RIP, Fred Ward.

It will come to no surprise to anyone that Tom Vargas owes a Hell of a lot to H. Philip Lovecraft, and CAST A DEADLY SPELL. And then there was TREMORS, which is one the greatest Atomic Horror flicks of all time and I will fight anybody in this bar who dares besmirch its good name. And, oh yeah, there was that flick THE RIGHT STUFF. That Fred Ward, he was a good guy to see, up there on the big screen. My condolences to his family and loved ones*.

TINSEL RAIN Update: Chapters 20-23 edited.

One chapter left! And the Epilogue. After that, I just have to write a bunch of introductions, dedications, and so forth – assuming that we don’t do another pass on TINSEL RAIN. Not sure. It’d definitely go more quickly, this time.

As for publication schedule: Kickstarter backers get the digital version first. Once those are distributed, TINSEL RAIN will go to KDP, and we’ll start the process of publishing the KU and paperback versions. Not in time for Balticon, alas. Such is life; and, honestly, we are way ahead of our planned publication schedule anyway. I need to remind myself of that.

Movie of the Week: OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL.

I thought I’d give OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL a whirl, seeing as it’s a Sam Raimi flick that I actually haven’t seen. Not sure why, really. Probably because it was called OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL.

In the Mail: GURPS GIRL GENIUS.

I said it best on Twitter, really:

My copy of GURPS GIRL GENIUS was printed in Belgium, too, which was a relief. And I hate that this has to be a consideration, these days. It should be fully available in a few days. But I get it now!

‘Sabotage.’

Can’t remember if I did this this year, but ZOMG I FORGOT TO ADD THIS. And it works as a meta joke on two levels!

TINSEL RAIN Edits: Chapter 19.

Only one chapter, because I had to add some details to a particular character to make her work better. Well, I didn’t have to, but my editor made the suggestion and when she pointed it out to me I decided I agreed. Which is how about 90% of these suggestions go. Maybe 95%. I’m not really prone to temper tantrums over the inviolability of my deathless prose.

Still have two more from the current batch to do, then I just need to get the last three and the epilogue. Already have the book cover percolating away… shoot. I’m about to publish another novel! Huh.

05/12/22 Snippet, HERO OF THE REVOLUTION.

You should see the other guy.

“I’m sorry, Angel Vadriel,” the Throne told me at the observation post. “Your spare body was misfiled.”

Both Heaven and Hell maintain observation posts on the mortal plane of existence, ostensibly to keep an eye on each other but really to facilitate the transfer of select resources to our own planes of existence. Demons do so love their addictive substances — and, to be honest about it, so do angels. It’s just that being addicted to music or poetry is much easier on ourselves and others than either alcohol or cocaine.

We also use the posts to communicate more easily with our homes, which is why I was calling up to have my spare body prepared. Only it wasn’t there. Given that the current one I was in had a pronounced limp, a slowly-inflating chest, and an extremely loose head, I was not pleased to get this news.

Christopher Walken to be Emperor Shaddam IV for DUNE PART TWO.

Yeah.

Denis Villeneuve is adding another high-profile talent to an already-loaded cast as sources tell Deadline Christopher Walken is set to play the Emperor in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Dune: Part Two. Walken joins the all-star ensemble that includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya and Josh Brolin, who are expected to reprise their roles, as well Florence Pugh and Austin Butler, who were also recently announced. Villeneuve is back to write, direct and produce.

I’m not saying no. I’m just saying, ‘Huh.’ Because that’ll be something to see. And probably all too short.

Via @UrsulaV, and as comments there points out…

The ‘Great. My kid may want to watch this’ RESIDENT EVIL Netflix trailer.

I’m not sure if I want him to. I mean, he’s only fifteen.

…what? No, it’s not that he’s too young to play gory video games. The kid’s got a half-dozen of the Resident Evil games already, because he likes horror video games and his grades are fine. No, it’s that fifteen is too young to learn that movies made from one of your favorite video games default to sucking. I’d like him to remain emotionally ignorant of that unfortunate truth for a little while longer.
