Book of the Week: The Most Extreme Crueltie and Revenge of Shylock of Venice.

It probably says something about me that Thomas Brookside’s The Most Extreme Crueltie and Revenge of Shylock of Venice is what I consider to be suitable light reading in between helping with stuff at a wedding. I make no apologies for this, mind you. I am comfortable in my own skin.

Tweet-thread of the Day, Behold The Righteous Scorn Of @iowahawkblog edition.

And well should he scorn. Grok may have covered itself in something in this thread, but it was hardly glory. Each post in that thread is funnier than the previous one.

Wedding (not mine) weekend.

I’d have mentioned it yesterday, but we had site troubles. Anyway, my sister-in-law’s getting married this weekend. My part of it is mostly going to be hanging around while prep is going on and mucking about with my phone – this has been explicitly cleared with all and sundry, which is nice – so while posting won’t go away, it’ll be fairly erratic. Enjoy your weekend!

Worked on something today.

It might go somewhere, it might not. If it doesn’t, it’ll end up here. If it does, it’ll end up somewhere else.

Yeah, I know, this is really vague. But it’d be kind of a cool thing if it worked out, and I don’t want to jinx it by talking too specifically about it. So this is as specific as I can realistically get.

The ‘Look, we had a budget, okay?’ RED SONJA trailer.

Yeah, Alyssa, Queen of Raccoons has a point, here. RED SONJA does give off ‘budget mid-2000s made for TV movie’ vibes. …This is not necessarily a deal-breaker for me. I kind of miss B movies, honestly. I’m not saying that it won’t suck, just that I don’t want it to.

‘Walking on Broken Glass.’

I feel that – and I in no way mean this as an insult – that Annie Lennox needs her own dedicated space on the Hot/Crazy Matrix.

So, I spent forty minutes on the phone confirming a reservation tonight.

Because Google decided to eat the email confirming that my wife and I had a hotel room for the wedding we’re going to this weekend. And I mean eat it. This has been happening more and more, lately. Anyway, I had to frantically track down the phone number, get a busy signal, find the main line, navigate the computer menu, and wait on hold for a while until I could talk to the nice man in India who was able to confirm that everything was fine, and send me a new confirmation email.

…So, how was your evening?

07/09/2025 Snippet, BRAVING THE MALSTORM.

Serpent men!

“Good to know.” Zeke put his carpetbag on the top bunk. “The restaurant car’s closed, but I’m told there’s usually sandwiches for the overnight. You’ll need… about fifteen minutes, right?”

“That should do.” Zeke nodded, and left. I thought about stopping him long enough to ask for a sandwich of my very own, but I doubted they had any mice ones. It’s an acquired taste, and most people chose not to acquire it. I’d say ‘more for me,’ but that was the problem, wasn’t it? There were no mice sandwiches at all.

Right about then I decided I was dithering (skin-swapping isn’t painful, but it makes you feel itchy for a few days afterward). There was no point putting it off, so I unzipped the body bag to see what I was going to look like in a few minutes. I always found it interesting, seeing myself as others would see me. A mirror just isn’t the same.

The new skin wasn’t bad. Human, about five feet, ten inches. Middle-aged, but healthy about it. Small tattoos on palm and one shoulder. Black hair and beard, with a couple of grey tufts. Regular features, almost actor-quality handsome. Skin was surprisingly untanned and soft, which surprised me. Most of our replacement skins come from military organ donors, usually from Deseret itself. Desereters were an outdoorsy bunch. This was a little weird.
