10/05/2022 Update, GHOSTS ON AN ALIEN WIND: 61968/80000.

Yeah, I stayed up late to make wordcount. I have to get this under control. GHOSTS ON AN ALIEN WIND has to be in draft form this month. No ifs, ands, or buts.

Movie of the Week: John Carpenter’s THE THING.

I picked THE THING because Eldest Son needed some experience watching gory movies on the screen before deciding whether or not to catch a horror flick tomorrow. You can’t go wrong with the classics, right? — He found it very entertaining, too. Which means we’re probably going to go see SMILE, after all*.

*Which I wasn’t gonna catch, but he wants to see it and I can’t just drop him off to go see an R-rated movie by himself. It’s apparently forbidden until he’s 18, or some other nonsense. I mean, have the ratings boards seen the video games kids play today?

The ATOMIC ROBO AND THE VENGEFUL DEAD Hardcover Kickstarter.

There was another Kickstarter that dropped today, called ATOMIC ROBO AND THE VENGEFUL DEAD HARDCOVER EDITION. Tesladyne described it as follows: “wherein the robot punches some vampires.” Having read it, I can readily agree that this is what the story is about. If you’re into that sort of thing, it’s a thing worth backing*.

*I am into that sort of thing.

The SECRET WORLD TTRPG Kickstarter is live! And I regret nothing!

Nothing, you hear me?!? Nothing!

PS: By the way, it would be really cool if everybody in the world bought my books, now. I know, I know, it would always be really cool – but right now there is perhaps a little urgency involved.

The unique frustration of Goth Chicken.

There’s a sketch in here. I can see it. I just can’t translate it into something my fingers can do.

Nothing says Halloween like a vulture perching on a lamp post. Or, as my wife likes to call them, 'goth chickens.' pic.twitter.com/grrPM2vHQF

I’m hoping Photoshop will help, but I’m not confident.

…I can explain.

It’s actually not that complicated. My wife was checking to see if there was a new book out. There was not. But there was the Curvy Cryptids Monster Manual and Adventure!- 5e D&D Compatible Game Book!, and the concept sung to something in my soul. Specifically, the part of my soul that is contemplating telling our DM that this should be our next adventure before Spelljammer. Just to see his expression.

The book itself is very well put together, too. Good-quality glossy paper and a nice layout. Worth picking up, if you’re into this sort of thing.

10/03/2022 Update, GHOSTS ON AN ALIEN WIND revisions: 60,700/80,000.

Right now, I’m just trying to tie all the threads together, pull on them, and see if a book forms. I rather hope that it will. I’m also rather aware that I’ve not done nearly enough to describe the planet our heroine is on. I really should have been doing that throughout the book…

One nice thing about flying to Luxor Base is that you almost don’t have to navigate at all. All you have to do is spot the statues, and aim for a spot between them. You barely need the homing beacon, although I made sure that I was properly receiving its signal. You always need to take extra precautions on a dead world — particularly when it was murdered.

The statues I was aiming for were seven hundred high and carved out of the local stone: one man and one woman, facing each other, each with one hand triumphantly raised to the sky, and the other pointing to the ground. I do mean ‘man and woman,’ too: some of the species we’ve exhumed out here don’t look anything like us, but the One-Eighteeners were pretty damned close. If you squinted, you could almost believe that they were just odd-looking humans.

Or maybe not. Something had carved deep furrows into the faces of the statues, making it impossible to tell what their features were originally like. We know almost nothing about whatever it was that turned the Confederation into the Tomb Worlds, but judging from the rubble we’re pretty sure it hated every sapient creature in it with a monomaniacal passion.

Now here we were, camping in the ruins, all the while wondering whether one day it’ll be our turn. We try not to think about it. And we really try not to think about how we’re not thinking about it.

Busted my 2022 goal for Amazon sales with three months to spare!

…Clearly I needed a higher goal in the first place. I had taken last year’s sales, and increased them by 50%: I decided that was a reasonable number to aim at. But things have been going very well for the last four months, so now I have a new number to aim for.

So… buy my books!

Moe Lane

PS: There’s this weird taboo about how much you should talk about your sales, or any sales, is there? I’m not sure if it’s based on humility, or on the fear that you’ll look like a goofus if people found out how much you really made a year. It’d destroy the writer’s mystique, or some nonsense like that…
