I was thinking about mandalas this morning, and this is what became of it! I wove a paste paper by Susan Kristoferson and a sheet of batiked paper that I purchased at the Durango Arts Center.

I couldn’t resist affixing it to my window and seeing how it looked when illuminated.

There is a blogger that I follow on-line named Joel. He’s a working dad that designs the coolest projects for his own kiddos, which he shares with all of us on-line (templates and how-to’s included). His website is MadebyJoel.com and I think you’ll enjoy exploring his creations.

Here are a few of his designs in paper. Just click on the images and you’ll be transported to the projects on his site.

This is one of my favorite weavings! I find it so interesting how these weavings develop. I have to admit that I wasn’t terribly excited about the possibilities when I began this one. I chose the two papers, which I think work together nicely. But then what? I was thinking of ovals prior to choosing the papers, so I cut Cave Paper’s Layered Indigo Day into an oval. The floral paper (from Two Hands Paperie) was smaller and the size dictated that oval. Then I played around with the layout and came up with this. I think I would enjoy moon travel.

030star

Speaking of the moon and thinking of the sky, I love these magic window stars (one of the projects in my book, Playing With Paper ). They are quite simple to make, and the variations are endless.

Window-Stars-2

I found this image on-line (i.e. I didn’t make these), but can you see the possibilities? Wow! Attaching them to a window just brings them to life. Have you worked with kite paper? It is just like waxed paper, but it comes in colors and folds just like origami paper.

There are so many paper star projects (there could be a book). Just google paper star images and start creating.

Do you have any favorite books on folding paper?

All of this cutting of paper has me thinking about Elsa Mora, who runs several blogs that will entertain you for hours (watch out!). Her All About Papercutting is a how-to blog filled with patterns, supplies and her own artwork.

Art is a Way is her blog where she posts beautiful images of her work and the work of others.

Papercutting is a craft that has a long history in many countries, and there are many books on the subject. Do you have a favorite one that you would recommend?

This textured paper is made in Ghana from 100% Ghanaian mullberry pulp, grown in the rural areas around the city of Kumasi, in the Asanti Region. The papers are the result of Mary Hark‘s research, funded by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and is produced by Hark and Ghanaian colleagues working with a fledgling community of Ghanaian book art enthusiasts. The paper is woven with a silkscreen printed paper which is made and printed in India by Shizen Design.

This is the most elaborate holiday card I’ve received this year. It was created by Bruce Foster, one of the paper engineers who will be featured in my new book, Playing With Pop-Ups (to be published in May 2014).

Bruce is quite prolific, engineering books, games, and well you’ll get the idea by viewing the following images.

I received this piece of paper from Susan Mackin Dolan, a paper artist who lives near me. This particular piece was a test sheet for an edition she made as a fundraiser for Hand Papermaking Magazine. The paper is kozo with an iris border and I wove it with a sheet of Kristoferson Studio’s paste paper

A special gift broadside for Hand Papermaking Magazine by Eric Avery, Susan Mackin Dolan, and Mark Attwood

These sheets of paper traveled around the world to be printed. Read all about the inspiration behind this piece and purchase a copy here. Hand Papermaking is an exceptional journal in our field. In addition to publishing the magazine twice a year, they produce a quarterly newsletter and every two years they create an amazing limited edition portfolio featuring an aspect of the craft.

There are two other organizations devoted to the field of hand papermaking that are worth noting: The Friends of Dard Hunter is a national group which meets annually in a different city (the next meeting is in October 2014 in Boston), and the International Association of Papermakers and Paper Artists is an international organization which meets every two years (the next meeting is in July 2014 in Fabriano, Italy, an historic papermaking town where paper is still being made today).

This background paper is Cave Paper and reminds me of the time I spent in the Southwest  – my father was a nuclear physicist conducting research in Los Alamos, NM – we spent summers and a couple of semesters there when I was growing up. Doesn’t that paper look like clay? Cave Paper calls it terra cotta. I wove it with a piece of plastic “paper” that I got years ago from a paper vendor. The colors remind me of the New Mexico sky as well as the colorful painted buildings that blend so nicely with the adobe homes.

