Author School Visits Website

I've just had my name added to a wonderful website that lists authors who do school visits by state. This is a fantastic resource for schools looking to bring in local authors. The advantage to this is that schools won't have to pay as much for the author's travel expenses and local authors love to support local schools! Click here for a link to the website. Since I live in Utah and the list is alphabetized by state, you have to scroll down a long way to find me!

The creator of this site, Kim Norman, is a pro at school visits. Click here to check out her personal website.

Job Shadow

A few days ago a sweet young girl in the neighborhood asked if I had time that weekend for her to interview me and job shadow me for a school project. Problem was, this was Friday afternoon, and I had finished my writing for the day and was planning on being gone all day Saturday. I had her come over for the interview then told her, "Here's what job shadowing me would look like. I'd be sitting in front of my computer. Some times I'd be typing, but most of the time I'd be staring off into space." Ah, the exciting, glamorous life of a writer.

Black Friday – 2010

I have my first Black Friday book signing coming up on November 26. I'll be at the BYU Bookstore in Provo, Utah from 12:00-2:00. (Actually I will probably arrive a bit after 12:00, as I'm leaving my in-laws' home in Idaho that morning.) I hear they've been playing my book trailer over the video system in the bookstore–too cool!

Utah SCBWI 2010 Fall Conference

I finally got to meet my wonderful agent, Steven Chudney, at the conference last week. After several years of communicating through email and telephone calls, I was so happy to meet him face to face. Steven came to Utah to speak at the SCBWI Fall conference held in Salt Lake City last week. He and I and Tess Hilmo–another local Chudney client–spoke on a panel. I never knew my agent was such a comedian! He had us all rolling in the aisles. He also conveyed some interesting and insightful information. He's very good at what he does, and after last weekend, I'm even more pleased that I have the opportunity to work with him.

Dixon Middle School

I spent yesterday with three of my local writing buddies at the fabulous Dixon Middle School. I met some great kids and had a lot of fun. I was very impressed with the prep work the kids and teachers did before we came. Authors were introduced at an assembly with a video presentation–the boy who introduced The Limit was awesome!

Here's my friend and fellow author, Sheila Nielson, answering a question in one of the assemblies. Kristen Chandler and Clint Johnson are in the background.

After the assemblies we ate lunch with some select students. I loved talking with the girls at my table. They were so cute and smart. (No boys sat at my table. If some boys had, I'm sure they would have been cute and smart too!)

Just look at the table decorations–amazing! Each table represented one of our books. They had to think hard to come up with something for The Limit, but they did a great job. Those are little credit cards and bank statements near the shoe.

After lunch we had book signings and writing workshops. It was a great day. Thanks, Dixon Middle School!

THE LIMIT BOOK TRAILER

I was so excited when I learned that Simon & Schuster had included a book trailer in their marketing plan for THE LIMIT. I think book trailers can be really cool when done right, and I knew that if I attempted to create one myself it would be a sloppy mess. I cannot describe how thrilled I was when I watched the trailer for the first time last Friday. It is truly one of the best trailers I've ever seen.

You must watch it now!

Post-Authorpalooza

What a great event! 40 authors and a large, steady stream of shoppers. It was so much fun to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. Thanks to everyone who stopped and let me talk to them about my new book.  This was my first official event where I had copies of THE LIMIT to sign, and I was thrilled about that.

I had great support from my family. Here I am, sitting next to my dad. One nephew, two sisters and one brother-in-law stand around me.
