Leaning back, the Watcher twisted to take his shot in the dark, blasting another 12-gauge slug from his short-barrelled Remington shotgun; curses in the darkness behind them accompanied the shriek of panicked horses.

Distressed by the anguished cries of their pursuers’ mounts, Rose pressed her face against Oro’s sweating neck, threading her other hand into his pale mane to cling for dear life…

They rippled on the wind, iridescent banners in the sky, terrible and beautiful; in the pale light of the Travail, they glowed as they flowed through the smoke, creatures of myth and magic made real...

The Watcher raised his shotgun to the smaller serpent, slinging lead to tear him from the sky. Pinwheeling, it spun to earth, bleeding, as the Watcher rolled to evade its partner.

Barreling past the Watcher, the larger snake skidded into the greenbriar. Coiling to strike, the Feathered Serpent’s shining scales gleamed, armor for an emerald god rising from the ashes of antiquity.

Awestruck with terror, Rose fell to her knees: “Quetzalcoatl!”