DCF 1.0
I think often of the Southwest during the holidays, because one of my fondest memories is of the luminaria which lined rooftops and driveways during the season. I went to a holiday party last night and lo and behold, the driveway was lined with luminaria: simple brown paper bags filled with 2″ of sand with real candles inside. They were lovely. They were luminous.

As was the moon this morning when I got up to go swimming, it was huge, full and surrounded by a patch of mist.

Vail Village has an annual tree lighting, and yesterday I facilitated a lantern making workshop at the library in Vail. About 40 people showed up to make lanterns, which they’ll bring to the tree lighting ceremony on December 22nd.

There are so many ways that paper and light have been used the enhance each other for centuries! I’ve written about some of these in my book Paper Illuminated. And the Collapsible Lantern project featured in the images above is featured in my book Playing With Paper.

Do you have a favorite way of working with or displaying paper and light? Please leave a comment below.

I love taking things apart and figuring out how they work. I also enjoy looking at things and deconstructing them in my mind. I destroyed the original design of this paper called Things with Wings by Reminiscence Papers, and there are numerous ways in which I could have put it back together. This intrigues me.

Check out the paper bags & boxes that Debra Glanz makes with the papers she designs.

As a child, I thought I would grow up to become an architect. The reverse side of this weaving is pretty interesting.

This weaving features three papers: golden leaves on emerald, from Graphic Products/Black Ink; my own handmade cotton paper with shredded money inclusions  – perhaps money does grow on trees; and crystal metal, which I purchased at Wet Paint.

This is my humble papermaking library. A few more papermaking books are on the shelf above, and one is on my nightstand. I have several shelves with other books about paper: paper lamps, paper engineering, paper crafts.

I remember purchasing my first book about papermaking when I was living in NYC. It was Washi, The World of Japanese Paper by Sukey Hughes. I was in my 20′s and had just stumbled upon the idea of committing my life to paper (while on a trip to Japan). I was living in NYC and somehow I found out about this book, located a private book dealer or shop (the details are fuzzy, as this was 25 years ago) and purchased this book for $100. I’m not sure I’ve spent that much money on a book since, but the book is incredible and worth every penny, with details about all of the types of paper that have been produced in Japan.

Shortly after that I learned about Tim Barrett and purchased his book, Japanese Papermaking. You’d  think that I would have decided to learn Japanese papermaking based on these acquisitions, and believe me, I was bound and determined (I was even studying Japanese and looking for grants to allow me to travel to Japan).

But while I was doing this research, I discovered Dieu Donné Papermill and began working there as an intern and was soon hired as program director. I haven’t been back to Japan (yet) but I do look forward to returning one day. This video shows some recent artwork being created in the vat at Dieu Donné.

But I’ve digressed. There are many other papermaking books out there! Bernie Toale wrote The Art of Papermaking, and Sophie Dawson’s book The Art & Craft of Papermaking are both great surveys of work being done through the 1980′s, a time when hand papermaking was just getting noticed as an art form (in some ways, it is still just getting noticed).

Dard Hunter wrote the papermaking “bible”, called Papermaking, in which he documented his discoveries about paper from his travels around the world. For some reason there are two copies of this book on my shelf! Cathy Baker wrote an in depth biography of Hunter called By His Own Labor. She actually lived in his home in Chillicothe, OH while she was writing the book – what an amazing experience that must have been – pouring over his papers on the spot. I’ve had the good fortune of visiting that home, Mountain House, where his grandson lives and produces products using his grandfather’s designs today.

I wrote my two papermaking books, Papermaking With Garden Plants & Common Weeds and The Papermaker’s Companion in the late 1990′s with the intention of showing what is possible in paper. This is what has intrigued me about the medium and still does. There is so much potential, so much to discover and so much to explore!

What paper treasures are sitting on bookshelf? Please share with us by leaving a comment below.

This is a weaving of a mystery paper with a sheet from Hiromi Paper’s asarakusui series. Today, I’m stretching the definition of a weaving, but I think you can you tell what I’ve done to connect the sheets. There is no glue on the front side of either sheet.

Today I want to share the work of artist Diane Jacobs with you, because she has done several pieces that incorporate weaving paper. Enjoy these works and then check out the rest of her work on her website.
