Levees.org asks a question. The USACE chooses to non-respond.
In April 2025, Levees.org discovered in a FOIA request that the Army Corps of Engineers has not graded the New Orleans levee system for 5 years––something done routinely since 1959.
We gave this surprise information to Alex Lubben with The Advocate who questioned the Army Corps about it. We were not satisfied with the Army Corps’ explanation in Mr. Lubben’s story. So on August 21, 2025, we held a press conference.
We asked the Army Corps “does the system meet the requirements for 100-year protection that Congress tasked you to design and build?” The corps has not responded to our question.

Levees.org featured in The Advocate
In March of 2025, Levees.org filed a record request with the Army Corps of Engineers under the Freedom of Information Act.
We wanted to know the corps ratings for the FPA-East and West’s levee maintenance.
This is something the Army Corps of Engineers has done every year since 1959 – grade the local district’s maintenance.
We were shocked to find the corps has not issued a rating for five years. We gave the story to Alex Lubben as an exclusive. You can see the story here.

Founder Rosenthal’s OpEd on Levee Board Dysfunction featured in The Lens
Not many are familiar with the duties of a public board.
So founder Sandy Rosenthal penned an Opinion Piece to help the general public understand why the departing levee board chair’s penchant for spending time with staff was not a good thing.
And might even be dangerous since the board is responsible for operating the largest flood-protection system in the United States.
