phoebe Lapine (from "Big Girls, Small Kitchen")

On this, the third episode of "Someone's In The Kitchen With..." (though really the second official episode, since episode 1 had major technical issues), I play host to Cara Eisenpress & Phoebe Lapine from "Big Girls, Small Kitchen" who have a new cookbook out called, fittingly enough, "In The Small Kitchen." Watch as the "girls" teach me how to make and plate sweet pea crostini while we kibbitz about cookbook writing, The Barefoot Contessa (they were on an episode of the show!), catering parties, and how to collaborate on a cookbook without killing your co-author. Also: if you have happen to be in L.A., Cara and Phoebe are hosting a book party this Thursday (June 2nd) at the Thompson Beverly Hills Rooftop from 7 PM to 10 PM. RSVP here. Oh, and don't miss their recipe for Noodles with Spicy Peanut Sauce which I blogged about in the post below.

Noodles with Spicy Peanut Sauce

IMG_3423

Meet your new favorite weeknight dinner. It asks only a few things of you: that you have a cluster of esoteric ingredients on hand (chili paste, rice vinegar, toasted sesame oil), and also a few familiar ones (ginger, soy sauce, peanut butter). It asks you to boil water and to blend things up in your blender. But approximately 20 minutes after you start, you'll have the plate of food that you see above and, on a hot summer's eve, you'll find that very satisfying.

The Raw Rhubarb Daiquiri

IMG_3420

You can taste great food in your head long after you first experience it. That's the case for me and the rhubarb cocktail I drank at Franny's in 2009. Most rhubarb drinks have a cooked quality to them; the rhubarb is generally poached in a sugar syrup. The Franny's rhubarb drink (which, apparently, is made with Aperol) is nothing like that. The rhubarb flavor (which comes from juicing rhubarb raw) is intense and sharp and the cocktail, as a whole, is incredibly bracing. It's the kind of drink that makes you sit up in your seat, alert and ready for dinner.
