She could feel the evil that had been on the blade, too. Luckily it had shriveled up and died from the blasts of energy coming from the Bells, leaving behind an ugly weal of cauterized flesh that promised to make for one hell of a scar on her leg, assuming she got out of this alive. Which she might not, because the cultist with the sword was now getting up. And retrieving her blade, dammit.

Talking never hurts, Janet thought. “You know, you look pretty bad, right now,” she said. It wasn’t a lie. Even to mundane eyes the cultist seemed almost grey-skinned, and to Janet’s increasingly esoteric senses the woman was carrying around an agitated, and hopefully collapsing, collection of tubes of malevolent energies. “How about you give yourself up? Maybe we can fix you.”

“There’s nothing wrong with me,” said the cultist as she advanced. “You’re the messed-up ones. We’re fine.”

“Really?” said Janet as she tried to scrabble back. Every little bit helped. “Because I can hear a bell without puking up evil. How about you?”

The cultist was moving slow, but the sword was only wavering a little, dammit. “Yeah? Well, I can go outside your walls without getting ripped apart. How about you?”

Did Short Story sampler work today!

That’s the short story sampler associated with the TALES FROM THE FERMI RESOLUTION Kickstarter (Now in print! Get your copy today!) Gotta get that cleared out of my in-box. Basically, at this stage it’s going to be doing some editing of the finished tales, finishing the unfinished story, and getting it out to backers. Once that’s done, pretty much so is the Kickstarter. The goal is to finish it up by the end of the month…

The WANDAVISION Honest Trailer. (Spoilers)

Something odd about this WANDAVISION Honest Trailer: did they dislike it, or like it? They obviously didn’t love it, but some of the punches seemed like they had been pulled, a little. Like they were trying to make it look like they were being rough on the flick, while letting the show down easy.

Or maybe not. I might be imagining it. Heavy spoilers in the video, by the way.

The final THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER trailer.

I am legit looking forward to THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER. I’m kind of grooving to the fact that they don’t much like each other, but they know that Cap was best friends to both of them so they have this weird obligation to get along. I kind of hope that they end the run acting… pretty much the same way towards each other. Guess we’ll see!

Blue Sally!

Blue Sally’s called that because she’s got woad tattoos over every inch of her body. How do I know this? Never you mind. She was real happy to see me, too. “You get three words before I throw you out,” she said, not looking up from the papers on her desk. “And don’t think about them, either.”

I shut the door behind me and Bub. “Werewolf,” I said.

That’s a word people notice in this town, let me tell you. Suddenly she was looking right at me. “What? Here?”

“Yup,” I said, and nothing more.

It took Sally a second before she figured it out. “Don’t make me smack you, Zed. Spill it.” She hopped down from her chair. “And how do you know?”

I looked down at her. “You sure you want an answer to that? I ain’t lying, though. You got a werewolf, it was at the bar, and it’s here to kill somebody.”

“You seem pretty calm about it,” Sally said.

“I ain’t the target,” I replied.

Taking the day off.

As in, I am taking my phone and getting into the car and going somewhere else. My wife’s taking ‘unpaid teacher’s aide duty’ today. I have no idea where I’m going, except that it’s not gonna be here.

SpaceX grinds satellite deployment.

They launched Falcon 9 to put another sixty satellites in orbit for SpaceX’s full-coverage internet Starlink project. Fun fact: there’s a thousand up there by now (out of a projected forty thousand). Another fun fact: that’s the ninth time the company used that booster.

I may be happier about this than the ongoing work on a no-fooling rocketship. The tests of their heavy rockets are genuinely exciting and fascinating, yes. No argument there. But this stuff with the Falcons is what’s going to end up making space a hell of a lot cheaper to exploit. And I’m very happy that somebody’s doing the tedious work involved.

The ‘FOUR DAYS UNTIL THE SNYDER CUT’ JUSTICE LEAGUE trailer.

I understand your skepticism, or outright disbelief. And I cannot say that such attitudes are unjustified. They are justified: DC movies have an uneven track record, at best. Any sensible person would vote the odds. So I do not scorn contrary opinions.

I merely do not care, because: Omega Beams.

Thursday.

Tweet of the Day, You May Actually Care About This Grammy Award edition.

It was won by a guy in Weird Al’s band.

I'm so incredibly happy and proud to say that Jim "Kimo" West, my amazingly talented friend who has played guitar in my band for nearly 40 years, has just won his first Grammy (for Best New Age Album). Congratulations, @westernmost!

More Guitar Stories, and I’ve heard Jim West play in person. He’s a Righteous Dude.
