Visconti Tarot – Major Arcana
Today the deck I grabbed from my bag was the Visconti Tarot, Major Arcana deck that my lovely Mr. gave me for my birthday back in May. I haven’t had much of a chance to play with this deck since it is a majors-only deck (whereas the deck linked above is the full deck, available from Llewellyn Worldwide). The cards are so amazingly beautiful though. I really do love them.
The card I pulled was The Star. She is standing on the ground, reaching for the stars. A star is lowering itself into her grasp.
I love the imagery of being grounded and reaching for the stars. It reminds me of the end of a piece I wrote, which closed; “I choose to raise my beautiful, strong, self-aware and loving children with their feet on the ground, and their hands reaching for the stars that glow in a future of their own making.”
Her cloak is adorned with stars, her dress with what appears to be torches. Yet in contrast to the bright and dazzling aspects of her garb, her dress is a calm blue, and she’s standing in a green landscape.
She dwarfs the mountains behind her. (On the shoulders of giants.)
Her face is dour though, or a little forlorn? I know that this is due to the stylistic renderings of the deck, but since this is the card I am reading, and this is the deck it is from, it bears mentioning.
I will take it as a caution; be grateful for the stars that are within reach. It doesn’t all have to be quite so onerous.
Lighten up!
Bless!

Tarot Sutra: An Intimate Guide to the Secret Language of Sex
It’s an evening draw this time. I reached in my bag of tricks and pulled out The Tarot Sutra. These cards are for sure from my back-up card pile that I tapped into when my faves were stolen a while back. And somewhere along the way I ditched the corresponding book, which was perhaps some kind of western ceremonial sex magick thing? I don’t remember it, so it must not have been that entertaining. (Nor informative.)
But the real reason I don’t love this deck it that, while the images are simple and reminiscent of the Rider-Waite deck (which is sweet and reminds me of my very first deck – an oversized Rider-Waite that that belonged to my older sister), the phrase under the images distracts me from reading the card in an intuitive way.
That said, I like the card. The sense of work well done. The fruits of labor. A moment of rest. Evening time after a long day.
In this card I see the time of year again. The burgeoning harvest. The hard work that brings food and herb to those that need it. How our local economy ties us so strongly to the seasons.
We are an agrarian culture here in Mendocino County. We know that money does actually grow on trees. Well, plants anyway.
I jest. But not really.
So I take this moment and breathe in, taking a breath with everyone else in this region, preparing for the bustle that will descend upon us all any moment now.
Threshold of Change, indeed.
(On that note, I think I need to replace my Rider-Waite deck. )
Bless!

Vertigo Tarot Deck Set 20th Anniversary Edition

Today I pull the two of disks – again! Or in this case, Two of Pentacles. The deck I’ve chosen today is the Vertigo, featuring the stellar and kind spooky artwork of Dave McKean, originally of The Sandman fame.
While it is the same card as I pulled yesterday, it is decidedly NOT the same card. This is why I love using different decks!
Today’s Two of Pentacles very much speaks to me of the change of season. I also brings to the surface the need for cultivation of that delicate balance between light and dark.
With a light square with a pentacle encased by other geometric shapes above, and a mirroring dark image below, it calls in the axiom of as above, so below. The light pentacle is pointed upward – matter to spirit, and the dark pointed down – spirit to matter. The essential dance between dream and manifestation.
Both light and dark are etched and splattered with gold.
There is a swirl of light and dark joining the two in the center. Solve.
I’m digging an alchemical vibe today.
Bless!
