Riotous noise rocked the Arena as the Watcher hit his fists together, shaking out every muscle. Mr. Megaphone boomed: 

"In this Corner…" 

Do it so everyone can get paid 

"…weighing in at approximately one hundred and eighty pounds -"

Just throw the fight, get it done, and make your exit—

"…topping out at a whopping five-foot-three—"

What she doesn't see doesn't count

"Coming to you live from Snake Farm, Texas, The Wonder Under-Dog of the Evening—the Comal County Crusher!" 

Von Helm vaulted through the gate and into the centre of the Squared Circle, pumping his fist into the air, whipping the crowd into a frenzy. A grin of pure joy lit his face as he raced around the ring, and his joy spilled over into the crowd. The Watcher grunted to himself:

He's the classic Babyface—the Hero, the guy everybody adores. 

Mr. Megaphone lifted his instrument once more: "And in this Corner…"

Grinning, a feather-bedecked Joey entered the Arena, leading the Watcher on his chain.

"…weighing in at approximately two hundred and ninety pounds…"

and then there's me.

A howl of boos rose as bricks and bottles flew through the air; 

"…six feet deep…"

The ultimate Heel, the Anti-Hero, the man you love to hate…

"…hailing from parts unknown, the Rootin' Tootin' Lucha-Lootin' Texas Outlaw—LoneStar Libre!"

DREARY DAYS and TIME CHANGE HAZE

At last the apocalypse is upon us; the time change occurred, and with it, a cold front came through. But this is not a good ol’ rip-roaring Blue Norther, with death-defying storms - instead, it is an overcast dreary haze, falling just short of enough Gothic atmospherics to make it exciting.

I did see a leaf turn red, a lovely Virginia Creeper clinging for dear life. That’s it. That’s fall in Texas. It happened yesterday.

Having been roasted for the better part of a year, my household Texans are bundling up, breaking out sweaters and heavy coats to brave the 57 degree weather. Used to being blasted by sunbeams all day long, we now not only find ourselves cold but also in the early dark, a gift from overcast skies and the Federal Gubmint.

As a result, we have all turned into grumpy Bears, seeking hibernation.

The entire Fambly wakes up at GawdAwful O’Clock, expecting to be late to everything; slamming coffee all day, we try to stay awake, fighting off the sleepies that occur when that naturally overcast gray light is allowed into the house. Fighting a losing battle against dozing, we overcaffeinate, then turn around to find that the sun has gone down early on all our plans to fix fence…

and now we can’t sleep.

This has lead to fury of writing on my part - I’m all too happy to work off the jitters all night, in exchange for my next manuscript, but it comes at a cost of me falling asleep in the middle of the day, coffee cup mug bowl pot still in my twitching hands. But the others, not living an #AuthorLife, are required to function on a schedule. This has resulted in grumbling and general paranoia about Tyrants’ Insistent Meddling Extirpating the Natural Order of Things.*

And so we wait, hands trembling from overdoses of coffee and eyes twitching from a lack of sleep, waiting for the Universe to right itself. With everything turned upside down in this crazy world, one would think Time itself would be off the menu of Things You Muckup Egregiously.* But no, between that, and the Dankness of Fall In Texas, we blink owlishly through dreary days and time change haze…

fortunately, this is Texas; in a couple of days, we’ll move on to the excitement of secondary Tornado Season;

that’ll wake us up for sure.

*TYME goes in a book too. I just made that acronym up, and I’m quite proud of it.

To their south, a darkgash faintly appeared against the pale soil—a gaping, steep-sided hole inthe earth, water line approximately fifteen feet below the slick edge.Giving the lookout call, Dominic swept his right arm down and towardsthe hazard; each rider behind him echoed the motion in turn to alert thenext rider down the line. Any horses or riders slipping in would surelydrown, unable to climb back out the steep bank.
